Anchor Chain & Anchor Shackles
Whether you are anchoring for a quick swim or staying for the night, make sure your vessel has the right anchoring supplies to get the job done. Wholesale Marine carries an extensive line of chains and shackles from Sea Dog , Lewmar , Greenfield , Whitecap , and more.
Anchor chain is used in combination with anchor line, shackles, and swivels to ensure safe anchoring. The chain helps keep the anchor in the correct setting position for a stronger hold. It also helps prevent chafing and abrasion, which can occur when rope is attached directly to the anchor.
Anchor Supplies for Every Vessel
Anchor chains come in a variety of materials, sizes, and lengths for various anchoring situations. Greenfield offers PVC-coated Anchor chain in a variety of colors. The specially formulated PVC coating allows the chain to bend and coil easily.
Whitecap’s Stainless Steel Anchor Chain is a durable, corrosion-resistant option for saltwater boaters. It is constructed of 316 stainless steel and is available in a variety of sizes.
Anchor shackles and swivels are essential for connecting your chain to your anchor and line. Screw pin shackles are available in stainless or galvanized steel. Anchor swivels are an alternative to shackles that allow rotation to prevent your line and chain from snagging and getting twisted up.
Purchasing the right anchoring supplies with enough strength and durability is essential. Regularly inspecting this equipment can help avoid costly repairs from anchors breaking or not holding your vessel.

Team Jimmy Green has put together a range of load-rated shackles suitable for connecting your anchor to your anchor chain.
How to select your anchor to chain shackles:
- Select comparable break loads for each component of your anchor rode or anchoring system
- Select hot-dipped galvanised or marine-grade stainless steel shackles for anchoring applications.
- Galvanised are less expensive and avoid any issue with dissimilar metals when connecting galvanised chains and anchors
- Select rated shackles for anchoring – check the load rating for compatibility with the chain and rope
- Avoid commercial pattern non-rated shackles for anchoring – if there is no provenance regarding their origin, there is no way of telling how weak they may be.
- Jimmy Green Galvanised Pin Shackles - genuine original green pin shackles, but with the pins hot-dip galvanised by Jimmy Green
Stainless Steel in contact with Galvanised Steel
Jimmy Green Marine stock anchoring shackles with a guaranteed manufacturer break load – test certificates are available for added reassurance – file them in the ship’s papers for future reference.
Shackles can be used to join an anchor warp to an anchor chain and to connect the end link of an anchor chain to the anchor.
Anchor Connections
Anchoring shackles can be used to attach the anchor to the end of the chain – two shackles back to back is the tried and trusted method.
Back to Back refers to the crown of each shackle bearing against one another, resulting in both the pins taking the load correctly, one in the hole/slot on the anchor shank, the other in the end link of the chain. A one-shackle solution may appear a simpler and cheaper method, but it could lead to disastrous results: The connecting hole or slot in the anchor shank is quite commonly a straight cut through the metal resulting in a hard right-angle edge. Passing the lug of a shackle through the slot and turning it to create a one-shackle connection with the pin through the end link of the chain may be possible. However, this will mean that the inside of the curved crown on the shackle will bear against the hard right-angle edges of the shank. This will adversely affect the strength of the connection and cause damage to the galvanising. Some anchors may have a bevelled, chamfered or filleted (rounded) edge around the shank slot/hole. However, the crown of a shackle will still only bear on the two machined edges, which will not optimise the spreading of the load. It is good practice to orientate all your connections, particularly metal to metal so that the two bearing edges are arranged to take the load in the best load-bearing manner.
Some anchor connectors require the addition of an anchor shackle to facilitate articulation - the photos below show examples of both good and not-so-good practices.
N.B. It is advisable to fit a suitable bow shackle between the anchor shank and the connector to reduce lateral load risk. Unless an anchor connector is specifically designed to withstand lateral loads, it must be able to articulate to align with the direction of the pull. One solution is to fit a shackle/ Maillon Rapide/ fixed connector to the anchor shank and attach this to 3 links of anchor chain, which is joined to the anchor connector on the larger pin end. You will generally need the links to be one size larger than your anchor chain.
The curved crown of the shackle will bear the load unevenly in this relatively harsh anchor slot.
The curved crown of the shackle will take the load better on a rounded anchor slot. However, this anchor shank is relatively thin compared with the shackle, which may cause load problems.
This anchor has a harsh, right-angle edge to the slot, but the shackle is correctly aligned so that the load is spread along the length of the pin. The next connection should provide articulation.
This anchor connection is quite long, but it is designed to swivel and twist so that the anchor comes up over the stem head in the right orientation. The shackle is aligned, so the pin takes the load on the relatively harsh anchor slot. The shackle has a socket pin head to prevent snagging as it passes over the bow roller. The banana-shaped connector is from Osculati and provides the twist facility. There is also a swivel connection between the chain and the Twist Connector, presumably fitted to help in this respect.
Modern anchors are not normally supplied with this feature. The tried and trusted CQR has a large shackle with a welded pin to facilitate a variety of options for connecting to the anchor chain. In this example, rotation is provided by the anchor connector and articulation by the extra shackle. The load-bearing point between the two shackles will slip from side to side on the straight pin, but not a great deal because of the oversize nature of the CQR fitted shackle. The orientation of the second shackle optimises the load bearing between its curved crown and the pin on the anchor connector.

Anchor Chain and Shackles
Choosing the right shackle for your anchor rode..
Ive been studying your recent articles on chain and galvanizing (see PS June 2014 and January 2015 online ), as I am about to replace the anchor chain on my catamaran. When it to comes to the shackles, I am confused.
If I use 3/8-inch Acco G43 proof-coil chain, why is the same-size galvanized shackle so much weaker? West Marine shows the Acco G43 chain rated at 5,400 pounds maximum working load (MWL), but the similarly sized shackle is rated at only 2,000 pounds MWL. It seems as though whatever size chain I select, the shackle is the weak link. How can I use a larger shackle on smaller chain?
Steve Wann Tonic, Catana 431 Virginia
Comparing specifications between two different types of products can get confusing. Part of the problem here is the data youre comparing. The products working load limits (WLL) and MWL are derived from the safety factors used in their manufacture. Because chain and shackles are made using different safety factors, their maximum working loads arent directly comparable.
Shackle specifications use safety factors ranging from 6:1 to 4.5:1 (depending on maker and size); however, the factors are degraded by 50 percent if the shackle is loaded at a 90-degree angle. G43 chain is made using a 3:1 safety factor; there is no variation for angle of pull.
Because of these very different safety factors, they seem very far apart in terms of strength, but if you compare their minimum breaking strength (MBS), the shackle is nearly as strong as the chain. The minimum breaking strength of 3/8-inch G43 chain is 16,200 pounds (3:1 safety factor). The minimum breaking strength of 3/8-inch Peerless and Campbell shackles are 24,000 pounds or 12,000 pounds (6:1 safety factor) at a 90-degree load, depending on the shackle grade (see below) and size. Crosby shackles, which work to a 4.5:1safety factor, have an MBS of 18,000 pounds to 9,000 pounds.
Shackles are graded according to strength: More common Grade A (3/8-inch) shackles have a WLL of approximately 1 ton, and Grade B shackles have a WLL of approximately 2 tons. (WLL varies by size.) Makers distinguish their shackle grades by coloring the pins: For example, the Crosby uses silver; Peerless (Peer-Lift line) uses blue pin; and Campbell uses orange.
If you use the 3/8-inch Acco G43 chain, we highly recommend going with a Grade B bow shackle one size up. The Peer-Lift Grade B 7/16-inch shackle should fit the hole in 3/8-inch chain and has an MBS of 32,000 pounds, almost double that of the chain (16,200 pounds). This means the shackle and chain will have similar strengths in worst-case scenarios (i.e. side loading the shackle), but in most situations, the shackle will be twice as strong as the chain. If you want overkill, the half-inch shackle likely will fit the chain also.
Always use a galvanized, rated bow shackle for the anchor rode. (Bow shackles articulate better.) Rated shackles have the WLL stamped on their body, along with the country of origin, a code indicating when the shackles were made and by whom, and their size (i.e. 3/8 inches). These shackles are batch tested for failure, and most-at least those made in Europe and the U.S.-are also proof tested (tested to twice the WLL). No stamped rating means theres no way to know whether it was tested or what its WLL should be. Trusting ground tackle to a shackle with unknown pedigree is asking for problems.
Crosby ( www.thecrosbygroup.com ), Peerless ( www.peerlesschian.com ), and Campbell ( www.campbellchainandfittings.com ) are the most easily accessible shackle brands in the U.S. All offer galvanized, rated bow shackles. Youll find these brands atmost chandlers or local lifting-gear specialists that sell lifting cables, chain, and fittings.
In addition to strength compatibility, youll need to check that all ground-tackle components physically match; this includes the windlass gypsy. Shackle and chain dimensions can vary from maker to maker, so it is essential to check. Cut off a link of your chain, and take it with you when shackle shopping; take the windlass gypsy along when chain shopping; or buy the whole lot at the same time from the same place.

Three methods for seizing shackles
- Chris Beeson
- October 20, 2017
Shackles are often under high load. If one shakes open, the result could be dangerous. Chris Beeson shows how to make sure it won’t
This spinnaker block shackle somehow managed to hang on by jamming itself in place, but it wouldn’t endure actual use Credit: Graham Snook/YM
RYA Yachtmaster Chris Beeson has raced and cruised over 40,000 ocean miles in his 37 years as a sailor
I used to be doubtful about the necessity of seizing shackles. Nip the pin up tight with a shackle key or pliers and how can it possibly come loose? My mind was changed in 2011, while checking the rig of the old Jeanneau we used in our Crash Test Boat series. This was the rather concerning sight we found at the masthead.
The spinnaker block shackle’s pin had shaken itself free. Had we hoisted and flown an offwind sail, it would have draped itself expensively over the bow, possibly tearing itself in the process, as soon as the halyard chafed through on its mast exit.
What if a shackle securing a cruising chute sheet turning block rattled itself loose? You would have all the load in the sheet firing a block across the cockpit with potentially lethal consequences.
The problem is that boats are subject to a lot of vibration. Wind through the rigging creates vibration, current across an anchor chain creates vibration, engines cause vibration, so does sailing into waves. Shackle pins will work themselves free and problems will result. To prevent them doing so, we seize them.
We use one of three methods of seizing, or securing, the pin to ensure that it simply can’t loosen. One is using threadlock, which glues the pin in place but not with ‘super-glue’ adhesion so it can still be undone with standard tools.
A second method is using electrical cable ties, though it is worth remembering that these are subject to UV degradation and probably won’t last more than a season if they’re always out in the sun. The third method, the gold standard method of seizing shackles, is to use Monel wire. That isn’t subject to UV degradation and has excellent corrosion resistance properties.
Seizing with glue
Seizing shackles
We used Loctite 243 Blue, but search online for ‘threadlock’ if you want to see a range of alternative products that will do the job just as well as this one
Apply the threadlock to the thread of the shackle pin. It’s not very viscous, so make sure you’ve got something down to protect the deck from any drips
Once you’ve got good coverage on the entire thread, screw the shackle pin into the shackle, again watching out for any drips
Use pliers or a shackle key to nip up the shackle as tight as you can. This will help the glue to adhere without any risk of movement
This is the finished result. It’s the quickest and neatest of the methods and there’s no external seizing to foul on anything. Very tidy
This is the only method of seizing available if you are using the flush-pin type of shackle that’s often found in ground tackle set-ups
Seizing with cable ties
Cable ties are cheap to buy online or from many hardware shops. Thread it through the pin’s hole, then through the shackle’s loop
Next push the tie through the ratchet lock and pull it up as tight as you can. This will prevent the shackle pin from unscrewing itself
To make the cable tie seizing as compact as possible, use pliers to pull the tie through the ratchet lock as tight as you can manage
Snip off the excess length of tie leaving only a very short stub, to reduce any risk of the tie fouling or chafing on anything. It looks much neater, too
The finished article. It’s the quickest, simplest method and a good short-term solution. ideal for shackles that need to be undone occasionally over the course of the season
Here we see a cable tie seize on a shackle used to connect anchor and chain. It’s exposed to the sun, so is likely to become brittle from UV degradation after a year or so
Seizing with Monel wire
To start, with the shackle pin nipped up tight, cut a piece of wire about 15cm (6in) long and hold 5cm (2in) of it under the side of the shackle
Poke the wire up through the hole in the shackle pin then down through the shackle itself and repeat so you have two loops of wire around the shackle and through the pin
Use pliers to tighten the wire as much as you can to snug down the seizing onto the shackle. This helps to prevent any movement in the wire
With the second loop of wire wrapped and tightened, use pliers to twist the two ends of the wire together, again keeping it tight
Once you have got five or six twists on the ends, snip off the excess wire, press the twist against the shackle body and you’re done
This is Monel wire seizing on a spinnaker halyard block shackle. It’s a strong and durable solution for shackles that you can’t inspect regularly

- When sizing a stainless steel shackle for your anchor and Grade 30 galvanized chain, pick a shackle one size larger than the chain and the shackle will be the same strength as the chain.
- When sizing a stainless steel shackle for your anchor and Grade 40 galvanized chain, only a shackle one size larger will fit and the shackle will be 60 – 70% the strength of the chain. We recommend using a Mantus swivel to match the strength of the shackle connection to that of the Grade 40 chain.

Sizing Shackles The maximum size of your anchor shackle is limited by the size of your anchor-chain links. When you are choosing shackles, the surest way to ensure that you are getting the right size is to take a few connected links of chain with you to the chandlery and make sure the shackle pin actually fits the hole.

Galvanized Boat Anchor Shackles Make the assembly of anchor, line, and chain easier with the Shoreline Marine Boat Anchor Shackles. These stainless shackles are tough and have undergone a hot-dipped galvanization process that adds a protective zinc-layering on the surface and makes it rust-proof.
Makers distinguish their shackle grades by coloring the pins: For example, the Crosby uses silver; Peerless (Peer-Lift line) uses blue pin; and Campbell uses orange. If you use the 3/8-inch Acco G43 chain, we highly recommend going with a Grade B bow shackle one size up. The Peer-Lift Grade B 7/16-inch shackle should fit the hole in 3/8-inch ...
Swivel Shackles With so many moving parts on a boat, being confident in your equipment when connecting them is of the utmost importance. The connection is always the weakest point and the marine shackle choice can make a huge difference in safety and performance from anchoring to rigging.

We carry a large variety, including anchor shackles, chain shackles, twist shackles, and more, all made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel and galvanized steel.
We generally recommend that you select a shackle that is one size larger than the chain. For example, if you have 1/4" chain, select a 5/16" shackle. are used to prevent the boat from twisting the chain. An additional benefit to using swivel anchor connectors is that they ride more easily over a bow roller when weighing anchor.
Shackles: Anchor (bow) or chain ("D") style shackles will break under lighter loads than they are rated for—up to half—when they are side-loaded. A shackle attached to an anchor is the component most likely to experience side loads, so you should make certain its WLL is greater than the ground tackle's calculated maximum load.
The Mantus anchor swivel and shackle is the first to feature an oblong pin to maximize the pin strength.
