Extreme cruises: Sailing around Cape Horn on 45m Salperton

Some people buy a boat just for glamour or racing. Others buy a yacht to embark on the voyage of a lifetime. The owner of 45 metre superyacht Salperton (now Palmira_) talks to_ Sam Fortescue about his epic adventure in Patagonia.

Having owned large sailing yachts for 21 years, Barry Houghton knew exactly what he wanted when he commissioned Salperton . On delivery in 2009, the 45-metre sloop was already prepared for high latitudes, with extra heating, vast tankage (22 tonnes of fuel and 12 tonnes of water) and eight freezers for extended cruising.

Houghton spends 16 to 20 weeks per year on board, and was longing to see Chile and the Falkland Islands. “I’d lived in Verbier, Switzerland, for 21 years, so I love mountains. I wanted to go trekking first of all, so I combined that [at Torres del Paine National Park] for three weeks prior to meeting the boat.”

He joined ship in Punta Arenas, after the yacht’s demanding downwind run from New Zealand . “We underestimated the Roaring Forties – 24 days when the crew saw no one and nothing. In that time, they had hardly any sail up; running downwind with just a small staysail, hitting 25 knots – they must have been close to broaching many times.”

Obtaining their cruising permit from the Chilean authorities, the first thing they had to do was to mend their blown-out mainsail in a makeshift tent on the commercial dock. But the weeks of cruising that followed were sublime, in good conditions, Houghton remembers. “I didn’t fill the boat with guests. The only people who came on were good friends I knew well.” They cruised from anchorage to anchorage with a guide – a Yorkshireman who had worked with famed sailor Skip Novak for many years. They’d often hike for hours, revelling in the wildness of the Beagle Channel.

With little love lost between Argentina and Chile , it was essential to stay in permitted waters – the more so because Houghton wanted to continue on to the Falklands.

The highlights of the trip? “We had a close-range encounter with a condor,” he says. “It flew within 20 metres of us; it had absolutely no fear. Also, the drama of the glaciers, without any shadow of a doubt. And having the ability to hike in absolute nature, with no one and nothing around. Just the pure splendour of nature, the remoteness and the silence.”

RECENT UPGRADES

Salperton has just completed a major 5 year class survey and refit, with overhaul of all major systems as outlined below:

A full rig pull and service of the rig, boom and mandrel

A full sail service including maintenance, repairs and service of all furlers

Replacement of all halyards and sheets

Replacement of all rig lighting and camera

Removal of anchors and chains and approval by Lloyds

Removal of anchor arms and replacement of all hydraulic hoses to mast and boom where necessary

Replacement of all seals to all hatches, including saloon opining roof, window and doors

Replacement of hydraulic rams to swim platform and seals

Replacement of all bulwark lighting

Re-engineering of stanchions/casting fittings and insulation to ensure no differential material corrosion

Shot blast and re-coat all deck and anchor lockers

Repaint of all bulwarks and superstructure

Repaint hull areas as necessary and Silicone polish complete hull

Anti foul hull and keel and surface treat propeller

Inspect and check rudder bearings and make small repairs to carbon rudder as necessary

Remove prop-shaft and replace all bearings

Re-build main engines including new head

Overhaul ( service ) both generators

Service air conditioning 

Service water makers

Replace with new or rebuild all bilge pumps

Replace main water circuit pumps

Upgrade ships computer management system and replace screens and CPU

Replace all LD lighting

Re-lacquer all internal woodwork

Re-enamel all internal metal work

Strip down and re-coat all internal woodwork flooring

Replace crew mess seating

Construct new double bed in Captain’s cabin and add a pull-down Pullman so it can be used for either a couple or two singles

Replace washing machines to galley

Replace induction hob

Rebuild galley ventilation extract system

Complete re-build including new engine, outdrive, propellers, controls and tubes for main tender

Re-varnish of external furnishings

Re-upholster all external seating

Replace all weather protection covers for tender external seating and controls

A General Description of Sailing Yacht SALPERTON III

Being built by the Fitzroy Yachts Limited shipyard in New Zealand the SALPERTON III is 44 metre 144 (ft) in length. Ready for launch for 2007 her interior decoration demonstrates the contemporary perceptions of the design work of Adam Lay Studio. Superyacht SALPERTON III is able to accommodate up to 7 passengers with 6 professional crew. She could be described as a recent cruising yacht. She is able to attain a top speed of 17 knots.

The New Build & Design for Luxury Yacht SALPERTON III

Dubois Naval Architects was the naval architecture company involved in the formal superyacht composition for SALPERTON III. Also the company Dubois Naval Architects successfully worked on this undertaking. Interior designer Adam Lay Studio was commissioned for the internal interior styling. In 2007 she was actually launched to celebration in New Plymouth and following sea trials and final completion was thereafter delivered to the owner. Fitzroy Yachts Limited completed their new build sailing yacht in New Zealand. Her core hull was crafted from aluminium. The sailing yacht superstructure is made mostly using aluminium. With a width of 9.3 m or 30.5 feet SALPERTON III has spacious size. A reasonably 7 (22.9 ft) draught of 7m (22.9ft) determines the number of harbours she can enter into, taking into account their minimum depth at low tide.

Engineering And The Speed/Range That S/Y SALPERTON III Can Reach:

The C18 D engine installed in the sailing yacht is produced by CATERPILLAR. Coupled to the SALPERTON III engines are a single screw propeller. The main engine of the yacht produces 875 horse power (or 653 kilowatts). She is fitted with 1 engines. The total thrust for the boat is thus 875 HP or 653 KW.

Bestowing space for a limit of 7 yacht guests spending the night, the SALPERTON III accommodates everyone comfortably. The boat requires approximately 6 able crewmembers to run.
