Yacht charter Bodden coast
In the east of Germany the islands of Rügen and Usedom combine with the surrounding Bodden waters and the Szczecin Lagoon to form one of the most beautiful yacht charter sailing areas in the Baltic Sea. The nature of the Bodden coast is unique: due to the low salt content of the shallow waters a flora and fauna settled here, which is neither found in the open sea nor in inland lakes. In Germany, the Bodden coast is divided into the following regions. The Darß-Zingster Bodden chain , the Nordrügener and the Westrügener Bod den and the Greifswalder Bod den. And also the Peenestrom with Achterwasser and Stettiner Haff belongs to the Bodden waters.
Even though the Bodden waters are not directly connected to the open sea, difficult conditions can develop when strong winds arise. The Bodden waters are not the open sea, but they are not inland waters either. Especially in the Greifswalder Bodden, a wave can build up at wind forces above 4 Bft, which is unpleasant for smaller boats. The same applies as for sailing: steady attention and a certain amount of caution.

Unique natural landscapes in the Darß-Zingster Bodden
In the Darß-Zingster Bod den region you can sail from Barth . Sailing here means calmness and mindfulness, and the whole thing often under motor, when the winds decide to rest. With a depth of 2.50 m, the fairway offers sufficient clearance under the keel, but it is relatively narrow buoyed and you sail closely along the protected areas. One dives into another world. The light in the Bodden is often described as quite extraordinary, as if it puts a filter on everything.
In spring and autumn the wildlife of the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, which includes the Darß-Zingster Bodden, is at its busiest. In September and October the cranes migrate and make a stopover here. They occasionally mingle with the deer, which also find a sheltered spot here during their rutting season. Immerse yourself in this unique natural landscape. You will also encounter the traditional Zeesboote, adapted to the shallow Bodden. In the west of Rügen lies the car-free island of Hiddensee. Here ends the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft and begins the section of the Westrügener Bodden.
It is said that time passes differently on the ground - more slowly - and the light is all its own, giving everything a very special magic © Rico Ködder/AdobeStock
Old Hanseatic towns framed by picturesque coastal landscapes
The Westrügen Bodden is framed by the coastline of Rügen and the North German coast. Discover the cultural heritage of the old Hanseatic cities, like in Stralsund , or the beauty of the local beach resorts like in Altefähr . The old Hanseatic cities and their cultural heritage make beautiful yacht charter destinations: In addition to Stralsund, Greifswald and Wolgast , Anklam , Demmin and Szczecin were also part of the medieval city league. The old towns of Stralsund and Wismar , which are well worth seeing, have even been given the honor of being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Drive under Germany's longest cable-stayed bridge, the Rügen Bridge. In the south of the island of Rügen, the Westrügen Bodden merges into the Greifswald Bodden.
The old town of Wismar is a World Heritage Site. The so-called Pig Bridge is also located here. Discover for yourself the four bronze pigs that adorn the bridgeheads © DR pics/AdobeStock
Culture and good food - around the Greifswalder Bodden.
The classic starting port for a yacht charter on the Greifswalder Bodden is Greifswald . Here you can visit the monastery ruins of Eldena. The Cistercian monastery founded here in 1199 was one of the most important monasteries in this region in the Middle Ages. Not only do the remains of the once impressive brick architecture attract visitors, but today the monastery is regularly used for cultural events, such as concerts or theater performances.
After the cultural excursion, set sail and discover the tranquil atmosphere on the Bodden. The deeply cut bays of the Zudar , Struck and Mönchgut peninsulas make nice retreats for an afternoon stop. If you prefer it a bit busier, the small towns around the Bodden such as Gager , Lauterbach , Seebach or Freest offer good mooring possibilities and pretty fishing villages for a stroll. Don't miss the chance to stop in one of the small fishing villages, to experience the rustic atmosphere there and to try one of the fresh fish dishes.

Journey : Greifswald Bodden - Once to Rügen and back
Christian Tiedt
· 03.12.2022
The season is finally starting! The raging virus has caused a delay of many weeks, and with every additional day spent at home, the desire to get back on the water has grown. May is almost over too, but now the wait is over. At least you can travel within Germany again. Our new start is in the north-east, on the east coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We take over a Beneteau Swift Trawler 35 from Yachtcharter Schulz in the Kröslin marina on the south bank of the Peenestrom. In the coming week, we want to sail around the Greifswalder Bodden, via Usedom to Rügen and return via Greifswald. It will be the first real nautical miles ever for the brand new boat.
Wind from the north-east with force five, gusting to six
The area is not without its challenges: if the wind comes from the north-east, the open flank of the Bodden, an unpleasant, short sea can quickly build up due to the shallow water. Our weather today: wind from the north-east, force five, gusting to six. But we haven't been sitting at home all this time to have our plans thwarted again - even before the start of this trip. We don't have to go straight to Mönchgut, our first destination on Rügen. We decide in favour of Peenemünde on Usedom. It's not much more than a ferry trip, as the harbour is within easy reach just opposite on the north side of the Peenestrom, but we don't mind the wind on the short passage.
Most read articles
We head for the northern harbour, a large basin with a brand new formation of white holiday homes on one side and rustic boat trailers on the other. The permanent berths make for a colourful mix. Some of the floating jetties and the service building are just a week old when we visit, says the harbour master. The area is surrounded by a deep birch forest. The Volksmarine operated a shipyard here until reunification, but hardly any traces of its former use remain - a real idyll!
In the north-west of Usedom, pine forest grows over the island's history
Peenemünde itself is two kilometres away; the town is dominated by the former power station. The block houses the fascinating exhibition of the Historical-Technical Museum. As well as documenting Peenemünde's general military past, which stretched back to 1996, the exhibition focuses on its darkest chapter during the Third Reich: it was here, so close to the Baltic Sea beach, that Wernher von Braun, one of the most controversial personalities of his time, developed and perfected Hitler's wonder weapons, including the Aggregat 4, with an army of engineers until shortly before the end of the war. Better known as V2, the world's first ballistic missile not only claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, but also tens of thousands of forced and slave labourers.
Von Braun himself survived the war and was even able to realise his dream of conquering space. Under his leadership, the Saturn V launch vehicle was later created in the USA, which took the first humans to the moon. The overgrown remains of the test stands from which V2s were fired for testing purposes can still be found today near the coast, in the middle of the peaceful pine forests in the north-west of Usedom.
Although the wind is still in the north-east the next morning, it turns back to the north over the next few hours and decreases slightly. We leave the Peenestrom, which soon flows into the Bodden. The fairway remains narrow, first heading towards the small island of Ruden and then turning back towards Rügen. A whole procession of sailors comes towards us, probably already on their way home at the end of the Whitsun weekend. Further out, more sails can be seen. Nobody has reefed, a good sign. But the sun is blazing. We keep a NNW course until the main channel of the land depression enters from the sea at the "Böttchergrund Ost" and "Landtief West" buoys and we drop off a little. The cape effect is now clearly noticeable and continues to increase until we reach the Mönchgut land shield and the approach to Thiessow.
Blue expanse, warm wind: Mönchgut feels Mediterranean
Between the Groß and Klein Zicker peninsulas lies a shallow bay - the Zicker See - similar to a lagoon. The light-coloured edge of the safe channel can be seen with the naked eye as we carefully head towards the harbour. Its basin is small and used to be reserved for fishermen. Today, the dozen or so guest berths are almost completely full despite the early hour. It's obvious why the harbour is so popular: the surroundings are spectacular, with rolling hills, the Bodden on one side and the open sea on the other. We register with the friendly harbour master and then mingle with the day trippers and holidaymakers. After endless weeks in lockdown, the mood feels liberated. We walk along the dyke over the narrow headland to Klein Zicker, through the pretty village and up to the banks of the Saals. The blue expanse spreads out, a warm wind blows over the dry grass. Mönchgut feels incredibly Mediterranean right now! The advertising slogan "Rügen's most beautiful corner" hardly seems an exaggeration. A plaque tells us that two hundred years ago, the Swedes even wanted to turn this place into a fortified harbour town. What that would have looked like: a little Karlskrona in Western Pomerania.
On the way back, we stop off at the Mönchguter Fischerklause for fresh cod and then secure a box seat for the sunset: the Thiessow beach begins right behind the restaurant, from where a path leads through flowering bushes close to the cliff edge up to the Lotsenberg. But it goes even higher, above the treetops: From the viewing platform of the Lotsenturm tower, the view extends in all four directions. The beacon on Greifswalder Oie in the east is already flashing.
A prince incidentally gave Rügen its first seaside resort
The next morning is market day. Corona makes the rules: Admission is by ticket only. The area is full of stalls and stands. There is Baltic Sea coffee with sea buckthorn, pirogues from Poland and grandma's quark balls. A one-man band in striped shirts provides the musical background with strong vocals. We cast off and leave the Zicker See, the next waypoint is the "Reddevitz" buoy. Once again, the rough waves make for a bumpy ride. The Bodden seems empty, Whitsun is over and the skippers from the capital are back in their offices behind their desks - or in their home offices.
For a stopover on the way to Lauterbach, we head for Having, another elongated bay. From here, a navigable connection leads to Lake Sellin, the Baaber Bek. The harbour in Baabe had been recommended to us in Peenemünde, the location in the middle of green meadows is really wonderful and the guest jetty with boxes is still quite new. If you stay here: The beach promenade on the lake side is two and a half kilometres away. There is also a restaurant, Solthus, right on the harbour.
Vilm was already a restricted area in GDR times: A holiday settlement was built for the comrades of the Council of Ministers
From Having, our course now leads across Stresow Bay towards the south coast of Rügen. To port lies the elongated island of Vilm, whose beech forests are among the oldest in Germany. This is one of the reasons why it is designated as a core zone of the South-East Rügen Biosphere Reserve and access is severely restricted. The passenger ship "Julchen" takes a maximum of 60 visitors a day from Lauterbach on guided tours. Vilm was already a restricted area in GDR times, but for a different reason: back then, it was the visitors themselves who were to be protected from prying eyes by dense woodland. A holiday settlement was built for the comrades of the Council of Ministers. The thatched houses still stand today. The Honeckers also came here to recuperate from their tireless efforts on behalf of the working class.
After we have passed Vilm, the approach to Lauterbach begins. The im-jaich marina not only offers a complete service from the water tap to winter storage, but also a whole "holiday world": Boats share the jetties with pile houses and swimming houses, which can be hired. Incidentally, those seeking harmony with nature do not have to cross over to Vilm: The "Path of Leisure and Knowledge" begins on the northern shore of the small bay opposite the harbour and leads the seeker to the Goor, a wooded area of copper beeches and English oaks, which is also part of the biosphere reserve but can be walked through. Those looking for a more sophisticated experience can take the road to Putbus, around two kilometres away. It is rare to see so much splendour in such a small town: The palace and circus, the theatre in the old stables, the orangery, all in dazzling white, classicism par excellence. Plus the opulent park. The residential town was founded in 1810 by Wilhelm Malte the First, Prince of Putbus, who incidentally also gave Rügen its first seaside resort. Only his castle is missing; it was blown up in 1962. However, there are plans to rebuild it. Berlin sends its regards!
Chains rattle, and the wooden supporting structures creak open for the sailors
It's time to say goodbye to Rügen! The journey now takes us southwards, over to the mainland and the Dänische Wiek. After our morning in Putbus, time flies by this time; the wind has dropped considerably and is now coming almost from astern anyway. After leaving the Zudar peninsula, which still belongs to Rügen, on our starboard side, we cross the eastern exit of the Strelasund and, after two more course changes, find ourselves in front of the mouth of the River Rieck, which leads to Greifswald. We pass the open barrage and the historic bascule bridge, Wieck's landmark, lies ahead. We are a little too early for the opening time on the hour at 5 p.m., and two sailors are already waiting. Then we discover a free, sufficiently wide box at the harbour office. We quickly decide to moor up.
After registering, we stroll to the bridge, where the attendants are working hard on the cranks. Chains rattle and the wooden supporting structures creak open for the sailors. We pick up some fried fish at the Reusenhaus, cross the closed bridge from Wieck to Eldena on the south bank (both are districts of Greifswald) and eat our delicious "catch" on the beach of the Dänische Wiek.
Faith, hope and love - not the worst motto
At 10 a.m. the next day, we start cranking. The following stretch on the Ryck is short but beautiful, a real river trip. Waving reeds on both sides, the dyke on the port side with a cycle and footpath and tall trees behind it, flood meadows on the starboard side. In between a jetty, then after two nautical miles more and more moorings on the shore, a new development area, the marina yacht centre and finally the museum harbour, where two moorings have just become available at the guest pier near the fishing tower (with the harbour master's office). In front of us is a Dutch tjalk with a Bible verse on the bow: "Cor. 13:13". Google tells us what it means: "Faith, hope, love". Speaking of names: Greifswald calls itself a Hanseatic and university town - and quite rightly so. There are 10,000 students for every 60,000 inhabitants, many of whom are sitting in the sun on the riverbank today, two beach bars are serving drinks, and Lou Reed's voice hovers over the water: "Oh, such a perfect day".
We are drawn towards the city centre, flanked by gabled facades from the late Renaissance, concrete slabs from the GDR era and university buildings of all ages and everywhere. But even here, all roads lead to the centre, where the power of the Hanseatic League was immortalised in brick. The town hall and the towering Nikolaidom cathedral epitomise this era. A wonderful end to our cruise around the Greifswald Bodden - and the perfect time for a break. The Störtebeker brewery pub on the east side of the market square is just right! We take a table outside on the pavement and let all our new impressions pass us by once again. A place in the fresh air is always the better choice - and not just in times of pandemic.

Nautical information
The precinct.
With an area of around 500 km2, the Greifswald Bodden is by far the largest body of water of its kind along the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Like all lagoons, it is quite shallow; the average depth is 5.6 metres, although there are many much shallower areas, especially near the coast. This is another reason why it is important for those unfamiliar with the area to keep to the buoyed fairways. Additional restrictions and rules also apply to areas designated as protection zones I and II of the South-East Rügen Biosphere Reserve.
Further information can be found on the nautical chart, in the nautical literature and on the Internet at www.elwis.de (Search term: Rügen navigation regulations)
Driving licence
The official "Sport boat licence, area of validity sea" is required for the boat in the area.
The nautical infrastructure is good in all parts of the area, most of the moorings are pile boxes, larger marinas also have floating docks. The harbours we visited were: Marina Kröslin , Peenemünde North Harbour Thiessow harbour, Marina Lauterbach Wieck harbour, Museum harbour Greifswald .

About SEA EAGLE
View all yachts for charter
As well as being an aesthetically alluring yacht, one with real presence on the water, this is a yacht that regularly sails at double-digit speeds and takes a matter of minutes to go from anchored to sailing. She can harness the natural power of the wind and convert it into a blistering 22 knots, her vertical bow slicing through the waves with barely a whisper. SEA EAGLE is a yacht that places you at one with nature.
The sheer exhilaration of sailing at this speed cannot be overstated. There is a feeling of being connected to a natural force. This pace also makes it easy for her to relocate quickly, allowing you to sail where you want without sacrificing valuable time. When the day is calm, the yacht’s two large engines keep the itinerary on track.
Despite her ocean-taming pace and beguiling good looks, SEA EAGLE is very comfortable underway, ensuring utmost comfort when moving around on board in any conditions. Her highly experienced crew are available to help with your every need.
At anchor her vast deck spaces transform into a playground of possibilities. See the sun set with a cocktail on the flybridge as the chef prepares an informal dinner on the BBQ. Watch a movie on a huge screen in the main deck’s outdoor cinema or climb into the eagle’s nest that rises up the main mast to enjoy thrilling bird’s-eye views of your anchorage.
Enjoy a pre-dinner drink at the inside-outside bar on the main deck aft or take lunch in the open-air dining table shaded by the overhang before stretching out on the expansive aft deck. For special occasions there’s a formal dining room and lounge with wraparound views.
If you want to venture ashore to explore, she has a midships boarding platform that can be used in any conditions. Otherwise access to the water is via the folding swim platform aft, where the crew is ready to help you enjoy a vast range of watertoys, from waverunners to e-foils, SeaBobs to sailing dinghies, scuba diving kit to kayaks and SUPs.
When it’s time for bed, she has extremely versatile accommodation on the lower deck with two master suites, three twin suites and a gym that can convert into a children’s cabin, a nanny’s cabin with cot, or a staff cabin.
If your guests are seeking to understand the epic power of nature, appreciate the wonder of the ocean and revel in a seven-star retreat, no other sailing yacht delivers like SEA EAGLE. All this while enjoying a wonderful holiday afloat with a crew that everyone loves. Book your unforgettable charter today.

- Luxury Riverboats Are Giving Superyacht Charters a Run for Your Money
Once the ugly-duckling cousin to oceangoing superyachts, many riverboats now offer similar levels of luxury, comfort, and service. They can also access historic cities or remote deltas where no superyacht can venture.

With the rise of expedition yachting in remote destinations such as Antarctica , Greenland, and Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, there’s a general belief that all corners of the globe are now accessible by private yacht charter.

“River cruising is the beneficiary of a larger travel trend in which luxury travelers are looking to do nothing,” Daniel Levine, director of New York consultancy Avant-Guide Institute , tells Robb Report . “By that, I mean they can visit multiple ports and soak up plenty of culture and history, all without changing hotels.”
This new fleet of river cruisers can access inland cities and remote stretches of countryside that are inaccessible to large oceangoing vessels. Plus, Levine says, there’s an added advantage to river travel: no seasickness.
One leader of the new set of purpose-built riverboats is Aqua Expeditions , the luxury river cruise operator whose first vessel, Aria Amazon , set sail on the Peruvian Amazon in 2011. Over a decade later, the fleet has grown to three river ships, none with more than 20 suites, cruising both the Amazon and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, along with two oceangoing yachts in the Galapagos and Eastern Indonesia.
“On my river ships, 30 percent of departures are now private buyouts, similar to traditional charters,” says founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. These clients, mainly multigenerational family groups or large gatherings of friends, are people who tend to vacation on yachts rather than the typical cruise ship crowd. Most of them have come to the riverboats, says Galli Zugaro, after chartering one of Aqua Expeditions’ two yachts.
The desire for off-the-beaten-track travel is fueling this new interest in riverboat charters, says Frédéric Crétin, a Monaco-based charter broker at superyacht brokerage Camper & Nicholsons . “We’ve had a surge in enquiries for the Peruvian Amazon, especially with Americans since it’s not too far from home,” says Crétin, who manages whole-boat bookings for the Aqua Expeditions fleet.
Heritage Line operates five traditionally styled ships along the upper and lower Mekong River and in Vietnam’s Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. “Our vessels, particularly our small-ship sailing charters on Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay, have seen an increase in private stays,” says CEO John Tue Nguyen. “We now average 12 to 15 charters annually, including families, multi-generational bookings and VIP travelers.”
In Egypt, a gap in the market to showcase the country’s temples in a private, exclusive way, was behind the launch of the Nile River’s first luxury charter yacht in 2022, Berge . “Our clients are mostly royal families, politicians, celebrities, and athletes,” says Armen Kazazian of Kazazian Cruises , the yacht’s owner. “They don’t want to share the Egypt experience with hundreds of other people.”
The 180-foot, nine-cabin vessel has recently been joined by a sistership, the 196-foot, nine-cabin Arax . True to superyacht protocol, charters are secured with an official MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association contract, and in the lead-up to the charter, a preference form is sent out to gather information on dietary preferences and daily routines to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.
The differences also include having no water toys as one would on a conventional yacht charter. “But we overcome that with the destination and experiences, such as candlelit dinners on private islands,” says Kazazian. Maybe. But being restricted to a single route on a river is also fundamentally different than port-hopping along the Med or Caribbean.
Inland cruising has multiple benefits, insists Matthew Shollar of Transcend Cruises , Europe’s first charter-only, river-cruise company. “You’re not just in coastal locations and you can take your whole group off the boat to a spa, or go biking, or shopping,” Shollar says. “And a riverboat always docks close to your destination.”
In September 2025, the company’s first ship, the 443-foot Transcend , will launch, with a second identical vessel following in early 2026. Penned by Tillberg Design of Sweden, both are built to European riverboat specs but draw inspiration from superyachts for style and amenities, including a 2,600-square-foot indoor/outdoor fitness area that includes a gym, spa, and guest wellness facility.
“The single most expensive piece of equipment on board is a hot tip from superyachts, a 144-inch C Seed unfolding television,” continues Shollar. “It’s a worthwhile investment for guests to enjoy everything from silent discos to movie nights on the sun deck.”
The company soft-launched Transcend Advance this summer to better examine the private market’s potential. It took over a five-star vessel from Riverside Luxury Cruises. One client, celebrating his 60th birthday party, had never considered a riverboat charter, but was lured by being able to host many more guests. “We designed a six-day itinerary that was flexible and unique,” says Kimberly Daley, Transcend’s chief revenue officer. “It enabled him and his friends to see chartering in a whole new way.”
Transcend will sail “the highest-demand European waterways,” including the Rhine, Danube, and Moselle, offering waterside access to historic cities like Trier, Budapest, and Belgrade.
But a second collection of smaller luxury barges is carrying charter to canals and smaller waterways. Both Belmond’s 128-foot Coquelicot and European Waterways’ Kir Royale launched in France’s Champagne region this year, with a max capacity of six and eight guests, respectively, and the possibility of whole-boat bookings. This combination of space, intimacy, pastoral views and access to exceptional vineyards can’t be replicated on oceangoing yachts.
While luxury riverboats are still a small niche compared to the larger world of superyacht charters, they offer another kind of cruising experience, one that combines slow-moving water with a relaxed lifestyle in some of the most scenic destinations on the planet.

To be represented by Premium Yachts, Ferretti Yachts and Riva , two prestigious brands of the Ferretti Group, will be present at the Moscow International Boat Show 2013, displaying motor yacht Ferretti 530 as well as Riva Iseo yacht tender.
Luxury motor yacht Ferretti 530
Luxury yacht Ferretti 530 was very keen to undertake in collaboration once again with AYT – Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project . The compact dimensions, 16 meters long and almost 5 meters wide, allow the 530 yacht to deliver grand Italian luxury and cruising immersed in such comfort until now unheard of in a yacht of this size.
Ferretti 530 yacht boasts three revolutionary innovations: the full beam master cabin with chaise longue and two large open view windows that make it a real suite at sea level bathed in light, tones and the natural essences of teak. Moving the galley from the center to the aft section creates a unique open space that includes the saloon, galley, cocktail bar and the dining area, the cockpit area continues thanks to the tilting window. The roll bar free sky lounge and the spoiler allow the 530 a sporty appearance combined with elegantly formal lines.
Ferretti 530 Yacht - Interior
Riva , the iconic Ferretti Group brand, presented a new model at the historical Lake d’Iseo shipyards in July 2011. Featuring elegance and ease of transportation as its distinctive characteristics, Iseo superyacht tender , a 27 foot runabout, is destined to become a must-have for those who love cruising on both lakes and the sea, and, most importantly, design enthusiasts. It is also perfect for anyone wishing to enhance their yacht with an exclusive tender that will never go unnoticed.
Riva Iseo superyacht tender
Due to its ease of manoeuvrability and size, Iseo yacht tender is also ideal as a tender for large yachts. Innovative and elegant, it can also guarantee comfort in bad weather conditions. Besides the electrohydraulic bimini top, it was also designed with a waterproof, automobile-style soft top which protects those on board against water and the wind during cruising.

Cruising with children : Mother-son crew experience an adventure every day on Rügen

Cruise begins with buoy overboard manoeuvre - safety first
Children have become reliable sailors - that's relaxing, towing manoeuvres with the biga become almost routine, the weather on the cruise is capricious and makes for teamwork, tips for sailing with children.
Text by Betty Pabst
Although no wind is forecast, we sail across the Greifswalder Bodden with three knots of speed and a tailwind. The sun is shining. The voice of Agnes Obel sounds softly from the jukebox. The rugged coastline of the Mönchgut peninsula gets smaller and smaller astern. My crew are Hans and Ede, ten and 13 years old. They are lounging in the cockpit, sun-tanned, their hair tousled and blond. Ede casually holds the tiller in his hand. We have three weeks of sailing together in our wake.
One last night at anchor off Palmer Ort, the south-eastern tip of Rügen at the entrance to the Strelasund. Here we can sail very close to the beach, the shore area is deep enough. As the sun sets, the wind dies down. The next day we have to return to Dänholm, the small island off Stralsund, the starting point of our holiday. The boys' dad, my ex-partner, is waiting for us there. We just miss the train at the Ziegelgrabenbrücke bridge in front of the island. So we moor up at the dolphin and pass the waiting time with a game of cards. Just as the bridge opens, heavy rain sets in. It pours like buckets, accompanied by thunder and lightning - what a brilliant end to our trip!

It started in the deepest inland: at a boat crane in Saxony. "Frida", our Biga 22 with centreboard, built in 1984, has its home port in the Leipzig Sailing Club on Lake Cospuden, which was created by the flooding of a former open-cast lignite mine in the south of Leipzig. Once a year we take her to the Baltic Sea. That means: laying the mast, uncraning, taking the trailer on the motorway, craning in, setting up the mast. It's a lot of work, but we usually get help and we've got the moves down pat.
The very first evening on the Dänholm makes us forget all our troubles. The sound is as smooth as glass in front of us, three seals play in the evening light. The silhouette of Stralsund is getting ready for the evening. Only the Hiddensee lighthouse remains dark. It is currently being renovated, we learn later. The children splash around in the water until it gets dark.
The next morning, "Frida" also enters the water. Harbour master Toni warns: "Get going, there's a storm forecast!" He and two colleagues lend a hand setting the mast. I am already tensioning the shrouds in the pouring rain. This year's summer weather is on the horizon and puts our patience to the test. After a short time, the children start running around below deck. The only thing that helps is a clear announcement: "Play outside!" Fortunately, there is no democracy on board - the skipper is in charge. In most cases, the children accept this - unlike sometimes in everyday life on land.
Finally, "Frida" is ready to sail. But a big fright at the first cast off: The engine stalls when we engage the clutch. The ship drifts through the harbour, but we get a line to a bollard. Luckily, it's only the badly seated valve on the petrol line, which is quickly fixed with the help of a strap. We breathe a sigh of relief and set course for Hiddensee. Shortly afterwards, the crew have to be persuaded a little to perform the first buoy overboard manoeuvre. But safety first. We have plenty of room to practise in the Kubitzer Bodden. We keep our distance from the coastguard at anchor to avoid any misunderstandings.
In case the children have to fish me out of the water, I show them the Q-tack manoeuvre. It works in almost all conditions if you have good control of the boat under sail. And they both know how to sail. It gives us security to know what to do in an emergency, even if it hopefully never happens. And the manoeuvre is fun too, especially if it works at the first attempt.
Hiddensee is familiar to us. We call at the island at least once on every cruise in the Baltic Sea. The fairway is very narrow in some places, and the water is only knee-deep at the buoy line. And of course, as always, the ferry comes towards us at the narrowest point. So we wave extensively in the direction of the island tourists, while "Frida" dances wildly in the ferry's wave with her sail flapping.
Unlike in previous years, I can now switch off while sailing. Ede and Hans stay on course, they can read the nautical chart and know the fairway markings. In general, it's worth trusting the children to do something. They learn to judge their own limits better. For example, the big one made his first mooring manoeuvre in Stahlbrode. Even last year, it could happen that the boys were so captivated by another boat when mooring that they completely forgot what they actually wanted to do with the lines in their hands. So I was always prepared to do everything on my own if necessary. Since then, they have grown considerably, also as sailors.
A good friend of ours accepts our mooring lines in Kloster. It's wonderful to be welcomed like this in the harbour. The Palucca Academy of Dance from Dresden is currently making a guest appearance on the island. Every day, the young dancers perform choreographies they have developed themselves at various locations. There is a lot going on on the island. But there are also quiet corners and empty beaches - thanks to the stormy, cool weather.
Störtebeker history in Ralswiek with plenty of spectacle
We let the wind blow through us on the beach. The children play with the waves that splash up against the stones of the sea defences. When our trousers are wet from the spray, we get rid of them and throw ourselves into the waves with loud cheers. Between the seaweed and the breaking sea, we have a blast until our teeth are chattering. A tourist in a thick jacket and woolly hat can't help but grin.
The next night we anchor in the Great Jasmund Bodden. It's hard to believe that we're on an island, the other shore is so far away. After a heavy downpour, the sun shines again. A double rainbow frames our boat. Magical light and a mirror-smooth sea. We have the expanse of the Bodden to ourselves: not another ship in sight. I invite my crew to Ralswiek. There, the story of Klaus Störtebeker and his Likedeelers is told on a large natural stage. Spectacular with lots of fire, noise, horses and eagles on stage - the children are thrilled. I miss some depth in the dialogue.
The harbour in Ralswiek is quiet and very sheltered at the southern end of the Great Jasmund Bodden. The town only fills up with travellers in the afternoon, with whole busloads of Störtebeker visitors strolling through the village and harbour. On board, you get the feeling of being Störtebeker's opening act, with so many people strolling along the jetty. Some sailors come here because the evening fireworks can also be seen from the harbour. Like our jetty neighbours. They are here every year and are therefore experts on the changing Störtebeker stories. Before we set off towards the open-air theatre, they call out to us: "Take some cushions with you!"
Cruise leads to former NVA base
When we want to continue, the wind comes from the south-west. We therefore decide to anchor on the eastern side of the Bug peninsula in Wieker Bodden. The nautical chart shows a jetty south of the Wittow sailing club. As we approach, however, we realise that no boat has been able to moor here for 30 years, it is so broken and rotten. We prefer to anchor.
In GDR times, the bow was a base for the NVA speedboat fleet and therefore a restricted military area. A huge harbour basin is still closed to pleasure craft today, but with its rusty quay walls it would not be particularly inviting either. At the end of the 1990s, most of the buildings and military facilities were demolished and plans were made to build a leisure resort including a harbour. However, the project has been on ice ever since, not least due to opposition from a citizens' initiative. Now you can book ornithological walks in the nature reserve and listen to the diverse songs of the birds from the old concrete slab roads.
At night, the wind picks up and turns to the south. "Frida" rocks violently and tugs at the anchor line. It's hard to say whether we've drifted a little or the wind has pushed the water away. In any case, we are stuck the next morning. But no problem thanks to the shallow draught of the Biga. I pull the boat into deeper water on foot.
Birthday with guests in a tiny overgrown bay on the Wampen
We want to go to Hiddensee again. The wind is blowing from the west again. It is not possible to tack in the narrow channel. So for a short distance we have to swap the quiet splashing of the waves for loud engine roaring and the smell of petrol. We are glad when we can drop off at the last buoy and calm returns. We usually only start our outboard motor during harbour manoeuvres. We often watch in amazement as large yachts motor in from astern in a wonderful wind. The children then proudly announce: "Why aren't they sailing?"
Neuendorf harbour is the quietest on Hiddensee, but also the smallest. It's already full in the early afternoon. As we enter the harbour, I see a dinghy cruiser in a box. On board is a dad on a cruise with two children, aged nine and eleven. We quickly agree that they will move to one side for us. A little later, we adults are chatting and four children are out exploring together. There are remarkably few other children in the harbours, so all four are delighted to have company. And so we decide to continue sailing together for the next few days.
So the six of us celebrate Ede's 13th birthday with cake and champagne in a tiny overgrown bay on the Wampen. Our boats are almost ashore in front of the stern anchors and the bows. The dredged hole was created in the 1980s and has been left to its own devices ever since. There are kingfishers and sea eagles here. A young fox watches our colourful troop. The entrance is difficult to recognise and also very shallow: For a moment there is only 30 centimetres of water under the keel, with a draught of 55 centimetres with the centreboard retracted. Whoever finds it must leave the marker, a stick in the water, on the starboard side.
We are the only ones in this wild idyll on this day. In the distance, we can see the hall of the Stralsund Volkswerft shipyard. Ede's birthday present, a tent, is set up by the children on the other side of the bay. To spend the night, they paddle their belongings packed in waterproof bags to the shore on the SUP. After a brief instruction - "Don't cross the water alone at night!" - two of the children set off at dusk to their adventurous sleeping spot. Luckily, our new friends have small radios with them. But they are not needed at all. In the morning, there is a rumble and two excited boys climb back on board. They report that the fox was sitting outside the tent entrance in the morning.
Our cruise continues eastwards and our friends set off for Stralsund. Two sea eagles are perched on a pylon in the Strelasund. Fascinated by the sight, we lose our course in the fairway. Our centreboard promptly digs itself into the mud. I grumble and am so busy manoeuvring the boat back into deeper water that I don't notice another sailor waving his towline. His boat is really stuck.
The children make sure that we come to his aid. We take over his line and try to drive under motor with our stern against his. This turns out to be difficult because the strong crosswind keeps pushing "Frida" into the shallows. But then we manage it, the towline tightens and, cheered on loudly, we pull the sailor off the flat. "I've been sitting here for a while and lots of people have sailed past," says the rescued man, visibly relieved. How sad that it's obviously no longer a matter of course for everyone to help each other on the water. It was great for my crew, as they are real fans of the sea rescuers. During the next towing manoeuvre on our trip, this time a sailor got stuck behind the harbour entrance of Baabe, we almost had a routine. Everything goes quickly and skilfully. We high-five each other - and have grown together as a crew once again
During the next towing manoeuvre, this time a yachtsman got stuck behind the harbour entrance of Baabe, we almost have a routine. Everything goes quickly and skilfully. We high-five each other - and have grown closer as a crew.
After a rainy day in Thiessow on the Mönchgut, we set off to sail across the Greifswalder Bodden towards Wreechen. There is a beautiful anchorage 1.5 nautical miles south-west of Lauterbach. A dark cloud front is approaching from the south-west. However, no thunderstorms are forecast, so rain is to be expected. There is plenty of rain this summer.
As the wind picks up, I climb forwards to tie in the reef. Suddenly a gust hits the sail with force. The Biga heeled alarmingly and almost went off course. Ede leans on the tiller with all his weight. We hoist the mainsail completely and furl the genoa to towel size. Fortunately, we have good mast sliders, so the main falls down by itself as soon as the halyard is released. At the same time, a downpour sets in. By now, all three of us have been hauled in. We pulled a line on both sides of the boat at the start of the trip.
An impressive wave quickly builds up. I steer "Frida" so that she doesn't cross the waves. This way we are sailing steadily, but we are drifting in the wrong direction. What's more, the short, steep waves toss us back and forth. The bow can't manage a tack, so we jibe "Frida" to at least drift in the right direction. After three-quarters of an hour, the spook is over and we can get out. Soaking wet and still slightly high on adrenalin, we share our joy at having mastered a good challenge on the trip.
Baabe inspires, but the cruise is coming to an end
We moor at Bollwerk, the cosy little harbour in Baabe. The friendly harbour master recommends the "Moritzburg" restaurant on the opposite side. From there you have a great view of the harbour, the Having and the Mönchgut. The waiter answers our question about fish fingers and chips with a humorous frown: "Nah, we don't do that here." The fish platter tastes delicious. We sit for so long that we later have to call the ferryman to get us back to our boat on the other side of the water.
The next day we are standing on the Baltic beach in Baab: colourful towels everywhere, beach shells and hundreds of bathers despite the cloudy weather. We are at a bit of a loss, the children don't feel like swimming. Then we discover Surf & Sail Baabe, a sailing school. Ede and Hans are thrilled and borrow a Topaz, a sporty two-handed dinghy. We quickly rigged it up, waited for the next rain front and got out on the water. The boys let off steam on the boat and practise rolling turns. The sailing instructor is so pleased with the two of them that he lets them sail for much longer than the rented hour. I sit on the beach and have time to write.
Finally, we head back across the Greifswalder Bodden, heading for Palmer Ort. The trip and our time together on "Frida" went by far too quickly. We make plans: next time we'd like to spend the whole holiday, or even better, another six months. Will school and dad go along with it? A friend always says: "There are holidays and there are trips with children." For me, our trip was definitely both.
- Involve the children in all preparations and work where possible
- Trust in the children's abilities and take them seriously when they dare to try new things for themselves
- Discuss everything, make decisions together
- Prepare and discuss manoeuvres in good time and distribute tasks
- The children should be able to swim well, which makes a lot of things easier
- A coach's whistle can be useful to call the children if they get too far away while swimming or on the SUP
- Always wear life jackets, then you can't forget to put them on at the crucial moment and the children get used to them
- Calmly discuss how important it is on board that announcements are followed, especially when things have to be done quickly. This can be discussed later when the boat is safely in harbour or at anchor
- Agree on fixed rules on board, preferably together at the start of the journey
- Don't sail too long legs unless the crew feels like it
- A small, seaworthy boat is great because the children can then do a lot and everything is easy to operate
- Plan from day to day, according to wind and weather. Pre-determined destinations can quickly cause stress on the trip
- Take travel peps against seasickness in case the going gets rough
