About Perth

Why is Perth a good sailing destination?

Perth, the sun-kissed capital of Western Australia, beckons sailing enthusiasts with its blend of azure waters, gentle breezes, and scenic coastal landscapes. Why is it that Perth stands out as a sailor’s paradise? Let Yachting.Rent guide you through the compelling reasons that make Perth an unmatched nautical destination.

Firstly, Perth’s geographical positioning gifts it with an extraordinary maritime climate. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, it is dubbed the “Sunniest Capital” in Australia. Such consistent sunny weather means more days to set sail, explore, and bask in the splendour of the Indian Ocean. The Fremantle Doctor, a refreshing sea breeze, is not just a cooling respite from the summer heat but also an ideal wind condition for sailing, ensuring smooth and predictable voyages.

The coastal waters off Perth are a mosaic of experiences. The Swan River meanders gracefully, offering sailors tranquil stretches to hone their skills or indulge in leisurely cruises. Its banks adorned with the skyline of Perth on one side and the natural bushland on the other create a picturesque backdrop for every journey.

Further out, Rottnest Island awaits, a short sail away. This iconic island, home to the endearing quokka, is encircled by pristine beaches, secluded coves, and vibrant coral reefs, making it a dream for anchorages and underwater exploration. The maritime heritage of Fremantle, Perth’s port city, is a testament to the region’s rich seafaring history. Its harbours, brimming with historic vessels and modern mega-yachts, exude a timeless charm.

For those who see sailing as not just a journey but an experience, Perth’s marine life is a treasure trove. From frolicking dolphins to majestic humpback whales, the waters here teem with life, turning every sail into a potential wildlife encounter.

With Yachting.Rent, you don’t just sail; you become a part of Perth’s maritime tapestry. Our intimate knowledge of the region’s best routes, hidden anchorages, and prime snorkelling spots ensures that your sailing journey is nothing short of exceptional.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Perth

In the glittering waters of Perth, Western Australia, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran can shape your maritime adventure. Both vessels offer unique experiences, and Yachting.Rent is here to guide you through the nuances of each, ensuring your voyage in Perth’s pristine waters is both memorable and tailored to your preferences.

Sailing Boats: The Traditional Charm A sailing boat, with its single hull and timeless design, is the epitome of classic sailing. For those who seek an authentic connection with the sea, sailing boats provide an intimate feel of the water, with the boat’s gentle tilt responding to the ocean’s whims. Their slender design allows for smooth navigation through narrow channels, making them ideal for exploring Perth’s intricate coastline and the nooks of the Swan River. If it’s the romance of traditional sailing you’re after, with the wind in your sails and the horizon as your guide, then a sailing boat is your vessel of choice.

Catamarans: The Modern Luxury Catamarans, with their twin hulls, bring stability, space, and speed to the sailing experience. Their design ensures a flat and stable voyage, making them perfect for those who are new to sailing or prefer a more laid-back experience. The spacious decks and cabins of a catamaran are synonymous with luxury, offering ample room for relaxation, sunbathing, or hosting a group of friends. With their shallow draft, catamarans can anchor closer to shore, allowing easier access to Perth’s secluded beaches and coves. For those who desire a blend of comfort, speed, and modernity, catamarans stand out as the go-to choice.

Your Journey with Yachting.Rent Perth’s diverse maritime landscape, with its tranquil river stretches, bustling port areas, and expansive ocean vistas, demands a vessel that aligns with your vision of the perfect sail. Whether it’s the allure of tradition with a sailing boat or the promise of modern luxury in a catamaran, Yachting.Rent offers a fleet that caters to every sailor’s dream.

Our team is dedicated to understanding your needs, recommending the ideal vessel, and ensuring your journey in Perth’s waters is seamless. From the initial charter process to providing insights on the best sailing routes, anchorage spots, and local secrets, we are your trusted partners in crafting the ultimate Perth sailing experience.

In the end, whether you choose the rhythmic dance of a sailing boat or the steady grace of a catamaran, the azure waters of Perth promise an unforgettable voyage. Let Yachting.Rent elevate that experience, turning your sailing dreams into cherished memories.

Disclosure: We love how our audience helps us grow. This post may contain affiliate links. Please check our disclosure policy for more information.

Hire a boat in Perth, Western Australia, and you won’t be disappointed with the endless options to enjoy. Meander along the protected Swan River (perfect even on a windy day), visit the number of beautiful wineries along the riverbanks, explore the characterful Freemantle, head over to the stunning Rottnest Island, venture to Garden and Carnac Islands, fall in love with Mandurah, all whilst fishing, swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and even surfing.

Watch this fantastic video for some inspiration on which islands to head to with your boat hire in Perth:

There are plenty of boat hire locations in Perth so you can choose your ideal starting point. Self-drive boat hire is available from Swan River, South Perth, Freemantle, Rottnest Island, Malaga and Mandurah. You can also tow your own boat hire and take it to any destination of your choice.

Love getting wet? Check out the best water parks in Perth for some serious splashing fun or find out where you can hire a jet ski in and around Perth!

Self-drive Boat Hire Perth

Many boat hires in Perth are available for self-drive – some don’t even require a Recreational Skippers Ticket   (or other states’ equivalent to a powerboat licence). We’ll highlight which boat hire operators do and don’t require this so you can easily see which options are best for you:

Boating West

Boating West is one of the bigger and longer established boat hires available across Perth and Western Australia. They have hire locations in Fremantle and Rottnest Island , along with Broome if you were heading north of the state.

Their boats are available to tow away, or ready waiting in the water ready for your water adventure. Vessels include the impressive Centre Cab for serious boaties, the Bow Rider for some serious fun and towing capabilities, and the Tinny – perfect for just getting out on the water. On Rottnest Island, a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB vessel) is available for hire to explore this little piece of heaven!

From the water’s perspective, all locations are ideal for soaking in views of stunning parts of Perth.

A Recreational Skippers Ticket  (or other states’ equivalent to a power boat licence) is required for all hire boats. Boating West offers boat training for this skippers ticket and private lessons for increased confidence.

catamaran sailing south perth

Freemantle Boat Hire

Freemantle Boat Hire is one of the new kids on the block and offers the chance to take your own private charter in one of their self-drive boat hires. We love the saying on their website –

…and they are absolutely right! It just takes the hassle out of it!

Located near Swan River and Cockburn Sound in Freemantle, you can have the boat delivered and waiting in the water for you at any of the boat ramps in the area. If you want to create an even more personalised adventure, hook up the trailer and tow to your favourite spot.

A Recreational Skippers Ticket  (or other states’ equivalent power boat licence) is required for all hire boats.

They have three boats in their impressive lineup, including:

Centre Cab - Boat Hire Perth

The Forward Cab

  • ‘Merv’ – the Velocity 5.5m. This is the largest vessel available and is a plate aluminium forward cab, large decked fishing style vessel, certified for six passengers or up to 450kg. It features a powerful 115hp Mercury four stroke engine, Garmin GPS charts and high quality depth sounder, kill tank, lots of fishing rod storage, large covered area including an undercover cabin with glass, bait board, large esky, swim platform and ladder, fusion audio with Bluetooth and all the required safety equipment. There is a 200L fuel tank onboard, dual batteries, and ‘Merv’ requires a vehicle that can easily tow 2000kg. This vessel is extremely safe and a dry ride no matter what the conditions (within reason!).

The Bow Rider

  • ‘Derek’ – the Quintrex Freedom Sport 5.3m. This family orientated Bow Rider has a 100hp Yahama four stroke engine and is certified for six passengers or up to 450kg. With a popular Australian brand name behind it, features are a front and rear lounge, bimini shade, swim platform and ladder, carpeted floor, Garmin GPS charts and high quality depth sounder, fusion audio with Bluetooth, optional esky and all the required safety equipment. There is a 100L fuel tank onboard, dual batteries, and ‘Derek’ requires a vehicle that can easily tow 1500kg.
  • ‘Geoff’ – the Quantrx Dory 4.27m. The smallest of the fleet is this quality Tinny with a wide body, deep v hull and high tunnels, certified for four people. It is great for fishing and exploring, featuring a 25hp Yamaha four stroke engine, two bench seats, two captain chairs, bimini shade, carpeted floor, Lowrance charts and sounder and all the required safety equipment. There is a 40L fuel tank onboard, and ‘Geoff’ requires a vehicle that can easily tow 750kg.

All boats have full safety equipment (EPIRB, life jackets, flares, first aid kit, fire blanket, extinguishers and VHF radio).

The boats are surveyed to go and explore the gorgeous Rottnest Island, boasting 63 beaches and 20 bays, it’s no surprise that it is known as the beach-lovers paradise. How about Garden Island for a perfect day on the water (both islands are weather permitting)? Check this map for the boundary of partially smooth waters where the vessels are permitted.

Diving. Snorkelling. Swimming. Surfing. Fishing. Relaxing. Recharging. The choice is yours with this self-drive boat hire in Freemantle, Perth.

Smartwave Hire, Perth

Smartwave Hire operates through Searano Marine, Malaga, near Perth. These virtually unsinkable New Zealand built 4800mm poly boats are great for exploring the local coastline. Onboard there is a 50hp Honda outboard engine, reinforced transom, Garmin fish finder and chart plotter, anchor storage with anchor, bilge pump, two fishing rod holders, T-Top for sun protection and all the safety equipment required.

These boats have passed survey requirements and can operate in all open waters off Western Australia. They are surveyed for four persons to travel up to 15 nautical miles offshore but are restricted to 5 nautical miles. You can go further, but they need to be notified of your schedule. You can even take these boats to Rottnest Island!

Smartwave self-drive boat hires are available on a tow and go basis only, on a Dunbier trailer. A minimum hire period is for one day with a valid Recreational Skippers Ticket  (or other states’ equivalent to a power boat licence) and a suitable vehicle with a tow ball to pull.

The dedicated and enthusiastic staff will provide you with tuition before you head out to ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the Swan River. Don't be surprised if you receive a friendly visit from resident dolphins, black swans and pelicans as you sail. Please note: Each catamaran is $60. You are able to take up to another 3 passengers with you at no additional charge!

Session Length

This experience is one hour in duration plus a short tuition and demonstration. Available mid September through to May due to seasonality.

Important Information

  • No licence or experience is required
  • The minimum age is five years

Cancellation

  • Change your booking up to 24 hours before the start time of your experience
  • Changes are not permitted within 24 hours of your experience
  • Late arrivals or no shows may result in you forfeiting your experience

Numbers on the Day

Each catamaran can hold up to four participants.

For first time sailors, we suggest that the perfect wind speed is anywhere from eight knots to 14 knots, especially if you are taking children out with you. In the range between 15 knots and 23 knots, the catamarans become quite powerful and the risk of capsize increases. Beyond 24 knots of wind speed, we are generally thinking about suspending sailing, or restricting the area of sailing to a part of the river protected from the wind.

Please wear swimmers and sun protective clothing. Life jackets are provided.

This experience takes place in South Perth, WA.

Funcats Logo icon.png

At Funcats, we’ve been committed to customer satisfaction since the moment we opened in 1975.  Originally the business was started to provide midweek Sail Training Classes for school children, but the popularity of our catamarans took off with the public, and in no time we had moved to opening 7 days a week.

Over many years the business grew in size and popularity to the point where it has become the largest catamaran hire business in Australia. It is not uncommon to have the entire fleet of 40 catamarans sailing on the Swan River right in front of the City.

Today Funcats has evolved into a true Watersports business with Catamarans, Stand Up Paddle Boards and Kayaks. Our customers include Locals, Visitors, Parties, School and Corporate groups.

Funcats really has something for everyone and all are welcome!

This crusty old sailor has been involved in boating his whole life. As a child his family were involved in water skiing, so he learnt to ski at age 5, and by 9 years of age he was already barefoot skiing. He went on to represent Western Australia 5 times, held a state record for ski jumping, and won a silver medal at a national championship in Slalom skiing.

In 2011 Andrew and Jane purchased a cruising catamaran in La Rochelle,  France, and sailed it back to Australia. Sixteen countries, including Spain, Portugal, Antigua, Aruba, Panama, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands. Andrew claims that if people are suffering insomnia he has the cure, just ask him about his travels!!

Andrew LOVES boats and will go out of his wa y to help people love them too….but be warned if you mistreat his boats he will tell you!

She provides 1:1 instruction for our structured Paddle Board lessons. But, this isn’t her only role, she also teaches sailing, kayaking, and there's every chance you might see also her out on the water assisting people in one of our rescue dinghies!

Away from work Sally is former state representative tennis player, and still plays in the state league competition for Dalkeith Tennis Club.

Answers You Need

Do you have a question? Looking for more information about the rental process, the services we offer, or the brands we carry? Check out our list of frequently asked questions below for some quick answers. If you still have something on your mind, please reach out to a member of our team. We’ll be more than happy to get you the answers you need.

  • Do I need to book before I come to Funcats? For anything less than 3 catamarans there is no need for you to book. Even if all of our catamarans are being hired we have on average around 10 catamarans returning to the beach every 15 minutes. With our stand-up paddle board and kayaks, we recommend booking online, but we are also happy to take phone bookings on the day you want to hire. We don’t accept phone/email bookings in advance.
  • Do I need experience sailing before I can take one of the catamarans out? No experience is required. We will have you out sailing after a few minutes of easy to understand tuition.
  • Is there parking available at Funcats? Just behind us is a large car park. Parking is $2 per hour up to a maximum of $8 per day. During the Summer School Holidays free parking is provided on the grassed area off Coode Street. We do urge hirers to avoid leaving valuables in their car. If you do not have someone to look after your gear we can safely store it for you.
  • Do you sell Stand Up Paddle Boards? Yes we do! We now stock a range of Red PaddleCo Stand Up Paddle Boards which are available for hire and purchase. Our team can help you find the exact boards to suit your height, weight, fitness level and specific requirements eg: where you want to paddle, how fast etc. Visit our Shop for more information
  • Do you offer Gift Vouchers? Yes we do! You can purchase a gift voucher through our website or pick one up at Funcats in South Perth
  • How do I know if the conditions are okay for me to enjoy a day’s sailing at Funcats? For first time sailors we suggest that the perfect wind speed is anywhere from 8 knots to 14 knots, especially if you are taking children out with you. In the range between 15 knots and 23 knots the catamarans become quite powerful and the risk of capsize increases. Beyond 24 knots of wind speed we are generally thinking about suspending sailing, or restricting the area of sailing to a part of the river protected from the wind . To assist you, click here to visit the Seabreeze Website, and scroll down and view "Melville Water Live Wind Report". If you are still unsure just give us a call on 0408 926 003
  • Do I need to wear a life jacket? Life jackets are supplied free with every hire. It is compulsory for every person to wear a life jacket whenever they are using one of our hire craft. To assist with this we have easy to fit life jackets for both adults and children.
  • How many people can I take on a catamaran? Our catamarans are licensed for 3 or 4 people in total, depending on which boat you choose. Going beyond this number is a breach of our licence agreement. However, it is possible to swap people on and off the beach as many times as you would like.
  • Do I need a boating licence to take one of the boats out? No licence is required to take any of our boats out. Within minutes you will be enjoying your day on the beautiful Swan River.
  • Is there a minimum age for children to be able to sail on the boats? Yes, the minimum age for a person to be on our catamaran boats is 5 years of age. This is part of our licence agreement and is therefore a requirement we must uphold.
  • If I want to learn more and start racing can I do this at funcats. Funcats has regular race nights throughout the season. We have races for both individuals and pairs. Ask our staff about racing at Funcats, without the hassle of owning your own catamaran.
  • Do I have to stay in one area or can I sail wherever I like? Our staff will advise you on the day as to where it is best to sail. This changes from day to day with changes in wind direction and strength. What is most important is that you listen carefully to staff regarding areas of the river to avoid, and do all you can to stay within our sailing boundaries. Our sailing area is designed to make it easier for us to assist you in an emergency. Our sailing areas are devised to keep you and your crew safe.
  • At what age is it safe to take children on a catamaran? 5 years of age is the youngest age we will allow children out sailing on our catamarans. Please be aware there are conditions we would caution against taking children in the 5-9 years of age group out sailing, particularly on days when we have strong wind. If you are unsure we ask that you call us, or discuss this with us at the river.
  • Which payment methods do you accept? We accept all major credit and debit cards, and cash.
  • Do I have to pay per person or just for the boat? All of our rates are for the hire of the boat. The catamarans are licensed to carry 3 or 4 people at a time, and we have no issue with you swapping people on and off the beach.

Western Australia Boat and Yacht Charters

Perth and beyond.

Boating and Yachting in Western Australia provides incredible self sail holidays. The unique part of Australia known as Western Australia offers quality sailing holiday in a relaxing yet adventurous environment. Whether you just want to have a holiday or a trial run for a later cruise in the Mediterranean or Caribbean we have a great range of options. Whatever you want to do our helpful staff is here to help you make your boat and yacht charter holiday the best it can possibly be.

Luxury cruising in the Kimberley is an experience like no other. Here, you can explore amazing rivers, towering red gorges, beautiful waterfalls and untouched forests all from the comfort of a five-star vessel. Luxury cruisers have their very own heli-pad and accommodate limited guest numbers at any one time. Passengers can choose from a variety of fancy cabins, each fully air-conditioned and with a private ensuite. Get a close-up view of freshwater crocodiles, indulge in native figs and fresh oysters and marvel as you sail through towering gorges.

Geographe Bay is a great place for a boat or yacht sailing holiday. Formed behind Cape Naturaliste, its north facing coast line means you are protected from the southerly wind and the south westerly wind. One of the great things about the bay is how peaceful it is, the bay anchorages are quiet and often there usually is only a few other yachts. The nearby Busselton Jetty has been described as Australia’s greatest artificial reef and is host to a wonderful amount of amazing tropical and sub tropical corals, sponges, fish and invertebrates all of which are vividly coloured. The Busselton Jetty Underwater Observatory sits eight metres below sea level and gives an excellent view of the marine life and coral.

Alternatively you can set sail to other great spots like Quindalup, Dunsborough, Eagle Bay, and Bunker Bay. Whether you’re looking for a short break or an extended holiday there is plenty to do in South Australia. Imagine how unforgettable your sailing holiday will be with 360 degree ocean views.

Beautiful beaches are in abundance in Western Australia. One of the most famous is Broome’s Cable Beach. Renowned as one of most beautiful stretches of coastline on earth, Cable Beach provides azure waters bordered by 22 kilometres of pristine white sands. Monkey Mia in Denham, the beach here features lovely sand surroundings, aquamarine waters, and it is here that wild bottlenose dolphins regularly come ashore to play with tourists and receive an easy feed of fish. Dolphins can often be seen around the jetty, where sunset fishing is a popular pastime. With over 12,000 kilometres of unspoiled coastline, there’s a great beach for everyone.

With thousands of kilometres of coastline, hundreds of nearby islands, copious and assorted marine life, a mix of tropical and temperate climates and numerous shipwrecks just offshore, the diving and snorkelling from a boat and yacht charter in Western Australia is unbeatable.

Ningaloo Reef is a 260 kilometre long display of colour and diversity. Contained within it is emerald green lagoons filled with radiating coral and energetic tropical fish, and is one of the few places on earth you can swim alongside whale sharks. Veteran divers will tell you that few experiences can compete with Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef for aquatic life and high water visibility. Swim in the invigorating water at Turquoise Bay and you’ll be within a few metres of the reef, or join a dive boat and go deeper into this amazing underwater domain. The reef is home to abundant marine life including the world’s largest fish – the whale shark, dolphins, dugong, manta rays and turtles.

At Surfer’s Point in Margaret River, the surf is always impressive; it provides powerful ground swells and big waves. Margaret River is a firm favourite with the world’s elite pro-surfers.

The Basin at Rottnest Island is a sheltered lagoon located close to Perth. The Basin is filled with colourful schools of fish and is an ideal spot for a snorkel and swim. The Rottnest shipwreck trail contains 14 shipwrecks which makes it a divers dream. Rottnest Island is just a 30 minute cruise from Fremantle Harbour. This piece of paradise just about has it all – sheltered turquoise lagoons, amazing surf and multiple reefs full with colourful schools of fish, it is truly an aquatic playground. Rottnest Island is a car-free zone for visitors and contains many historic old stone buildings and little marsupials called quokkas, which are active at dawn and dusk.

Near the coastal town of Rockingham you’ll find Penguin Island, home to the largest colony of little penguins on the west coast. You can watch the cute creatures being fed at the Penguin Experience Island Discovery Centre. Visitors can learn more about these magnificent birds through commentaries and displays – or look out for wild penguins nestled in the sand burrows and limestone caverns on the island.

Get ready to set sail on Western Australia’s incredibly peaceful waterways. Yachting is a popular hobby on the clean and tidy banks of the Swan River, where the calm water and strong sea breezes create ideal conditions. Hire a catamaran on the South Perth foreshore, where you can enjoy the view of the city skyline as a fresh breeze whisks you along the river. Yacht clubs are all across the shoreline from Perth to Fremantle some run sailing competitions during the summer. Get a group together and enjoy a day with some friendly rivalry on the water.

Or south of the State, set sail on a private charter, where you can hire a yacht, learn the ropes or simply kick back and enjoy a skippered sail. Seafaring lovers can embark on a self-sail holiday around one of the safest and most scenic cruising grounds in WA – Geographe Bay. Marvel at the white sandy beaches, mischievous dolphins and world-class snorkeling en route. So what are you waiting for? Dive into your next WA boat and yacht charter holiday now!

Perth & Western Australia Yacht Charter

Begin your Australia yacht charter holiday in Perth and you'll be miles from anywhere. Western Australia is adored for its brilliant blue skies, warm sunny climate and white sandy beaches - all the ingredients for the perfect yacht charter. It is a land blessed with some of the world's most precious natural phenomena including the dolphins of Monkey Mia, the 350-million-year-old Bungle Bungle range and the towering karri forests of the South West.

It's almost impossible to try to summarize the assets of such a massive and diverse state. Western Australia has the benefits of natural isolation, size and the merging of the Indian and Southern oceans. These factors provide a cruising environment of rare diversity and abundance. Western Australia's oceans are home to a haven of thousands of fish and marine creatures, great and small. Sounds like the perfect yacht charter vacation. The coastal offshore winds provide the perfect environment for sailing yachts, year round. The summer months around Perth are hot with an average temperature of between 17 and 29 degrees Celsius. The winter months in Perth are from June to August and are mild, with an average temperature of 9-18 degrees Celsius.

Just off Perth, you'll find Rottnest Island. Thousands of people flock there every year to enjoy its preserved natural waters and wildlife. Everyone entering the Rottnest Island Reserve, including the marine reserve, is required to pay an admission fee as a contribution to the conservation of the Island and the provision and upkeep of facilities. Once admission fees have been paid, charter boats may anchor in specified locations. Moving north up the coast, you'll find endless natural reserve islands and archipelago's including Francois Peron National Park in Shark Bay; Ningaloo Marine Park; Barrow Island Nature Reserve and Dolphin Island Nature Reserve - The name speaks for itself. For the trip of a lifetime, take a sea safari into the northern Buccaneer Archipelago. Camp out under the stars on remote beaches and fish collect oysters, bush walk, bird watch or just dream. If you intend on going any further north than that, you're almost on your way to Indonesia .

10 Affordable Cruising Catamarans

  • By Phil Berman
  • Updated: May 24, 2024

Orana 44

So, you want to get a catamaran , sail off into the sunset, and capture some magic with your lover or family for a few years. You have no ambition to sail around the world or to live aboard forever, but think a one- or two-year sabbatical might be life-changing. You’d like to sail the US East Coast, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, perhaps the Med—or up and down the West Coast and on to Mexico and Central America. You have $300,000 or less to spend and want a catamaran you can sell at the end of the journey without consuming a bottle of Tylenol to blunt the pain.

The good news is that this is quite achievable. The bad news is that there is a vast wave of baby boomers who are all looking for the same thing—and for right around the same price. This makes finding a good deal on a great used catamaran a lot of work, even working with a broker. But, it’s possible. You just need to keep an open mind.

The other good news, which might seem surprising, is that an older catamaran, besides being more affordable, might sail just as well—or even better—than the same-size new cat that will cost considerably more. Yes, the older model might have less room inside and lack the latest condo-on-the-water styling, but it was designed and built before the current trend to supersize the newer generations of multihulls at the expense of sailing performance.

Here’s my advice to the cat hunter on a budget: Don’t get too hung up on the length of the boat. Instead, focus on the spatial and payload requirements you seek and which can be achieved within your budget. And best not get too focused on must-have features—what I jokingly call “surround-sound beds.” Catamaran designs and interiors have gone through massive changes in the past 10 to 20 years, and most older designs simply cannot compete with the new ones in terms of space and high-end amenities.

None of the cool cats I have in mind are over 47 feet. This is not because there aren’t bargain boats out there that are 47 feet and longer, but because any larger multihull that you can buy for $300,000 or less will most assuredly need a significant refit or is either very old or very odd. Buying a fixer-upper is, to my mind, the most dangerous thing a budget-minded consumer can do. It’s just too easy to underestimate the cost of yacht refits and repairs due to the extremely high prices charged in most boatyards.

RELATED: 20 Best Cruising and Sailing Destinations

Nearly any cat you buy over 10 years old is fully depreciated. What we were selling a Lagoon 440 for eight or 10 years ago is nearly the same as what they sell for today. The difference between a good deal and a bad deal is tied solely to a yacht’s condition and refit history. As they joke in private-equity circles, “Any idiot can buy; you deserve congratulations only when you sell.”

So, when your search gets underway, focus on condition—it is far more important than the year, brand or features you might crave. And when you find the cat of your dreams, the best way to remove financial-downside risk is to get a great survey and to choose the newest, smallest cat that will work for your agenda, not the oldest and biggest.

– CHECK THE WEATHER – The weather changes all the time. Always check the forecast and prepare for the worst case. Safety Tip Provided by the U.S. Coast Guard

And a word of caution: Your problem will be knowing a good deal from a bad one after the survey is over if you are not well-schooled in pricing. Besides steering you toward potential boats to consider, this is where a broker, working on your behalf, can provide knowledgeable advice. It’s been my experience that this is the point when so many yacht sales come apart: a dispute over the value of a given yacht when the survey results come in. All too commonly we see buyers reject yachts they should have accepted and purchase cats they should have rejected. Remember, a used yacht is a used yacht—not a perfect yacht. A catamaran need not be perfect to remain a perfectly good deal. Here, then, are 10 cool cats to consider in the $300,000-or-less range:

1. Fountaine Pajot Orana 44 (above)

Fountaine Pajot had the misfortune of tooling up this boat just before the global financial crisis, so not that many of them were built between 2007 and 2012. But these were the first of the larger-space charter cats in this size, but not yet so porky that they still could not sail decently. In the three-cabin owner’s version, they designed the living space very nicely; even in the four-cabin version, the aft starboard bed was very well-done.

During this period, Fountaine Pajot had problems with the resin it was using, which led to blistering on the hulls and undersides. Affected models therefore had new bottoms done at approved shipyards throughout the world. Make sure the one you are considering had this done or that it doesn’t show evidence of significant blistering. Honestly it is only cosmetic, but it will impact resale if not repaired. Many consumers think blisters are the end of the world; frankly, they are not.

Catana

2. Catana 431

Built in France by a long-standing yard, the Catana 431 was always a very viable vessel because it is big enough to go anywhere, but not too large for a competent owner to handle. And because the 431 has good underwing clearance and daggerboards, it sails smartly to windward.

That said, there are a few things to watch for. The primary bulkheads on many of these boats were not tabbed on the outer ends, and over time tended to distort. Often this led, or will lead, to a costly replacement of some bulkheads. So be careful to survey these areas properly.

The 431′s furniture is all foam-cored and handmade, but the banding on the outer edges in some cases slowly starts to peel, which allows moisture to infect the wood veneer. This can create a somewhat unsightly appearance in the cabinets and drawers. It is only a cosmetic issue, but it can make the interior feel a bit worn out.

During the period when the 431 was being built, Catana used a distributive electrical card system, and the boats had several modules, each a zone, to which electricity was run. If one thing in a zone stops working, the only solution is to jury-rig a wire from that nonworking item back to the main breaker panel. Replacing the modules or getting them repaired can be done, but it is getting harder by the year. For this reason, the best 431 is a boat that someone else had rewired at some point along the way.

470

3. Lagoon 470

If you need a larger escape pod, the Lagoon 470 is one of our favorites. This model of older Lagoons was built at CNB’s yard in Bordeaux, France, and the build quality was high. The 470 was the first design to have the more-vertical windows that are a Lagoon signature, and ample saloon headroom. The 470s are also old enough that the hulls were not so supersize that it compromised sailing performance. They have decent underwing clearance, so they are not persistent pounders to windward. Many were built with a galley-down layout, some in galley-up style. You will always pay more for an owner version of this or any model.

The big thing you have to concern yourself with on Lagoons of this vintage is that the hulls and decks are made with a balsa core, so it is not uncommon to find moisture problems, especially around deck fittings or hatches. This can sometimes require rebedding or recoring areas, and this sort of repair, in North America, can be a costly undertaking. Make sure you get good moisture-meter readings near all deck fittings and, of course, on the hulls. Hulls, however, tend less often to have moisture issues because there are few fittings through which water can enter the core. Were that to happen below the waterline, it is a real mess that must be repaired immediately and properly.

435

4. Privilège 435

Back when the Privilège 435 was built, Privilège catamarans were constructed by Alliaura Marine in France, and they were truly the Mercedes of the multihull world at that time. While not a performance cat by any means, the 435 was a super-solid yacht, built with great care and the finest components. The 435 is large enough to go anywhere but small enough to handle easily.

The largest negative of this model—and many cats of this vintage—is that the saloon windows slope dramatically, so the interior gets very hot unless the windows are covered most of the time. When they legalize growing pot on catamarans, here’s the perfect greenhouse for it! Seriously, if you should buy a used 435, you really have to get strong sunblocking external UV covers, as well as interior blinds or shades to inhibit heat buildup.

Some of the 435s were laid out with the galley down in one hull, and these days most people want a galley-up arrangement, where cooking and food preparation are done in the saloon. A three-cabin galley-up owner version will be far more sought after and cost more than a four-cabin galley-down version.

Leopard

5. Leopard 46

This was the first of the Morrelli & Melvin collaborations with South African builder Robertson and Caine and the charter companies owned at the time by TUI Marine to create a catamaran that could be sold both into charter under the Moorings brand and also privately as a Leopard, so effort was made to design a boat with good sailing performance. Gino Morrelli did a good job creating a lot of underwing clearance, the 46 has a powerful rig, and yet its interior still offers spacious sleeping areas and nice flow from the cockpit to the saloon. These can be bought as ex-Moorings charter boats for less than $300,000 but are more costly in the sought-after Leopard owner version.

Because these are balsa-cored boats, you must inspect deck fittings carefully for moisture incursion. Some of the earlier ones also experienced structural problems on the aft bulkhead and over-door-frame areas between saloon and cockpit. Also, during this period, the windows in the main saloon had a tendency to leak and, when they did, required rebedding or replacement. This was a costly job, so check this out carefully during survey.

Knysna 440

6. St. Francis 44/Knysna 440

If you wish to spend under $250,000, the older Saint Francis 44 and Knysna 440 are worth a look.

Back in 1990, Duncan Lethbridge started St. Francis Catamarans in South Africa with the St. Francis 43. The boat was meant to be a fast, strong bluewater voyager—and it was. The 43 was made with foam core, keeping the structure light, and it was very strongly built, with a powerful rig. The 43 loved to sail. And so too did the St. Francis 44, an updated version of the original.

The boat did have a couple of negatives, however, the first being its sloped windows that built up interior heat. And the boat wasn’t a great fit for tall people, having less than 6-foot-2-inch headroom in the hulls. Also, the engines were installed amidships, which made the boat noisy inside under power. It also made the amidships areas of the hulls too narrow to have centrally located heads and showers, which in turn meant the only layout available was a four-cabin, four-head design. In the forward cabins, the heads and showers had to be far forward; in the aft cabins, the heads and showers were located far aft.

St. Francis sold the tooling for the 44 to Knysna Yachts in 2004, and Knysna raised the headroom in the saloon and moved the engines aft to each stern. The hulls remained fundamentally the same, but the design was improved nicely.

The largest negative of both the Saint Francis 44 and the Knysna 440 is that they have very low underwing clearance. Things can get pretty noisy when pushing against washing-machine seas.

But you cannot have it all and still pay less than $250,000 in a midsize cat; compromises must be made. And these boats do sail quite smartly compared with many in their size range.

Lagoon 440 catamaran

7. Lagoon 440

This was the most popular catamaran ever made, and it started the catamaran flybridge craze, which helped to convert many powerboaters to sailors.

What I like about the 440 is that it is an infinitely better sailer than some of its peers, and has decent underwing clearance, vertical windows, and nice cabins for sleeping and living. While the aft cockpit is rather small, the saloon is quite large.

Flybridges are a bit of a love-hate thing. There is no question that in a cat of this size, the windward performance suffers a bit due to the boom positioned so high off the water. When piloting, the skipper is separated from those on the bridgedeck. Part of the reason flybridges are so popular in charter is that most of the parties take place up there while sailing and at anchor. In private ownership, however, it is seldom that everyone is hanging out on the flybridge during a long passage.

As always with Lagoons, these are balsa-cored boats, so a careful survey is in order. Pay attention also to bulkhead tabbing to make sure they have not separated from the hulls.

Because so many of the 440s were built to go into charter, there are a lot of four-cabin, four-head models for resale. These will sell for considerably less on the brokerage market than a coveted three-cabin, private-owner model.

Leopard 40 catamaran

8. Leopard 40

When you get into the 40-foot size range, a four-cabin layout can become pretty cramped and claustrophobic below, but the three-cabin owner version of the Leopard 40 is a very nice pocket cruiser. A Morrelli & Melvin design, the 40 has good underwing clearance and nicely shaped hulls. Not a large cat, per se, and less-suited for significant distance sailing than others because its payload is limited, the 40 is still well-suited for a couple and a child or two for near-coastal and island-hopping action.

Manta catamaran

9. Manta 42

If you are searching for a cat in the $200,000 range, the Manta 42s were well-built in Florida, and their electrical systems were very well-done compared with many other multihulls of that era. While many of the features on the boat are quite dated, these Mantas sail very well, and easily, and have been popular with coastal cruisers for two decades.

The largest negative of the Mantas is that people taller than 6 feet will find the saloon headroom right on the edge, and the berths are not especially large. Also, forward visibility from the saloon windows is not particularly panoramic, so the interiors are a bit darker inside than current-generation catamarans.

Lagoon catamaran

10. Lagoon 410

The Lagoon 410 was quite a popular cat in its prime, and for good reason. It offers lots of visibility thanks to its vertical windows, good headroom for a cat of its size, nice berths, and a workable, though smallish, galley-up design. The 410 has decent underwing clearance, can sail nicely over the waves, and its singlehanded operation is super easy. In the three-cabin owner’s configuration, it’s just a very cool little cat.

As always, a balsa-core boat must be surveyed carefully, especially on deck, for moisture incursion near fittings and hatches. It can be costly to repair rotted core and to rebed deck fittings. But find a dry one, and it should definitely be counted as a contender for a buyer with a limited budget.

Carnac Island Eco-Tour

  • Information

Important Information

Our unique sailing catamaran offers a luxurious, small group experience like no other.

Lying between Rottnest and Garden Islands, Carnac Island is an A-class Nature Reserve, teeming with wildlife (David Attenborough has even done a documentary on the wildlife here!).

Carnac Island is a leisurely 45 minute sail from Fremantle Boat Harbour through the sheltered waters of Cockburn Sound. It is an important haul out location for Australian Sea Lions and a myriad of sea birds as well as boasting spectacular diving, snorkelling and fishing.

A large sheltered bay on the eastern side of Carnac provides a safe haven from the southwest wind and swell – you just might have to share the beach with some playful juvenile Sea Lions!

Bottlenose Dolphins are also very common in the area and Capella is able to get closer than other boats without noisy motors scaring them off.

The clear, calm, shallow waters of Carnac island allow you to venture almost right up to the shore where you can step off into waist deep water to head off for a snorkel.

If the easterly is up, no worries! The western side of Carnac is an absolute delight with high limestone cliffs plunging into the water and a truly spectacular anchorage perfect for paddling the kayaks around.

Woman killed in horror Canary Islands shark attack while sailing on catamaran

The woman, a 30-year-old German national, is said to have had her leg bitten off by the shark as she was on a catamaran in international waters 278 miles south-west of Gran Canaria’s airport

A woman has died after being attacked by a shark on a catamaran as she was rushed to a hospital in the Canary Islands.

The 30-year-old German lost her fight for life in a Spanish Air Force helicopter as she was being evacuated to a Gran Canaria hospital.

She was officially pronounced dead after arriving at Doctor Negrin Hospital in the Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas yesterday night.

She is said to have had her leg bitten off by the shark as she was on a catamaran in international waters 278 miles south-west of Gran Canaria’s airport and around 110 miles east of the city of Dakhla in the disputed territory of Western Sahara which is currently occupied by Morocco.

The catamaran she was a crew member of has been named as British-flagged vessel Dalliance Chichester, which had left the Spanish holiday island on September 14.

Spanish Coastguards are said to have informed their Moroccan counterparts as well as UK coastguards because of the origin of the catamaran.

But according to local reports Moroccan authorities refused to transfer the injured woman to Rabat for emergency medical treatment. The unnamed woman was pronounced dead yesterday just after 11pm after going into cardiac arrest in the Spanish military chopper The shark attack is understood to have happened around 4pm the same day.

In June, shark sightings shuttered several Spanish resorts, with one forced to close just hours after local officials gave tourists the greenlight to return.

Lifeguards ordered bathers out of the water at Melenara Beach on Gran Canaria’s east coast after a police drone spotted a hammerhead shark off the beach.

The neighbouring Salinetas beach quickly followed, with Playa de San Agustín close behind, as lifeguards were seen hoisting a red flag at the spot just two hours later when a tourist photographed the tell-tale fin of a shark sticking out of the water. One of the shark appearances was reportedly spotted by a tourist near a restaurant overlooking the sea called Balcon de San Augustin. Red Cross officials later confirmed they had also seen it.
