Royal Denship 207

  • By Dudley Dawson
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

It is not uncommon for large yachts to be referred to as small ships, but the label is seldom as accurate as with Big Roi . I first glimpsed the 207-foot Royal Denship expedition yacht while savoring an alfresco lunch at the Eden Roc, high above the Med at Cap d’Antibes, France. Even in this storied venue, among scores of fabulous yachts old and new, Big Roi was a standout. As she proceeded around the point toward Cannes, her high blue bow and towering white superstructure signaled to the world that this was something different.

It would be another month before I saw Big Roi again, this time in Ft. Lauderdale, and had a chance to tour her at length with her captain, Grant Maughan. It is appropriate that Capt. Maughan is a veteran merchant mariner, for Big Roi is at least as much ship as she is yacht.

Big Roi ‘s shippy exterior gives way to an elegant interior. Impressive headroom and spaces allow for the use of full-size furniture, an uncommon luxury.

Big Roi has a steel displacement hull with a lengthy parallel midbody and round bilges. The yacht tops out at 17.6 knots, yielding a speed/length ratio of 1.30, near the top of the full-displacement regime. Forward, a modern bulb extends from the bow to reduce the bow wave and its resultant resistance. Aft, Big Roi ‘s buttock lines rise to terminate in a wide, shallow transom that prevents stern squat at speed.

She has no fin stabilizers to quell rolling. Rather, long bilge keels are fitted to the outside of the hull and a large Flume stabilizer spans her interior just forward of the engineroom. The Flume system is common on passenger ships but is seldom fitted on yachts because of the weight and volume required. It utilizes slack water tanks port and starboard, connected by a properly sized, or “tuned, transverse tunnel. Water sloshes from side to side, in response to and directly out of phase with the vessel’s rolling, to steady the yacht’s motion. The system is quiet and virtually maintenance-free, as no pumps or other moving parts are involved. The bilge keels and Flume tanks are effective at anchor as well as under way.

Fire safety is another area where Big Roi goes beyond the requirements of her Lloyd’s classification and MCA certification to approach commercial-grade construction. Many of the main bulkheads are A-60 rated, which means they will prevent the passage of smoke, flame and temperature rise from one compartment to another for 60 minutes. While the bulkheads are veneered with finely finished and detailed mahogany, they are cored with panels prefabricated of steel facings and mineral wool insulation. Fire doors, also A-60 rated, are fitted with self-closing mechanisms.

There are multiple escape routes from all compartments. Several fire lockers, complete with firefighting gear, are located throughout the yacht, as are fire detectors and alarms. There is also a fog-type sprinkler system to protect all accommodation spaces.

Equipment and outfitting are also to commercial standards. At the bow, windlasses and capstans are rugged, no-nonsense installations that emphasize functionality. Aft, a stern anchor is fitted in a pocket, out of the way but ready when needed. Tenders and other ancillary equipment are on the well deck amidships. The tender cradles, however, are locked into standardized cargo fittings spaced to accommodate commercial shipping containers. A 12-ton crane with a 37-foot reach facilitates equipment changes as well as tender launching.

The engineroom is fully two decks high. The main engines, Caterpillar 3512B diesels turning a commercial-rated 1600 rpm, are nestled low in the hull, allowing shaft lines with zero inclination and keeping the propellers above keel level. Two 170kW Caterpillar generators are here, as well. A third, equally sized unit is in the fo’c’sle. This generator not only provides a full emergency backup, but is fitted with a dry-stack vertical exhaust for regular use when moored stern-to in a crowded harbor.

Many yachts have a tool chest in the engineroom, and a few even have a compact workbench in an adjacent space, but I have never seen as large or well-equipped an onboard workshop as that aboard Big Roi . In addition to such metalworking machinery as welders, lathes and drill presses, the large compartment carries a full store of maintenance supplies and critical spare parts, for repairs while under way. Having worked in the engineroom of a merchant ship, I can attest to the value of such a facility aboard an expedition yacht intended for tramping to remote corners of the globe.

The problem with some shippy yachts is that they are more ship than yacht. Big Roi proves owners can have both. As much as her rugged construction and outfitting appeal to the techie in me, her elegant interior will satisfy the most demanding yachtsman.

Raised-panel mahogany, finished dark, is the predominant theme for bulkheading, but lighter burls are used as accents throughout. White lacquered overheads and light carpeting keep the lower-deck guest accommodations from feeling gloomy, while large windows flood the main and upper decks with sunshine.

Interior designers are quite clever about disguising the fact that many yachts have furniture a little smaller than normal, to conform to the restricted dimensions of the rooms. Everything appears to be in proportion until you try to get comfortable in a narrow chair or stretch out on a short sofa. That’s not a problem aboard Big Roi . Her big headroom and big spaces allow the use of full-size freestanding furniture throughout. All staterooms have king berths, and the dining tables, inside and out, have chairs for the full complement of 12 guests.

From the moment guests step aboard, they will feel welcome aboard Big Roi , and it doesn’t matter how they arrive. If the yacht is docked alongside, guests will board through the starboard door amidships into a full-beam, main deck reception foyer that includes a bar and adjoining sitting room. It is a great place to unwind while the crew takes care of luggage and prepares the staterooms. Should guests approach from the stern, either from a low quay or a launch, they will transfer across the teak swim platform to a nicely appointed guest foyer and an elevator that leads to the main deck and reception area.

Steps lead down to the guest accommodations, and a second elevator goes up to the owner’s deck, pilothouse deck and flying bridge deck. Belowdecks are four guest staterooms, two with tubs and two with showers in marble heads. All staterooms have vanities, desks, settees and king berths. Two VIP guests share a full-beam suite that could easily be the owner’s on other yachts, with a king berth and spacious sitting area. Each VIP guest room has a large walk-in hanging locker and separate bath, his with a shower and hers with a bidet and oversize whirlpool tub.

As spacious as the VIP suite is, it can’t begin to rival the owner’s quarters, which fill an entire deck two levels above. An intricate pattern of stairs, doorways and anterooms allow most of the deck to be closed for privacy or opened to share with guests. In addition to the owner’s stateroom, similar in size and outfit to the VIP cabin, there is an office/library, owner’s saloon, covered afterdeck, forward seating and reception lobby with day head.

Above the owner’s deck is the pilothouse deck, which includes the captain’s cabin and office. The top deck has a bar, a day head, guest seating, sunpads and a large whirlpool forward. Aft is a helicopter pad. An elevator and central stair tower serve all four superstructure decks, including the flying bridge deck.

Crew quarters, including three double cabins, a mess, a lounge and a galley, are forward, both belowdecks and in the fo’c’sle. A fourth crew cabin, convertible to a gymnasium, is on the tank level below the main crew quarters. The engineer has a cabin aft, between the engineroom and lazarette.

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Koru,’ Jeff Bezos’s Bonkers 410-Foot Sailing Superyacht

Superyacht Koru Jeff Bezos

According to the latest Forbes ‘s Real-Time Billionaires List, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is currently worth around $204 billion, making him the second-wealthiest person on the planet, just behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk .

So handing over an estimated $500 million for his 410-foot Koru , the world’s largest sailing yacht , another $75 million for Abeona , its 250-foot support vessel, and then paying the $30 million or so a year to cover running costs for both, should be well within his budget.

Bezos surprised the boating world when he opted for a classically styled, three-masted sailing yacht instead of some flashy mega motoryacht. What’s more it has a buxom wooden sculpture on the forepeak, typical of 19th-century sailing vessels. And since taking delivery last year, he and his fiancé, Lauren Sánchez, have been using the yacht to cruise the world in style.

While secrecy still shrouds Koru , especially its interior and many of its technical features, we take a closer look at what makes it, arguably, the most interesting sailing superyacht in years.

Designed as a Modern Classic

big roi yacht

Koru would never be described as sleek, or elegant even. But she does have a classical style. Designed by the Dutch masters at Dykstra Naval Architecture, the boat is distinguished by its towering navy-blue steel hull, snowy-white, two-level aluminum superstructure, sweeping canoe stern, and a trio of soaring masts. Her design inspiration is said to be the triple-masted schooner Eos , built by Germany’s Lürssen Yachts in 2006 for American media mogul Barry Diller. And, ignoring the current trend of oversized windows, Koru ‘s hull sides are dotted with traditional portholes with smaller-than typical windows for the upper decks (no doubt helping to protect guests from paparazzi lenses). Little is known about the yacht’s interior design, other than it’s the work of London-based Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi studio. Oceanco’s website describes the interior as a “timeless, contemporary style, with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals and beautifully patterned textiles.”

Claiming the Prize for Size

big roi yacht

At 410 feet bow to stern and with a beam of 56 feet, Koru is the largest sailing yacht in the world. Some might argue the title should go to the 468-foot Sailing Yacht A . But that quirky, Philippe Stark–designed triple-master is considered a “sail-assisted motoryacht” rather than a true sailing yacht. Koru is also big inside, with a reported internal volume of 3,300 gross T=tons, that offers room for up to 18 guests in nine cabins and accommodations for a crew of 36.

A True Sailor

big roi yacht

Full credit to Jeff Bezos for ignoring his fellow billionaires’ penchant for giant, diesel-guzzling superyachts. (Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently took delivery of his 387-foot Launchpad , powered by quadruple MTU engines packing a combined 23,400 hp.) With its giant, more-than-20,000-square-foot sail plan (including three mainsails and three, cutter-style headsails), Koru has been regularly photographed cruising under sail. It’s also believed the yacht is making an effort to focus on sustainability, from reports of it testing out a prototype kinetic energy recovery system that converts wave-induced motion into electrical energy. The vessel is also believed to feature a hybrid power system with large battery banks that run its systems at night while at anchor.

Its 250-Foot, $75 Million “Tender”

big roi yacht

The challenge with sailing yachts, even one that’s 410 feet long, is that it’s nearly impossible to land a helicopter on the deck. So Bezos commissioned a 250-foot support vessel, named Abeona after the Roman goddess of travelers. The largest shadow vessel ever built by Holland’s Damen Yachting, this explorer comes with a rear-deck helipad and hangar big enough to accommodate an Airbus ACH-135 helicopter. There’s also space aboard for a small armada of water toys and tenders, plus accommodations below decks for up to 45 crew and support staff.

Built Under Total Secrecy

big roi yacht

Tasked with taking Koru from concept to reality was the superyacht builder Oceanco, based south of Rotterdam in Alblasserdam, Holland. The famed yard, owned by billionaire Mohammed Al Barwani, who also owns Turquoise Yachts in Turkey, recently completed Steven Spielberg’s new 357-foot superyacht Seven Sea s, and the similar-sized Bravo Eugenia , launched in 2018 for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Koru was reportedly first commissioned in 2018 as Project Y721 and delivered to the Amazon founder in Gibraltar in April 2023.

What’s in a Name?

big roi yacht

While a betting person might have predicted that Bezos would have given his sailing yacht a more Amazon-connected name, like Prime, Deliverance, or even Blue Origin after his space company, he picked Koru . The name is said to be Maori for “loop” or “coil” and resembles the spiral shape of an unfurling silver fern frond. It’s said to be an integral symbol of New Zealand Maori art that symbolizes new life and new beginnings. Look closely at the wooden figurehead on Koru ‘s bow and the necklace around the woman’s neck features a pendant shaped like the koru symbol.

A Bridge Too Far

big roi yacht

As Koru was nearing completion in 2021, word got out that builder Oceanco had approached the city of Rotterdam in Holland, offering to pay for the partial disassembly of the historic 97-year-old Koningshaven lift-bridge, which was too low for the yacht with its triple 230-foot masts in place, to pass under on its way to the North Sea. The city reportedly consented, but the move resulted in a huge public outcry with threats to plaster Koru with eggs as it passed through the bridge. Oceanco withdrew its application and instead towed the yacht to Rotterdam’s Greenport shipyard west of the city, transported the masts by barge, and installed them there.

The Places You’ll Go

big roi yacht

Hot on the heels of Koru ‘s handover in Gibraltar in April last year, the superyacht has seemingly been cruising non-stop. It was spotted exploring Spain’s Balearic Islands, anchored off Cannes during the film festival, and moored at celebrity hot spots like Saint-Tropez, Capri, Portofino, and Porto Cervo, Sardinia. Bezos reportedly proposed to Sánchez on the bow of Koru off Cannes in May last year, followed by an engagement party aboard in Positano, Italy with a guest list that included Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kris Jenner, Toby Maguire, and Queen Rania of Jordan. Then Koru cruised the 4,000-plus miles across the Atlantic to Fort Lauderdale for a re-fuel and re-supply before heading to the Caribbean for winter cruising. This summer it was back to the Mediterranean for more island-hopping.

Force Blue explorer yacht for sale

€4.7M price drop on 71m Royal Denship superyacht Force Blue

A €4,700,000 price drop has been announced on the 70.6-metre Royal Denship motor yacht Force Blue, listed for sale with Fraser and Burgess .

Force Blue first hit the water in 2002 as the 63.3-metre Big Roi, designed as a trawler-style expedition yacht, and has been refitted to varying degrees throughout her life.

Her most recent refit, completed in 2022, was carried out at Lusben and sought to maintain her explorer characteristics but tone down her workboat looks. Much of the work centred around a seven-metre stern extension to allow for a large wrap-around swim platform. The main deck was extended in the process as well.

Guests arriving are greeted by a large main saloon with a separate dining room that doubles as a conference space. Accommodation is for 12 guests across six cabins with the master suite positioned on a dedicated owner's deck with three separate seating areas and a private terrace. An elevator serves all decks.

H2 Yacht Design handled the exterior redesign while Italian architect Michele Bonan conceived her new interior.

Other highlights of this explorer yacht for sale include a black-tiled spa, massage room and a heated table used for certain treatments, a cinema and a large bridge deck bar, BBQ and dining area that converts into a disco.

Large toys and tenders are stored in the bow and she currently carries an 8.8-metre Pascoe tender, a 9.5-metre NorthStar tender, and an 8.5-metre Bat tender.

Power comes from a pair of Caterpillar engines delivering a range of 8,000 nautical miles at 14 knots and 11,400 nautical miles at 10 knots.  She is RINA class and MCA compliant with a strong charter record.

Force Blue is now asking €24,800,000 with VAT paid.

$250M superyacht Liva O draws 'big' attention on Seattle's Lake Union

SEATTLE - The superyacht LIVA O, owned by billionaire Stephen Orenstein , has made a notable appearance on Seattle's Lake Union .

Measuring 387 feet, LIVA O is the largest superyacht ever built by the esteemed German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen . For comparison, a Washington state Olympic Class ferry measures 362 feet.

Launched as the shipyard's latest masterpiece, LIVA O represents a significant achievement for Abeking & Rasmussen, which has been in operation for over 115 years. "We have once again succeeded in building an exceptional yacht," said Matthias Hellmann, CEO at Abeking & Rasmussen. "By upholding our values of innovation, quality, and client satisfaction, we have created a yacht that sets new industry standards."

Designed by Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris, the yacht features a sleek black hull and offers luxurious amenities, including a Neptune Lounge with an underwater view, a swimming pool, a helicopter pad and a crow’s nest. The vessel also employs a diesel-electric propulsion system for quiet navigation and maneuvering.

So how much does a yacht of this size cost? According to Superyacht Fan , Orenstein bought the yacht in 2023 for $250 million and estimates its annual running cost to be $15 to $25 million.

According to Forbes , Stephen Orenstein is a German-American business executive with extensive commercial real estate holdings in Germany, Italy, the U.K. and the U.S., and holds a stake in the German soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt.

Formerly owning 75% of Supreme Group, a logistics firm that supplied food and water to the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, Orenstein took over the company in 1985 after his father's death.

Forbes estimates his net worth at $2 billion.

The yacht's presence in Lake Union is drawing attention from locals and yacht enthusiasts alike, marking a significant milestone in Seattle's maritime scene.

The Neriedes boat Thetis that interests me is a Ice Class yacht. What does that mean exactly and what does it all this yacht to do over any other without that classification? It isn't a ice breaker correct? Would it allow me to go up say into the wilds of Alaska, North or South pole regions that are navigable? Greenland? How much Ice in volume of water can this yacht pass thru? Please explain!

Do you have a URL for this? I did an internet search on "Neriedes" and came up blank! Kelly Cook

Ice Class means nothing in itself. There are at least nine different classification organizations and they use 3-5 classes, where the lightest is almost no ice-going at all and the highest is like icebreakers. It has to do with many things, but mainly strength of hull, engine performance and propellers. For icebreaking you should not really have a bulbous bow or stabilizers, but there are retractable or removable stabilizers if you know that you will need this. If you post the ice-class on this boat, I can have a look what it corresponds to. The Polara Explorer you see here is made with a bow that can take certain ice, but for heavier ice the stabilizers has to be removed in advance. There exist also certain ice eating propellers, screwlike but very few pleasure boats have them or the real Ice classification. Many boats have no classifications at all but are built to class nevertheless. It has mainly to do with the regular controls that has to be made to keep them in class which owners don´t care to pay for or to take the hassle.

Attached Files:

http://www.nereidsyachts.com/ I have the specs at home will look up the class listed, perhaps it is also listed at thier website I haven't checked.
Alright, it says Class ID, which is just OK for very light ice conditions. The same as if you have no ice class really... The most common Ice Class codes are; IAA or IA Super for extreme ice IA for severe ice IB for average ice IC for light ice (ID) or II for very light ice A real offshore Ice Breaker looks like this Swedish built Oden. The props are protected and they have ballast tanks to change the center of gravity to break ice by moving the bow up and down over the ice. They are also used for scientific cruises to the polar areas in the summer. Right now they are near the North Pole together with the American icebreaker Healy. Built at Götaverken, Sweden, launched in 1987. Length 107.69 m Beam 31.2 m Draught 7-8.5 m 24.500 Hp diesels Bunker 4.000.000 litres!! The steel in the bow is 56 mm, just over two inches thick...
Humm, is this Nereids a poor photo, or a terrific rendering? http://65.249.65.166/media//yacht_images/39621/83_3_40_08_PM004.tif.jpg Kelly

My guess would be a badly exposed pic that was subsequently badly retouched.
I agree with Kevin, a strange picture but why try to impose a rendering towards that background? Must be a photo with some afterjob done to it...

Kelly, Where did you find that picture and are thier others with it? I have limited amount of photos of this yacht supplied by the listing agent, I was hoping to see more of it underway from different angles. I have a few photos of the interior now that it is done as well.

Excuse my ignorance, but it that how they lauch boats? Surely there is a more simply, less risky way. I have seen the usual, slipway mehtod, but that its just nuts.

Thetis is on the Monaco Yacht Show Ladys Choice, i saw the listing from Monaco yacht Show and Thetis will be there. If you like i will make some pictures and will visit the boat to inspect. I will stay in Monaco from the 20 -25 of September. If someone wants to meet please contact me via GSM: 00491711457121 Alex
Yes I would love as many exterior and interior pictures you are able to take, I am in contact with both the captain and owner of Thetis, I am expecting a CD of photo's any day now but of course new ones are always appreciated! Thanks! I am also curious to see it in a size perspective against other yachts and as much of the exterior decking/layout etc.. Will it be difficult for you to gain access? Perhaps I should ask the captain/owner to allow you in for my behalf of photos? Would you be interested in doing that? SO that I can get pictures of the galley, engine room, crew's quarters and of course the main areas and cabins as well. Having not seen the CD of photo's yet I am unsure what is there or what I will be lacking if anything to see. Let me know if you would like to meet those involved with Thetis and I can inquire on getting you access while you are there for helping me! Many Thanks,
Thetis Ok no Problem. Please advise the Captain or Owner that i will come on board to make some pictures for you and that my project manager is allowed to look behind the curtains to check the building quality.

Yes, it is not unusual that ships have a bulb and high Ice Class, but yachts in the 50 meter range will simply be too shallow and the bulb will hit the ice. Octopus is more of a ship if you compare to other pleasure yachts...

Would it be possible to have an ice classed yacht built out of aluminium? Perheaps a 1B to 1A class on the scale above. The Ol' grey matter became stimulated after reading the info on aluminium on the Trekker Yachts web site.
Possibly if the boat design were such that it would ride up on the ice. Instead of plow through it. But for a deep full displacement design I would stick with steel. Kelly
