What Is a Trimaran?

A trimaran, is a multihull sail boat that featur es  two smaller outrigger hulls connected by lateral beams  to a  wider, central  main hull.  The trimaran ’ s unique three hull design offers  sailing enthusiasts the best  of both worlds  -   the sailing capabilities of a monohull  and  the speed of a catamaran. Also referred to as a  ‘ double outrigger ’ , the design of this vessel makes them incredibly stable, buoyant , and fast .

Initially  developed by Austronesian people over four thousand years ago, t rimarans were o riginally used  for fishing in Southeast Asia ; and , are still consider ed the traditional fishing boat in this part of the world .  Trimarans have also been used in times of war and as ferries to transport people, goods ,  and automobiles.

Yet, it wasn’t until a Ukrainian immigrant , by the name of Victor Tchetchet , developed a more  modern ized sailing trimaran in 1945  -which  piqued the interest of other boat builders  who   have since enhanced his  design.  Fast forward to the 1 960’s and  19 70’s  when the  trimaran made a name for itself in the boating world- quickly  gain ing popularity as both  a n exceptional recreational   and racing   sailboat.

Trimaran Charters

Today’s modern trimarans are revered in the boating world for their remarkable speed and seaworthiness. The design and construction of trimaran yacht charter makes this sailboat exceptionally stable, so they are difficult to capsize even in the roughest waters. The ir interior and exterior also offers comfortable sailing; and depending on the size, enough room to accommodate a large crew or group of passengers .

12 Knots offers a terrific selection of exciting trimaran charters available in destinations throughout the Mediterranean, Atlantic ,  and Caribbean. W hether you want to rent a bareboat and sail off on your own or hire a crewed sailboat to ensure a relaxing, stress - free vacation with family or friends , 12 K nots can  assist you in finding  the perfect trimaran  for your trip . At 12 Knots ,  you’ll also  be able to choose from  an impressive collection of the most  popular models such as :  Corsaire  Marine, Motive, Exploder, Neels, Dragonfly, Farrier Marine ,  and  more!

Trimarans, Catamarans, and Monohulls- What’s the difference?

As with any boat  rental you choose for your vacation , it’s important to know the differences in the sailboats a vailable for charter.   While some people will prefer a leisurely vacation  where  they  can  cruise along the coast , there are other s  who  will prefer a more exhilarating  high - sea s adventure flying across the open water .  Learning more about  the different  characteristics and features of these sailing vessels  can certainly help you select the best charter for your needs, purpose , and the type of sailing trip you want to experience .

Monohull

Design, Performance, Stability , and Safety

A m onohull is  a traditional sailboat featuring only one hull and sails. They can be powered by sails or an engine .

All m onohulls are designed with a ballast  keel which is necessary to ensure its balance and stability on the water .

A m onohull ’ s keel will increase displacement (weight of the water moved as the boat sails)  and produce a greater wetted surface area- which will increase the  drag ( resistance  on the water) ; creating a lower , sometimes more favorable , cruising  speed .

The heel (tipping to one side or the other) can be greater than that of a multihull sailboat (up to 20 degrees at speed) which for many passengers ,   can be either exciting or a nuisance .

Space and Comfort

Depending on the size , a monohull can be quite comfortable and spacious.

Although unlike its multihull counterparts , the cabins, bathrooms , and gallery are located in the boat’s one hull (below deck) .

The ‘triangle’ shape of a mon o hull’s bow makes it less space-efficient than a multihull.

Docking and A nchoring

Docking at a marina  is  both effortless and less expensive because of its  maneuverability and width .

Unlike multihulls, t he keel on a monohull doesn’t allow it to anchor close to shore  or sail in shallow waters.

Multihull

Design, Performance, Stability and Safety

Catamarans have two  hulls and trimarans have three. They can be powered by sails or an engine (s) .

Designed without a keel, a  multihull ’ s weight is distributed between the hulls  which creates balance and stability on the water .

A m ultihull’s lack of a keel will produce a minimal wetted surface area, which in turn will cause less drag on the water - creating more lift and speed .

Although multihull sailboats certainly have a reputation for speed,  Trimarans surpass both monohulls and cata marans  in regard to speed; with effortless acceleration, sport trimarans can reach speed s  over 45 knots (more than 50 mph), while standard cruising trimaran can do over 15 to 20 knots .

In terms of stability, a trimaran surpasses that of a catamaran or a monohull. A trimaran’s design of one main hull and two over - hanging hulls makes this vessel safe and more stable -faring much  better i n unpredictable weather /rougher waters and less likely to capsize than its  counterparts.

With a limited heel of only 5-10 degrees at speed , multihulls offer a much smoother and predictable sailing cruise on the water -safer for small children and elderly passengers

A trimaran’s living space is limited because it’s centered on the middle hull. Catamarans  offer a  more spacious  living area ; both offer comfortable cabins located in the hulls .

Docking  and A nchoring

Multihulls are much wider than monohulls, so docking options might be limited and  fees will be slightly higher .

Unlike a monohull, multihulls can anchor in almost any bay. The absence of a keel results in having a lower/shallow draft which enables a cat or trimaran to venture much  closer to shore .

Cost of a Trimaran Rental

On the average , you can ren t a trimaran for as little as $2 , 100  US dollars  per week cruising Marseille - with luxury charters costing up to $14,000 per week  sailing around  Martinique .

With special offers and booking discounts offered at 12 Knots, renting a trimaran is one of the most fun and exciting ways to travel the globe. Whether you decide on a bareboat rental or a hire a crew   for your next vacation  or race , the cost of your charter will always depend on the following factors:

Trimaran  size, age, and model

Type of charter -crewed/bareboat

Destination

Duration of trip

Season/time of year

Amenities

For the best price and value for your money, you’ll want to contact 12 Knots to take advantage of their booking discounts and charter special offers

Best Destinations for a Trimaran Charter

Although   Trimaran  charters  are  available  throughout  regions around the world, The  Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean   are some of the  most popular  destinations  with home bases in the British Virgin  Islands  (BVI),  Martinique , Guadeloupe, Corsica, South of France , Northern France, and   Croatia .

Charter Trimaran Requirements

Bareboat trimaran charters in many countries will require a sailing  license to operate the vessel. However, depending on the destination, a license might not always be  necessary- but documentation stating your experience and sailing history will be requested . Of course, that shouldn’t stop you from chartering a trimaran, as you can always choose to book a skipper for your sailing vacation .

Trimaran – The Ultimate Guide

trimaran yacht charter

Trimarans have been around for a while, yet racing aside they are not as popular as some other types of boats, especially in the multihull segment largely dominated by catamarans.

It is a shame as sailing a trimaran can be a very thrilling experience, even for the most relaxing yacht trips. Three words define it perfectly: Stability, Speed, and Lightness.

What is a trimaran?

A trimaran is a type of multihull boat composed of three individual hulls.

The center hull is the largest part of the boat, and the other two are floats designed to keep the boat stable by connecting to the center hull through an arm.

A brief history of trimarans

The name trimaran comes from the root word tri, meaning three, and maram, meaning wood or tree.

It is reported that the first trimarans were built by cultures in Asia and the Philippines. It is still the traditional fishing boat today in these parts of the world.

In the 16th century, the first trimaran (and catamaran) prototypes were “Proa” – tiny boats with two parallel hulls. The islanders used these boats in the Pacific Ocean.

Then, the amateur development of the modern sailing trimaran began in 1945 with the efforts of Victor Chetchet, a Ukrainian immigrant to the United States, who built two trimarans out of marine plywood that was later credited with coining the term “trimaran.”

Recreational trimarans grew in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s.

Until the ’90s, the trimaran was mostly chosen by sailors looking for performance.Modern trimarans, however, differ from the popular multihulls of that period in terms of design, speed, and “stuffing.”

In the last 30 years, many Trimarans ranging in length from 19 to 36 feet have been designed and built. Most of these trimarans could be folded and transported in trailers.

Trimarans quickly became a popular mode of transportation. Benchijigua Express, a 127-meter trimaran, was delivered to Spain in 2005. There were 1280 people and 340 automobiles on board! It was the world’s longest aluminum ship at the time, with a peak speed of 40 knots!

Likewise, things have changed in recent years. The cruising multihull market has developed enormously, with trimarans reaching very appreciable cruising levels, such as the new Tricat 30 or, for larger budgets, the Neel 45.

Why choose a trimaran?

trimaran yacht charter

Trimarans are faster than monohulls or cruising catamarans of the same size. They are also undoubtedly even more stable and secure than a catamaran.

They are masters of competition and records for a reason. For example, Thomas Coville held the world record of 49 days and 3 hours of the solo round the world race on the trimaran Sodebo Ultim.

Main trimaran characteristics

Thanks to its central hull and two smaller outrigger hulls, its three hulls give the trimaran very high stability. During the navigation, the trimaran goes upwind better than a catamaran, which is more prone to drifting phenomena. Therefore, Trimarans are faster.

The renowned NEEL 65, for example, is an atypical and innovative trimaran. Its capacity has been increased to provide roomy staterooms, and its center hull, which is precisely aligned with the mooring line, ensures stability and comfort when at anchor.

A trimaran is very stable

The wind propels a sailboat ahead and causes it to tilt in one direction. The keel under the hull prevents the boat from drifting and the ballast from capsizing in monohulls. As a result, a monohull will list in heavy winds.

Multihulls, on the other hand, benefit from their floats, which can withstand submersion. The catamaran will cruise quietly and will not heel like a monohull, but it will be unpleasant in rough waves.

In contrast, the trimaran’s three hulls provide excellent stability, similar to the little wheels added to a bicycle. The shape of the floats makes recreational trimarans especially stable and enjoyable to sail even in severe waves.

Sailing a trimaran is a thrilling experience

The trimarans offer a real sailing experience in the heart of the ocean racing world. They also allow you to meet with passionate people that will share their technical knowledge, experiences, and adventures with you.

If you choose a cruising trimaran for a luxurious vacation, your experience will be just as enriching. You will enjoy large living spaces, incomparable stability, relaxing safety, and quality crew service along with true sailing sensations.

The wind and the performance of a trimaran are second to none

When the wind pulls a boat upwind or the side, it is essential to offset the wind’s drive, and the hull and daggerboard provide this compensatory thrust.

As compared to a catamaran, a trimaran is more capable of sailing upwind. Thus, trimarans are quicker than catamarans, and this advantage is especially noticeable while sailing against the wind due to the weight centering in the middle hull, which reduces pitching.

Safety: the trimaran is the safest of all multihulls

Among all the multihulls, the trimaran is the safest because of its three-hull design, comprehensive anti-drift scheme, and weight centering.

There are for instance considerable variances in righting torques between a trimaran and a catamaran. Trimarans have a maximum righting moment of 27° of the heel while catamarans have a maximum righting moment of only 12°. This can be attained in strong winds, even in extremely small seas. The margin is therefore much higher on a trimaran.

Furthermore, even if the trimaran were to capsize, the construction would keep it from sinking, making it an extremely safe watercraft.

That being said, all multihulls, including catamarans are generally safe and easy to maneuver as long as you do it correctly.

Racing: a trimaran is a very popular choice

When it comes to racing, trimarans are more popular than catamarans, especially over the last 10 years.

Racing trimarans provide significant speed and safety benefits in extended offshore races. Even in severe seas, they can be pushed harder and are more forgiving than other racing catamarans. These are the primary reasons why trimarans have become so popular in recent multihull competitions.

Who can benefit the most from using a trimaran?

trimaran yacht charter

There are many different types of experiences possible with a trimaran, so many people will find a trimaran to their liking.

The racing enthusiast ready to take on the world, the sailor with a thirst for adventure, or the cruising family, will find the trimaran right for their project.

The main trimarans drawbacks

The biggest drawback to trimarans is their living space. Indeed, most of the models on the market have a living space centered only at the level of the central hull, and the other spaces are rather limited. This is especially true for racing trimarans.

The only manufacturer who offers a solution to this problem is NEEL, with trimarans having large and comfortable living spaces.

Trimaran yacht charter: a unique and thrilling experience

If trimarans aren’t the most popular yachts on the charter market (yet!), it doesn’t mean you should refrain from renting one if you want to discover the sailing experience of a boat with three hulls;

Why should you charter a trimaran?

trimaran yacht charter

WI Yachts offers you 5 good reasons to charter a trimaran:

  • New concept: Trimaran is the boat of the future, combining the best of the monohull and catamaran world.
  • Unequaled volume: Trimaran’s layout is unique and original, and the cockpit is extra large.
  • Serene navigation: a trimaran is known for its ease of handling, even with a reduced crew, unequaled stability, and guaranteed comfort.
  • Complete autonomy: Trimarans are often equipped with watermakers and solar panels, they are self-sufficient in energy and freshwater.
  • Environmentally friendly navigation: The sailboat is well known to be the least polluting means of travel; you can enjoy an environmentally friendly vacation.

The best destinations to charter a trimaran

Martinique history

BVI: Between the nearby highly cosmopolitan US Virgin Islands and the pristine British Virgin Islands , there are more than 60 islands. They feature several sheltered anchorages and are ideal sailing grounds for first-time charterers or families. Coral reefs and gorgeous beaches may be found all around the archipelago, offering a variety of water activities.

Martinique: When it comes to variety, Martinique excels. Travel north to enjoy the magnificence of the mountainous landscape. Or sail south to relax on the island’s best white sand beaches. Protected by a coral reef, this is a magical sailing ground for your charter yacht vacation.

Known as the island of flowers, Martinique is a French overseas territory. It is also one of the largest islands in the Lesser Antilles.

Saint Martin: Sint Maarten is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while Saint Martin, the northern half of the island, is a French overseas collectivity. A popular stop for Caribbean cruise ships, the island is known for its lagoons, beaches, and colonial-style architecture.

Guadeloupe: Guadeloupe is a small butterfly-shaped island divided into two main islands: Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. Separated by a narrow channel and connected by a bridge, the two islands are very distinct. This French overseas department lies in the middle of the Eastern Caribbean, between Dominica and Antigua. Charter a yacht in this part of the Lesser Antilles and discover a unique blend of European and tropical cultures.

Seychelles: Seychelles are all varied, and each offers a personal vision of Paradise. You can explore them all during your cruise thanks to the short sailing distances. The Seychelles yacht charter area extends to the islands of Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, and twenty smaller islands. Beautiful lagoons, white sandy beaches, and a wealth of marine life make Seychelles a unique cruising destination.

How much does it cost to charter a trimaran?

It is possible to charter a trimaran no matter what your budget is; a bareboat trimaran NEEL 45 can be chartered from €3 400 per week.

Buying a trimaran

trimaran yacht charter

Buying a boat, regardless of the type, depends on the intended navigation. For a cruising-oriented program, we often think of the monohull or the catamaran. The trimaran market seems more naive, yet cruising aboard a trimaran can be an excellent alternative.

However, trimarans are now able to provide all the necessary comfort for each cruising project.

On the other hand, when it comes to determining trimaran costs, most people make a mistake in their value evaluation. Rather than comparing lengths, the underlying value is found in the cost per knot.

Besides, a trimaran will outperform a monohull boat of the same length.

How much does it cost to buy a trimaran?

You can buy a trimaran for about $959,959. With 75 HP engine, fiberglass hull material, this trimaran will have 8.9 meters of the beam and 1.8 meters of draft. It houses 4 guest cabins and 2 crew cabins.

The best trimarans shipyards

trimaran yacht charter

Among the best trimaran builders we can find:

Neel: The trimarans of the shipyard are unique thanks to the experience and unequaled know-how. They combine unequaled living comfort with incredible sailing pleasure.

Rapido trimarans: Its creator has always been convinced that there was a missing segment in the sailing market: a cruising trimaran at sea, piloted by its owner, powerful enough to accelerate and avoid any potential problem, and able to be sailed safely by two people. This is how their concept was born: to build the fastest production cruising trimaran in the world.

Dragonfly: The shipyard offers 4 models, from 25 to 40 feet, with different touring, sport, performance, evolution, or ultimate, which allows everyone to find a trimaran to suit his needs.

Corsair marine: Created by a New Zealand architect in California, Corsair has built more than 1,200 folding trimarans between 1984 and 2008, making them the leader in this segment.

The best trimarans currently on the market

There are two types of trimarans that currently stand out on the market — those for coastal raids and those for cruising.

NEEL 43 , 45, 51 , 65 for liveaboard

LEEN 56, motor trimaran for liveaboard

The Tricat 25 for summer cruising or day trips

The Dragonfly 40, for simple offshore cruising

In the past 7 years he has worked with Promenade, learning all aspects of the yacht. Felix brings a touch of the Caribbean to Promenade, he is a keen fisherman, SCUBA diver and the guests love his dancing style. Felix is the only man that I know of who can catch fish with his hands. His favourite phase has got to be "no problems mon!" Felix also very cautious with guest safety being a high concern to him. Felix is a firm favourite with all our charter guests. Felix will be providing shore support this coming season, and will be out on the charters as needed or requested too.

Jo Street is our stewardess. Jo hails from the United Kingdom, although recently she has been living in such diverse countries as Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Nigeria! Formally an educator for the younger grades, she took up a love of SCUBA diving and became an advanced open water diver, and started following a passion for sailing, obtaining her competent crew license. Jo is patient, dligent and has a keen eye to detail. You will find her helping out all over the yacht and keeping a close eye on making sure charter guests have all the little touches that make their trip.

However, if it is not possible to respond favourably to a trimaran charter request, Trimaran Yachts Charter will propose alternatives to satisfy the customer. The website also presents the different purchase programmes in management and rental.

Exceptional yachts These trimarans are the result of the experience and know-how of a team of enthusiasts, as well as feedback from the sailors, both during coastal cruises and over long-distance journeys. The greatest naval architects, Michel Joubert, Bernard Nivelt and Marc Lombard signed the plans for these units. The width of the trimarans and the centring of the weights in the main hull are important for safety at sea because they guarantee great stability. This also contributes to a much more comfortable and smoother sailing experience.

The Neel trimarans, renowned for their quality and originality, can be manoeuvred in complete safety and with a reduced crew. These boats are all particularly light, functional, accommodating and well-equipped (with large refrigerated compartments among other things). Life on board is a joy day after day. The layout of the living areas on one level, half exterior, half interior, with the famous Cockloon concept (contraction of cockpit and saloon) is unique. Life on board has a loft feel with a central galley, a saloon with a panoramic view and a cabin on the same level. Each model has its own specific design features that will meet everyone’s desires and tastes. An original configuration for each model

NEEL 43 The latest addition to the range continues to innovate and amaze with a pronounced shift towards the use of bio-sourced and recyclable materials. NEEL-TRIMARANS is definitely part of the virtuous circle of respect for the environment. The modular layout of the NEEL 43 surprises, in addition to the two double cabins, single cabins in the fore decks, a tatami mat layout in the saloon can accommodate up to 10 people on board.

NEEL 47 The NEEL 47’s configurations are seductive with the layout of the floats with independent access, or the “Full Beam Cockpit” which stretches a cockpit of unequalled dimensions, never before seen on a 47-footer.

NEEL 51 It is distinguished by its famous Cockoon, which is derived from the successful marriage between “cockpit” and “saloon” (saloon in English). A breathtaking indoor/outdoor living space. The NEEL 51 wins all the professional and general public prizes and definitively positions the trimaran as the ideal yacht for pleasure cruising.

Trimaran vs. Catamaran: What are the Differences?

trimaran yacht charter

Experience the thrill of sailing on a multihull – a boat with two or three hulls. Discover the unique features of the trimaran and the catamaran , and how they differ in performance and comfort. Want speed and excitement? Take the helm of a trimaran. Prefer a leisurely cruise? Relax on a catamaran. Don’t miss out on this exciting article uncovering the secrets of multihull sailing.

How to recognize a trimaran from a catamaran?

First up, the catamaran. Simple, sleek, and stylish, this craft boasts not one, but two identical hulls – making it a twin amongst ships. Its minimalist design is a thing of beauty, and it might just be the perfect float for solo explorers or couples seeking a romantic ocean adventure.

On the other hand, the trimaran is a multihull masterclass in innovation. With a total of three hulls, including two small outriggers, this vessel’s design is unlike anything you’ve seen before. In fact, some have compared it to a spaceship, and we can see why! The trimaran’s unique layout and engineering wizardry make it a worthy addition to any seafarer’s fleet.

So, whether you’re a catamaran connoisseur or a trimaran trailblazer, there’s no denying that these vessels are truly remarkable. Just don’t ask us to choose a favourite!

What are the trimaran main characteristics?

trimaran yacht charter

A trimaran’s three hulls are like the training wheels on a bicycle, making it incredibly stable even in choppy waters. These recreational boats are a sailor’s dream, offering a smooth ride and exceptional comfort. And when it comes to safety, trimarans are virtually unsinkable due to their triple-hull design – even the roughest storms won’t capsize them! Although compromising some sailing capacity, the security and stability of a trimaran are unmatched.

What are the catamaran main characteristics?

Discover the one-of-a-kind world of catamarans – versatile vessels affectionately nicknamed “cats”. Offering an exciting and luxurious sailing experience, these boats come in a range of sizes, from cozy two-person cabins to expansive group accommodation for up to 20. Some catamarans are budget-friendly options perfect for families, while others provide the ultimate indulgence and can transport you to some of the most coveted destinations in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. With their roomy interiors and stable design, catamarans are perfect for exploring calm sea gulfs, lagoons or shallow waters.

Trimaran vs. Catamaran: which one has the largest surface area?

trimaran yacht charter

Catarmarans surface area is known to be spacious

Catamarans have filled the world’s oceans in recent years with more huge and luxury versions, including sailing catamarans like the Lagoon Seventy 7, Fountaine Pajot’s Allegria 67, and motor catamarans like the Sunreef Power 70. The biggest catamaran known is Hemisphere, and you may want to have a look at Douce France available for charter with WI.

Catamarans are well-known for their large living quarters, which are divided between the two hulls and the central platform.

Trimarans surface area are constantly improving

Among some of the cruising, habitable trimarans, the DragonFly boasts a unique Swing Wing system and a plush interior, while the Vietnamese-made Rapido Trimaran is the brainchild of the esteemed Morrelli & Melvin design house. But what really sets the Naval NEEL shipyard trimarans apart is the incredible “Cockloon” living area above the central hull – it’s like staying in a floating hotel! With cabins located solely on the floats, the central kitchen, panoramic saloon, and lounging areas are all linked together for an unbeatable sense of space and luxury. And don’t forget the expansive flybridge, too!

Trimaran vs. Catamaran: Stability and Performance

Yachts for Sale

The Trimaran stability made it famous

With three hulls, including one main and two overhanging, a trimaran is built for stability even in the roughest waters. In fact, it’s nearly impossible for a trimaran to capsize, making it a safer option for the adventurous seafarer. And if by some chance or circumstance the boat does flip, fear not – it’ll stay afloat! The only downside? The trimaran provides both the comfort of a monohull and the safety of a multihull, but hey, no boat is perfect. Did we mention it’s also one of the fastest boats out there? Sounds like a win-win to us.

The Catamaran performances aren’t as versatile as trimaran

Catamarans are incredible vessels that offer not only a smooth sailing experience, but also a comfortable ride. Ranging in size from cozy cabins for two to massive ships that can fit 20, catamarans are top-notch for stability. However, they aren’t particularly cut out for rough seas, preferring calm waters like tranquil gulfs and shallow lagoons. Keep in mind that while they may not excel in upwind sailing and lack the heeling abilities of other boats, catamarans will still take you on a sailing adventure like no other.

Trimaran vs. Catamaran: Distinct Sailing Experiences

trimaran yacht charter

Sailboats rely on wind speed to move forward, but stability is crucial to avoid capsizing. Monohulls have a keel underneath to prevent this, making them more durable in heavy winds. Meanwhile, multihulls such as catamarans offer greater stability with their floats, resulting in a smoother ride even in rough seas. However, trimarans are more similar to monohulls and may tip more, offering advantages in rougher waters but less comfort on calm days. Overall, multihulls have an edge in stability compared to their monohull counterparts.

Trimaran vs. Catamaran: Safety

Trimarans are very safe boats.

You might be surprised to find out that Trimarans are extremely safe; in fact, many trimarans, are almost unsinkable. They have a core made up of foam, and the materials’ buoyancy is extremely high in comparison to the boat’s displacement. Trimarans are safe because of their breadth. The trimaran is the safest of the multihulls because of its three-hulled design, weight centering, and complete anti-drift scheme.

Moreover, even if the trimaran were to overturn, the structure would keep it from plummeting into the water, making it an extremely safe boat.

Catamarans safety is still very good

Catamarans are a safe way to travel the ocean. Offshore, catamarans are often far safer than monohulls of similar size. Enhanced resilience, speed, steadiness, and motion ease due to a lack of ballast all contribute to safety.

A large modern catamaran has an outstanding resilience and roll inertia. The mix of these factors makes invasion or capsizing extremely unlikely. When a 20-foot wave hits a catarmaran’s beam, the boat will just surf sideways.

Trimaran vs. Catamaran: Racing

trimaran yacht charter

Catamarans are very fast downwind

Catamarans are recognized for their velocity, and some of them are capable of breaking world sailing records. Catamarans may travel at a pace  of 15 to 30 mph, with the best reaching speeds of well over 60 knots.

Cruising catamarans may reach high speeds of 15 knots, or 17.3 mph, on average (27.84 kph). In the right wind conditions; however, some outstanding racing catamarans can reach a pace of up to 30 knots.

On downwind runs, reaches, and broad reaches, catamarans are typically quicker than trimarans. Sailing a catamaran is less exhausting than sailing a trimaran. Sailing flat has a number of benefits. Carrying tanks and other diving equipment is significantly simpler on a cat if you are a SCUBA diver.

Catamarans are lighter than trimarans because they do not require a heavy keel. This, along with the fact that their sails are placed equivalent to the wind, allows them to sail quicker than trimarans, particularly on a run or broad reach.

Trimarans are the usual racing winner

Trimarans are frequently preferred in racing these days, especially in the previous decade or so.

For long offshore races, racing trimarans’ speed and safety qualities have significant benefits. Even in severe seas, they can be pushed harder and are more forgiving than other racing catamarans. These are the primary reasons why trimarans have become so popular in recent multihull competitions. Trimarans, for example, have won the Jules Verne Trophy every year since 2010.

Trimarans can often increase their monohull sailing speed on almost every point of sail while cruising catamarans are usually 25-30 percent faster than a sailing monohull of the same length. Of course, when the boats are filled for cruising, these comparisons vary drastically.

A trimaran is more suited to sail upwind than a catamaran, which is more vulnerable to drifting. Trimarans are; therefore, quicker than catamarans, and this benefit is especially noticeable when cruising against the wind due to the weight centering in the middle hull, which lowers pitching.

The third hull really makes trimarans considerably quicker than any other hull form at a given extent based on the relation between a boat’s waterline length and speed i.e. that more hull distance in the water leads to higher speeds.

Which is Better: A Trimaran or a Catamaran?

trimaran yacht charter

If you want to spend less time on deck, a catamaran is a great option. Catamarans are also ideal for hosting gatherings and parties while maintaining their stability on the water.

A trimaran is a more ideal boat for you if you want to develop your sailing talents on something more difficult. Moreover, if you’re a speed demon, keep an eye out for the fastest trimaran boats and pick the one that best meets your needs.

While picking between a catamaran and a trimaran appears simple on paper, it becomes more challenging when you see them in front of you. Check out our page for more details in order to make a more informed decision.

That the trimaran in ideal conditions up to  22 knots can do, is stated in the brochure and the recipe is quickly revealed:

Lightweight, hydrodynamically shaped hulls, low payload, a power rig with carbon fiber mast and membrane sails with plenty of surface area.

It's easiest to reach double-digit speeds under a gennaker in medium winds and flat water. Or upwind with a reef ;-)
