Marina del Rey’s harbor produced an unexpected light show Wednesday evening as a luxury yacht loaded with ammunition and fireworks burned for more than two hours before flames were extinguished, authorities said.

Flames leaped 20 to 30 feet from the 100-foot vessel, dubbed the Admiral, while live ammunition rounds could be heard firing from the boat, according to videos from the scene .

Thursday morning, the charred yacht was lying on its side, and the water around it was tinted red from the diesel fuel dumped from the vessel. A Coast Guard spokesperson said an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel was dumped into the water. The total is not official as monitoring continues.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said two passengers aboard the boat exited safely. No information was available about the cause of the blaze.

An L.A. County Fire spokesperson said one individual suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene and was released.

The boat, traveling at a high speed, crashed into the jetty near its slip, killing a man. It would have been much worse, if not for the quick thinking of a passenger.

Firefighters responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and eventually knocked out the flames at 10:33 p.m. The boat was declared fully submerged at 11:33 p.m.

The yacht’s owner, who was not identified, told fire officials that the vessel was carrying 1,000 rounds of ammunition and fireworks.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel confirmed they were on the scene evaluating cleanup options.

Baltic Yachts’ NIKATA wins Superyacht Class at 2019 RORC Caribbean 600

By Rebecca Bradbury   25 February 2019

The 35m/115ft luxury yacht NIKATA sailed to victory in the Superyacht Class at the 2019 RORC Caribbean 600 , the non-stop 600-mile-long race that circumnavigates 11 Caribbean islands.

The largest yacht competing, NIKATA was also among the first to cross the finish line at the annual regatta, taking around 48 hours to complete the race. Built by Baltic Yachts in 2015, she was followed in the Superyacht Class by the 29m/96ft luxury yacht SORCERESS from Southern Wind.

But the big winner of the regatta was the Volvo 70 WIZARD, which was awarded the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy for the best corrected time under IRC. Putting in a near faultless performance, the yacht completed the race in 43 hours 38 minutes and 44 seconds.

Other winners included the MASERATI Multi 70, which won her class while setting a new multihull race record, while the overall MOCRA Class winner was the Gunboat 62 ‘Chim Chim’ and, after some stiff competition, it was the EARENDIL who triumphed in the Class40 Division.

The 11th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 attracted 76 teams from 21 countries and crews from six continents. The highly diverse fleet was challenged by tough conditions, but with the bonus of being able to take in the stunning scenery of the Caribbean islands the route passes.

RORC CEO Eddie Warden Owen said: “All the classes had amazing competition and many finished the race just minutes apart, especially in the battle between Maserati and Argo, and the Class 40s.

“There were a lot of new boats and faces at this edition and the quality of the fleet and sailors continue to impress every year. The weather served up classic trade wind conditions which make the race a challenge, but also a fast and exciting one.”

The 11th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 started in Antigua on 18 February and headed north as far as St Martin and south to Guadeloupe taking in Barbuda , St Kitts and Nevis , Saba and St Barths .

Baltic Nikata 115’

The newly launched Baltic 115’ Nikata, the latest all-carbon custom performance racer/cruiser designed by Nauta Design in collaboration with judel/vroljik & co, has lived up to the promise of her sleek and fast looks completing her first Atlantic crossing at speeds that topped at 28.8 knots.

This dramatically elegant, sleek, silver-hulled 88 ton yacht was built for an owner who is an experienced yachtsman with many high profile regatta wins under his belt. He had a demanding and challenging brief for Nauta Design and Project Manager Nigel Ingram: a beautiful yacht built for speed and elegance in safety and comfort. Nikata has proved to be all that he wished for.

Nikata is the third Nauta Design project built by Baltic Yachts, the renowned Finnish shipyard specialized in hi-tech carbon construction. Nauta Design contributed the general concept, exterior styling and interior design while naval architects judel/vroljik & co designed the hull and waterlines after extensive performance optimizing VPP studies. The Owner’s Project Manager, Nigel Ingram from MCM, also made an important contribution to the Nikata team. The same team recently collaborated successfully on the 116’ blue-water cruiser Doryan, launched in early 2015. Gurit was responsible for the structural engineering.

who owns nikata yacht

The Owner already had a regatta agenda in mind and wanted an innovative and competitive yacht with winning potential. Nikata’s performance hull is in pre-preg carbon sandwich and has aggressive lines optimized for speed after extensive CFD tests. The yacht has a relatively light displacement of 88 tons, a powerful sail plan and remarkable stability thanks to a lifting keel that extends from 3.65 m to 5.85 m.

The low, streamlined deckhouse is Nauta Design’s latest definition of the shape of performance racer/cruisers. The glossy, iron grey metallic hull colour and the softer silver grey of the deckhouse set off the natural teak deck for a stylish, contemporary look that remains sporty and seafaring.

Sportsmen will be happy to find top notch racing hardware and systems on deck such as transversal hydraulically controlled jib sheeting for both fore/aft and inboard/outboard jib trimming.

who owns nikata yacht

Nikata’s interiors offer luxuries usually found only on larger, less sport-orientated yachts. The coachroof is flush-deck but the saloon is light and bright thanks to top and side windows. There is a professional bar area for relaxing after racing and a comfortable chill-out/TV area for recovering. All fittings and furnishings are in lightweight yet durable composite panels veneered in oak and upholstery and wall panels are in light coloured linen for a style that is simple and pared down yet elegant and soothing to the eye.

Cabins include a large and elegant Owner’s cabin and three spacious guest cabins. Crew areas include a functional and spacious galley, a double cabin for the Captain, two other cabins and a comfortable crew mess. The “Owner forward” layout places all crew and operational areas aft so that crew and guest areas are kept separate and the crew can have quick access from interior to deck and vice versa.

When Nikata is not racing, her Owner and his family and friends can enjoy huge sunbed areas and the ingenious fold-out stern platform. This feature was engineered and designed by Nauta and built by Baltic to incorporate a wide set of steps along with a swimming area so that guests can reach the main deck and large cockpit with ease. In the stowed position this teak-laid platform seamlessly becomes part of the aft deck.

Baltic Yachts brought Van Cappellen Consultancy to the project for their masterful soundproofing. After her thrilling Atlantic crossing, Nikata is now in the Caribbean well in advance of her scheduled regatta debut.

"Logic dictates where two contradictory concepts are concerned, you have to choose one or the other, you just can't have both. Nauta Design are different. They see contradictions as a challenge. A yacht has to be an object of extreme beauty, that in years to come, will always give pleasure to the onlooker. Creating a balanced blend of elegance and ease of handling, style and performance, comfort and seaworthiness, is the distinctive character which fuels our pencil, when hand-in-hand with modern technology, we turn ideas into reality." - Nauta Design

Nikata was built for both family cruising and racing. Baltic equipped her with high-speed winches and an advanced barber hauling system for the headsail. To reach smaller anchor bays, the yacht has a lifting keel by APM to reduce the draft from 5.85m to 3.65m.

The Nauta designed fold-out bathing platform with stairs enables easy access to the sea from the large cockpit.

Motor Yacht

Aggressive deck and hull lines, speed, important sail area, relatively light displacement (88 tons!): ready for racing.

Elegant, comfortable while at anchor as well as while sailing, simple, well-trimmed in her style, provided with every comfort: for high-class cruises. These are the two souls of the new 115’ sailing yacht project by Nauta Design and by Judel-Vroljik. Though conflicting at a first sight, they’ve been finally turned into an exquisite marriage.

This 35 mt. L.O.A. sloop, in built at Baltic Yachts in Finland, the worldwide renowned Shipyard specialized in hi-tech constructions, comes out as the fruit of a successful meeting between a highly experienced regattas-winner very demanding client, the Italian designers and German naval architects, whose experiences are well proven by many stunning projects.

Since the first briefing the challenge was extremely interesting for Nauta, binding with some ‘key’ demands concerning performances, elegance, comfort.

A work of fine tuning which engaged Nauta Design for general concept, exterior styling and interior design, and Judel-Vroljik, for the Naval Architecture. The two studios have already fruitfully worked in synergy on a 116’ blue-water cruising yacht currently under construction at Baltic too.

The client’s request to race successfully in several regattas will be accomplished thanks to a very high performance hull, which is the result of a thorough CFD study, in addition the use of pre-preg carbon sandwich, a powerful sailplan and remarkable stability - achieved through the 5.85 mt. draft of the keel (3.65 mt. with the keel completely lifted).

At the same time the yacht offers the most exigent guests some interior elements which are normally the characteristics of yachts in a higher L.O.A. range: the saloon, extremely bright despite the flush-deck roof thanks to the wide top and side windows, a “professional” bar area, an extremely comfortable chill-out/tv area, four spacious guest cabins, with a large and elegant Owner’s cabin, three comfortable cabins for crew including the Captain’s double cabin, the functional and spacious galley.

On the exteriors the pure racers will be happy to find race oriented hardware and systems as in example the transversal hydraulically controlled jib sheeting which allows not only fore and aft but also inboard/outboard jib trimming.

At the same time the Owner family and friends will enjoy the huge sunbed areas and luxury comfort features such as the opening transom, which is designed to be the “grand entrance” for guests as they are welcomed on board, and a relaxing area equipped with fridge and showers.

The interiors features low weight furniture with composite panels covered with thin veneer. The styling is simple, essential and intriguing, with a smooth chromatic balance and a deep feeling of calm transmitted to the guests through the gentle combination of oak wood and light coloured linen panels.

Baltic Yachts have entrusted worldwide known Van Cappellen for a major study in order to minimize noise levels on board, that resulted in a masterfully conceived acoustic insulation. The depth of knowledge and experience of Nigel Ingram from MCM, acting as the Owner’s Project Manager, is a further important contribution to the team.

This is the third Nauta project built by Baltic Yachts, and now the studio is ready to face the future with many stunning designs in their records, full of motivations and new ideas already in progress.

The key features of this yacht are performance, elegance and comfort. Hull lines with a racing pedigree and a powerful sail plan combine with light displacement to make her competitive on the race course, while her elegant styling and comfortable interior will make for relaxed cruising.

Nauta Design is responsible for the exterior styling and interior design with hull lines by judel/vrolijk. Accommodation consists of a saloon, a spectacular bar area, a comfortable chill-out/TV lower saloon, four spacious guest cabins, a large and elegant owner’s cabin, three crew cabins and a spacious galley.

A key feature on deck is the wide, opening transom, which with its impressive ‘staircase’ leading to the deck is designed as the ‘grand entrance’ for guests as they are welcomed aboard. The opening transom doubles as a swimming platform equipped with showers and a fridge.

The yacht benefits from carbon foam sandwich construction and is equipped with a lifting keel. Nigel Ingram from MCM managed the project and delivery took place in Autumn 2015.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

who owns nikata yacht

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

The yachts owned by celebrities

How can someone who is recognised everywhere get away from it all? On a superyacht, of course. Yachts owned by celebrities range in style and size, but one thing that unite these vessels is their owner's love for the sea. Our round-up features the famous faces of British footballer David Beckham, tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, martial artist Conor McGregor and fashion designer Giorgio Armani.

Unknown owned by Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimović took delivery of the second hull in Benetti 's 34M Oasis, named Unknown , in 2022.  The 34 metre superyacht has had a busy maiden season, cruising around the emerald coasts of Sardinia showing off her trademarked Oasis deck and RWD -designed exterior. Ibrahimović has posted the yacht on social media extensively, with videos of him and his friends playing with a drone and putting her huge locker of water toys - which includes a floating dock - to good use. The Oasis 34M follows in the footsteps of the highly popular Oasis 40M, the first hull of which, Rebeca , is owned by champion powerboat racer Tim Ciasulli.

More about this yacht

Seven owned by david beckham.

Ex-England football star and Inter Miami owner David Beckham has been revealed as the owner of a 28 metre Riva Argo 90 . Named after Beckham's iconic football shirt number, Seven was launched in October 2021 and constructed in GRP. Studio Officina Italiana Design penned the yacht both inside and out, while Ferretti Engineering Department oversaw her naval architecture. Stand out design features include the sun lounging space on the foredeck, while twin MTU diesel engines power her to a top speed of 30 knots.

Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 owned by Conor McGregor

UFC fighter Conor McGregor has been revealed as the owner of a recently completed Tecnomar For Lamborghini 63 yacht . The 19.2 metre yacht is a crossover of the two brands and designed to satisfy owners who enjoy superyachts and supercars. McGregor’s yacht features a distinctive gold hull paint and will feature the same materials as a Lamborghini supercar. Inspired by Lamborghini’s Siàn FKP 37 model, Tecnomar For Lamborghini features an aerodynamic profile and special “carbon skin”.

Viva a Vida owned by Tom Brady

NFL superstar Tom Brady took delivery of a 16 metre custom cruiser from Dutch builder Wajer towards the end of 2020 after signing a $50 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The quarterback is clearly a keen fan of the Wajer yachts after he recently announced he had commissioned a larger mode, the Wajer 77. The Wajer 55S, christened Viva a Vida , sports a baby blue hull and is powered by three 435hp Volvo Penta engines guaranteeing a wild ride with speeds in excess of 40 knots. A walkaround centre console allows guests to make the most of the deck space available with stowage for SeaBobs and other toys concealed beneath the aft stairway. Below deck, the Wajer 55S offers accommodation for four. Other cool features include push-button fenders and an extendable swim platform. The 55S is the souped-up version of its older sibling, the Wajer 55 , and comes from the boards of Dutch design studio Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design .

Great White owned by Rafael Nadal

Tennis ace  Rafael Nadal  is the proud new owner of a Sunreef 80 Power superyacht , which was delivered in June 2020. Nadal commissioned the catamaran after previously chartering a number of Sunreef catamarans and meeting yard founder and president Francis Lapp at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival. This is not his first foray into yachting however. Nadal previously owned a  Monte Carlo Yachts  76 named  Beethoven  which he bought in 2016. Nadal has spoken openly about his love of yachting and his decision to invest in a yacht, telling  Boat International , "Because I have a yacht, I am able to forget about everything and get away from that tiring stress. I do have a real passion for [superyachts]. It is rare that I see a superyacht from a distance and I don’t know its name. I know them all!"

Main owned by Giorgio Armani

Fashion designer Giorgio Armani has recently celebrated 40 years of life at sea  and of course the fashion icon has a suitably stylish yacht. Enter the 65 metre Codecasa yacht Main , owned by Giorgio Armani, which has been designed inside and out with input from Armani. The exterior of the yacht is in an unusual dark green colour, which suits the angular, military-inspired exterior lines. Inside, the yacht has a muted palette and features wow factors in a spiral staircase, gym, cinema and guest accommodation for 12.

Vendetta owned by Billy Joel

The modern classic commuter yacht Vendetta is just one of the many yachts that Billy Joel has owned. The "Piano Man" is a yacht fanatic, to the extent that he's even a celebrity yacht designer . Designed by Doug Zurn, the 17 metre Vendetta was created to be a true replica of the classic gentleman's commuter launches that were popularised in the 1920s for their quick speed to run down the Long Island Sound and into New York City. True to the intended form of the vessels, Billy Joel told BOAT International  that he has used the yacht to run from his home in Long Island to the City to perform in a concert. At one point, Billy Joel owned five yachts, including 29 metre Inace explorer yacht Audacious (re-named Miss Sarah J ) ,  which he converted to house a few of his motorcycles. Fresh from a refit, Vendetta has recently joined the brokerage market and is listed for sale with Fraser .

Infinity owned by NBA star Tony Parker

In December 2018, Turkish yard AvA Yachts announced that it had sold the second hull in its 35 metre Kando 110 series to NBA star Tony Parker and the yacht was delivered two years later. Named Infinity , the steel and aluminium full displacement yacht will feature a bulbous bow and has been designed in-house. The 340GT yacht will accommodate 12 guests in six cabins with crew quarters for six including a separate captain’s double cabin. The four-decked yacht will feature a “light, contemporary interior décor” chosen by the basketball star and his wife, who are said to have put the yard through a rigorous selection process before choosing AvA for their new build.

Freedom owned by Roberto Cavalli

Much secrecy surrounded the construction of fashion designer Roberto Cavalli’s yacht until it was delivered in 2018. Built by Italian shipyard Cerri Cantieri Navali , the 27-metre Freedom was designed by Tommaso Spadolini in collaboration with her owner. According to Cavalli, the inspiration for the yacht’s design was the aesthetic of batman’s superhero batmobile. This explains the severe lines, jet black exterior and tinted windows which make up the yacht’s distinctive appearance. on board, Cavalli’s signature animal-print furnishings adorn the cabins and saloons. Freedom can accommodate six guests and three crew members and has two dining areas on board. Powered by three water jet engines, Freedom’s moderate size means that she can reach a top speed of 40 knots.

Eos owned by Diane von Furstenburg

Launched by  Lürssen in 2006, 93 metre sailing yacht Eos was bought by fashion designer Diane von Furstenburg and her husband IAC Chairman Barry Diller in 2009. The schooner features exterior design by Bill Langan and interior design by Francois Catroux with accommodation for 16 guests and 21 crew. Diller and von Furstenburg often use the yacht to host a star-studded group of friends with Bravo host Andy Cohen the latest celebrity spotted on this superyacht .

Defined as a yacht over 78ft (24m), superyachts are run by a professional crew and are often built to eye-watering specifications (and budgets!)

For many years, the word superyacht was synonymous with fuel-guzzling motor boats. It is refreshing, then, to see that many superyacht designers in recent years returning to sail, alongside experimenting with form and function.

From 100ft wooden yachts fitted with fully electric systems – taking advantage of advances in clean energy – to luxury day cruisers and high performance minded designs, the world of the superyacht sailing boats continues to be an innovative space.

Even fuel powered superyachts are seeing a boom in creative design and are breaking boundaries in terms of what can be done to make huge luxury cruisers environmentally friendly while providing the ease of use and aesthetics to be expected in a £multi-million yacht.
