What is the American Power Boat Association (APBA)?

The American Power Boat Association (APBA) is a governing body for power boat racing in the United States. The APBA is the oldest racing organization in the United States and in 2003 APBA celebrated its 100-year anniversary. With more than 5,000 racing members, the APBA sanctions over 200 events each year for just about any motorized watercraft imaginable from Unlimited Hydroplanes to rough riding Offshore boats, to Personal Watercraft. The APBA organizes and assists regional racing promoters in the United States, and regulates a variety of personal watercraft racing competitions. These competitions include the popular Watercross, which is also referred to as Closed Course racing, Freestyle, Slalom events, along with the emerging Endurance and Offshore racing. The APBA is an International affiliate of the International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) representing the United States. The APBA Personal Watercraft Racing (PWR) program was created to help racers, manufacturers and sponsors benefit form the rapidly expanding sport of watercraft racing.

What happened to the International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA)?

The IJSBA is still around, but the role of the IJSBA has changed from being both an International sanctioning body and membership organization in the United States, to just being an International racing organization. The IJSBA organizes and assists its International affiliates (like the APBA) and produces a rulebook for all of its International affiliates to follow. The IJSBA also produces the World Finals. For more information on the IJSBA visit www.IJSBA.com.

Do I have to be an APBA member in order to race?

In order to race in an APBA sanctioned event you need to be a competition member or you can sign up ONCE for a single-event competition membership.

Do I have to be an IJSBA member in order to race?

No, you only have to be an APBA member.

I've decided to become an APBA member, how do I sign up?

There are three ways to join the APBA. 1. On-line registration through this website . 2. Download a membership application on this web site and mail it to APBA. 3. Sign up with your regional promoter at the races.

What does the APBA Competition Membership include?

You can race in APBA sanctioned events all over the United States in the following watercraft racing categories: Watercross, Slalom, Freestyle, Endurance and Offshore. There are 3 levels of competition, which include Regional and National events, as well as the World Finals.

What are the different classes I can race in?

New racers can race in the Novice and/or Beginner classes. The APBA separates the riders into classes based on the type of watercraft you own (i.e. Ski, Runabout) and the Modifications (i.e. Stock, Limited, Superstock). The Beginner classer are usually an open class. Check with your local promoter to see what classes he/she offers.

How do I enter a race?

The first thing you need to do is find who the race promoter in your area is and decide which event you want to attend. Once you've selected the racing events you want to attend, you can get the appropriate racing forms from your local promoter or their Web site. Please keep in mind that each event has a specific deadline for registration and there may be penalties or additional fees for late registration.

What kind of safety gear do I need and where do I get it?

Safety is a critical part of racing and should be taken very seriously. Helmets, goggles, footwear, wetsuits, gloves are some of the equipment necessary. All of this equipment is available at your local watercraft dealer.

What about numbers for my boat and what number can I run?

The APBA and the IJSBA requires a specific size and color of backgrounds to race depending on skill level. Numbers and backgrounds are available for sale at most of the races. Clear, legible numbers are very important. Remember, if the numbers cannot be read while the watercraft is moving, the rider stand a good chance of not being scored properly. It is the responsibility of the rider to have the proper size and color numbers and backgrounds. See the rulebook for the correct size background and number.

What are the rules and where do I get them?

The APBA is an International affiliate of the IJSBA and the events are run by the IJSBA rulebook. APBA members will receive an IJSBA Competition rulebook as part of their membership. You may also go to the IJSBA Web site (www.ijsba.com) and view the entire rulebook for a quick reference. Because new rules are implemented during the course of the year it's important to check the APBA and IJSBA Web sites for rule updates. It is the racers responsibility to check this before competing!

Tue jan 09 2024, powerboat p1 unveils 2024 p1 offshore and class 1 race calendar.

  • P1 race events to be part of the APBA national championship
  • New end of season dates for Sarasota and St. Pete grand prix
  • Mercury Racing event to return to Sheboygan after 2023 success

We love all forms of racing at Monster Energy and entering the UIM Class 1 World Championship and APBA National Championship, as well as the P1 AquaX National Championship, in 2023 genuinely thrilled us with the sport’s amazing and vibrant mix of racing, competition and amazing fan attention, interaction and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to title sponsor the final round of the national championship. Dave Gowland Monster Energy

Powerboat P1 has today announced its P1 Offshore race calendar for the 2024 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin again and returning to favorite venues in Florida. The Sarasota and St. Petersburg grand prix events on Florida’s Gulf Coast move away from their traditional dates around the Independence Day and Labor Day vacations respectively and will provide an exhilarating climax to the season in September and October.

Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast will again host the season opener in mid-May with a weekend of ‘fast boats and cold drinks.’ Thunder On Cocoa Beach will be celebrating its 15th anniversary of staging this event and its Executive Director, Kerry Bartlett will be unveiling special plans to mark this milestone.

In August, racing will return to Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan for a second year. Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone reported that last season’s inaugural Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge delivered an economic impact of $4.7 million with more than 40,000 attending the three-day festival, and this year’s event in August will be open to all offshore classes. Mayor Ryan Sorenson said: “I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our City’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.” City Administrator Casey Bradley added: “This event not only brings a surge of energy to our City but also underscores our commitment to hosting world class events. We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”

Another event milestone will be celebrated in September with the 40th anniversary of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, making it the second longest-running powerboat festival in the United States. For decades the racing has been a unique, prestigious event that brings significant value to the county. Local media reports that it generates millions of dollars in economic impact every year with up to 16,000 room nights, and P1’s national and international television deals showcase the city’s many attractions to an audience of more than 200 million homes. Pete Harvey, Director of Sports at Visit Sarasota County commented: “The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”

Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 Class 1 boats by 2025. We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners. Azam Rangoonwala Powerboat P1, CEO

The season finale will see the race teams head along the Gulf Coast to St. Petersburg for the Monster Energy St. Pete Grand Prix. Now in its fourth year, the event has quickly become a favorite venue will the racers and it will see the APBA national champions crowned in October. “We’re excited to see one of America’s best waterfront locations selected to host the Powerboat P1 grand prix event,” commented Visit St. Pete/Clearwater President/CEO Brian Lowack. “We love the opportunity to show off the spectacular downtown St. Pete waterfront and award-winning St. Pete Pier as spectators come from near and far to our beautiful destination or tune in on TV around the globe to see some of the most exciting action on water.”

Dave Gowland of Monster Energy said: “We love all forms of racing at Monster Energy and entering the UIM Class 1 World Championship and APBA National Championship, as well as the P1 AquaX National Championship, in 2023 genuinely thrilled us with the sport’s amazing and vibrant mix of racing, competition and amazing fan attention, interaction and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to title sponsor the final round of the national championship.”

Seven teams are expected to compete in this season’s UIM Class 1 World Championship and races will be staged at the P1 Offshore events. Powerboat P1’s aim is to attract more teams and build the worldwide television audience to return Class 1 to the summit of the sport. “Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 boats by 2025” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners.”

“The 2023 offshore season was one of great change and growth” explains Rangoonwala. “This season we will seek further growth by focusing on attracting more competitors, particularly young racers, improving the fan experience, continuing to build our social media audience and broadening the international reach of our TV broadcast deals. Having celebrated our 20th anniversary last year, Powerboat P1 is embarking on its third decade as a promoter and we will continue to design our race events to encourage tourism and enhance the profile of the host venues. Partnerships are at the heart of our business and over the coming months we will be announcing new agreements as well as the renewal of existing sponsorships.”

 Idaho's Premier Boat Race

JUNE 27-30, 2024 The Idaho Regatta is an annual boat race that takes place on the Snake River located in

Burley, Idaho. The race is held on the "LAST FULL" weekend in June approximately the 24-27. The event hosts some of the fastest Circle Sprint Boats from across the United States. We generally host 10 classes of boats that include; K Racing Runabouts, Un-blown Flats,

Cracker Boxes, Sportsman Extreme, Competition Jet, Grand National Endurance, GPS 100, 2.5 Liter Hydroplanes, 1 Liter Hydroplanes, and A-Stock/Junior Hydroplanes. The race course is an approximate 1.25 mile course set up on the beautiful Snake River. They race around a buoyed course that has an island in the center of the race course. You can see the boats go behind the island, but you don't know what happens on the back straightaway. This adds to the excitement because you never know which boat will come from behind the island in the LEAD. The facility that the event is hosted at is the wonderful  Rivers Edge Golf Course Marina/Park. There is plenty of area for spectators to view the event from the front straightaway.  Spectators watch the boats make four laps around the 1.25 mile course racing for trophies and prizes. The event also sports food vendors and some swag vendors for your enjoyment. We sell event T-shirts to commemorate your experience at the Idaho Regatta. Some of our Race Teams also sell shirts so that you can get one from your favorite driver/boat. Come join us for the Northwest's Fastest and most Prestigious Flatbottom Boat Race on the
