Marine Engineering Jobs

Please note: you must have an EU passport or a Greek work visa to apply! Do not apply if you are not eligible to work in Greece.

Sail Ionian are looking to expand their team of marine engineers for the 2024 season. The maintenance and appearance of our yachts is of great importance. Therefore our engineering team is a vital part of the company. Our reputation as the leading charter company in the Ionian hinges on guest satisfaction and our engineers ensure that everything on a yacht is kept in top condition.

As a dealer for Bavaria we stock an entire warehouse of spare parts, this not only makes sure all the equipment on the yacht works but makes the job easier and more enjoyable. We like to see our engineers take pride in their job and in their yachts. Find out more about our company here.

In short, yacht engineering is a very varied role including everything from engine maintenance, electrical and plumbing to fibreglass work. Similarly our charter fleet is varied and consists of yachts from 30 feet – 56 feet including catamarans. In addition, our engineers are also responsible for our fleet of three fast RIBs, an RYA Powerboat qualification (or equivalent) is a strong advantage for this role.

What is the work like at Sail Ionian?

Firstly, during the summer sailing season our engineering team is busiest on the day our guests arrive. Each yacht is thoroughly checked and any repairs made before the guests board. Once the yacht is out on charter the engineering team will take calls from guests with issues and if necessary go out on one of our three fast RIBs to the yacht and swiftly fix any problems. Secondly, over the winter months our team work in the nearby boat yard completing a full annual maintenance program on each yacht.

In conclusion, whether you have years of engineering experience or simply a passion for boats then why not apply for this fantastic opportunity.

Applicants must hold an EU passport or Greek residence permit, full EU valid driving license and have experience with sailing yachts up to 60ft.

This job would suit an active person with good people skills.  Sail Ionian demand a high level of initiative and teamwork skills.  Marine engineers with Sail Ionian are able to work independently with the full support of our team.

Any relevant qualifications should be mentioned on application.

Details of remuneration on request and subject to experience.

Yacht Charters in Greece with Istion

Greece is quite simply the perfect sailing destination in Europe. Blessed with a mild southern Mediterranean climate with an extended summer giving a comfortable sailing season of close to eight months, our small country has over 13,000 kilometres of coastline to explore . That impressive number comes from the over 6000 islands and islets scattered like diamonds in the sea, each of them inviting you to swim for hours, socialise while tasting Greece’s well know cuisine and enjoy the beauty of a Greek summer spent next to the waves. Greece is truly a sailor’s paradise .

At Istion Yachting, we have been providing unforgettable sailing holidays in Greece for more than 30 years. From our humble beginnings on the island of Kos in 1992 we now offer charters throughout Greece from our 11 main charter bases. Our experienced skippers and crews, charter base staff, planning departments and every one of the wider Istion team is an expert in their field and is ready to assist you in planning the perfect sailing holiday in Greece . We look forwarded to welcoming you this summer!

There are so many options, and only so much time. The diversity of the different sailing areas in Greece makes picking just one difficult, which is why so many of our guests come back to sail again and again . There is always another beautiful island to visit and another idyllic beach to swim on!

Peak sailing season is from late June through August with hot weather, warm seas and busy islands. Availability can become limited during this period so booking early is essential.

Late spring from May to June and late summer from September to early October are often considered the best time to sail for experienced sailors and repeat visitors to our country. The weather is great and the islands are more relaxed than the busy summer months.

For those who want to live the real Greek way of life, April and October can be rewarding, with less heat, fewer visitors and enticing low-season offers . A few of the restaurants and shops on some islands may not have opened or may have closed for the season, but in our opinion early and late season sailing in Greece is a magical and unique experience .

The Argo Saronic Gulf is actually two gulfs (the Saronic and Argolic ) that are often referred to together in sailing terms given their close distances to each other. The Saronic Gulf lies in between Athens and the coast of the Argolid Peninsula while the Argolic Gulf is one hop over in between the peninsula and the first large leg of the Eastern Peloponnese , which runs all the way south to Monemvasia.

We often recommend this area to first time sailors for a number of practical reasons. First and foremost, it is the easiest area to reach from Athens , which makes it an ideal spot for those arriving via the Athens International Airport. Within a few hours of touching down you can be swimming and relaxing on board having reached your first destination.

Another advantage is that the area is well protected from the annual Meltemi winds that can blow strongly in July and August and may create challenging conditions for less experienced sailors.

The Argo Saronic Gulf also has plenty of places to visit on either a one or two-week holiday. One-week holidays will usually take in the nearby islands of Aigina and Poros before looping down to the coastal town of Ermioni and the cosmopolitan islands of Spetses and Hydra further south. A visit to Epidavros for a quick trip to its famous ancient theatre is not to be missed for the history buffs.

Two week holidays allow you to explore further east, with the coastal towns of Nafpleio, Leonidio and Kyparissi offering relaxed mooring while cruising the coast of the Eastern Peloponnese.

We invite you to learn more about our Athens charter base , download our sample one-week Saronic Gulf sailing itinerary for inspiration and contact us with any questions, we are here to help you plan your perfect sailing holiday.

Ah, the Cyclades. A name steeped in history that brings the classic image of a Greek island to everyone’s mind. While Greece has many island chains and all of them are unique and magical, the Cyclades has become nearly synonymous with the county as a whole for many visitors.

Characterised by their white houses, rugged landscapes and world famous beaches , the Cyclades attract visitors from around the world and are a must see for everyone at some point in their life. For sailors the area offers a huge variety of routes and islands to visit, from the world famous islands Mykonos and Santorini to the popular Paros and Naxos and many, many more in between.

A note about the Meltemi winds that blow from the north in July and August. In the Cyclades these winds can make for challenging conditions and sailing the area during these times is best for experienced sailors. Don’t despair all you beginner sailors! If you want a helping hand our skippers are the best in Greece and will be happy to take care of the sailing and navigation so you can enjoy the islands worry free.

The Cyclades are reached from our main base in Alimos Marina on the western side of Attica giving quick access to the islands of Kea, Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos and Milos among others.

Our base in Lavrion is perfect for getting a head start to the islands of Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos . The Lavrion base is further south and on the east side of Attica, saving a couple of hours of additional sailing time on your way out. As an added bonus, Lavrion is just half an hour from the Athens International Airport so you can be on your way towards your destination just an hour or two after landing.

Located on the western side of Greece the seven main islands of the Ionian Sea have their own unique charm and character . The Ionian Islands are much greener than most islands in Greece, their location and geography bringing more rainfall during the winter months and allowing trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. The combining of colours between the green of the hills , the white of the sands and the blue of the sea are a special treat for visitors to this area.

Istion maintains three bases in the Ionian, on Corfu in the north and in Lefkas (or Lefkada) and nearby Preveza further south.

Itineraries starting from Corfu may include multiple stops along the Corfu coast, visits to the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos and visits to mainland ports including Parga and Syvota .

Trips starting from Lefkas or Preveza may head either north towards Corfu or South towards the islands of Kalamos and Kastos and then on to the mythical island of Ithaca and nearby Kefalonia . Note that our base in Preveza is just 10 minutes from the Aktion Airport where all charter flights to Lefkas arrive. If your flight times are tight, Preveza is a great option .

We recommend downloading our sample sailing itineraries for trips leaving from Corfu and from Lefkas or Preveza . If you need more recommendations for a truly unique voyage through to the Ionian just contact us , we will be happy to help.

The Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean are close to our heart. The central island of Kos is where Istion Yachting first started operations in 1992 .

The Dodecanese are known for their wonderful beaches and rich history ranging from the ancient to the medieval to the modern in a delightful kaleidoscope of sights and sounds . The area has relatively mild wind conditions that are perfect for sailing throughout the year and has plenty of sun and warmth during the summer months.

Istion now has two bases in the Dodecanese, our home base on Kos and another on the historic island of Rhodes . From Kos you may head north towards the islands of Kalimos, Leros and Patmos and if time permits all the way to amazing Ithaki and Fourni .

Heading south from Kos will put you on course to visit the islands north of Rhodes including Nisiros, Tilos and Symi . Setting sail from Rhodes itself also reaches these islands or you can choose to head west, exploring the coast of Rhodes and visiting the quaint island of Chalki and the beautiful islands of Karpathos and Kasos .

Charter flights from most European countries fly direct to both Kos and Rhodes making them a great starting point for your next Aegean adventure !

The Sporades are the hidden gem on the Greek sailing map . Nestled off the eastern coast of central Greece the main islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are a beautiful combination of green mountains, sandy and pebble beaches and deep blue seas. Nature plays a staring role here, with the National Marine Park at Alonissos being a significant refuge for the Monachus Monachus or Mediterranean seal .

Sailing conditions in the Sporades are relatively mild, although winds can shift between the day and night requiring some care when mooring. Distances between islands are short allowing a lot of fun to be packed into a week long charter .

We have two charter bases servicing the Sporades, a base on the island of Skiathos where most European charter flights arrive and another on the mainland city of Volos . Volos is a convenient starting spot for guests arriving by road with their own vehicle and allows exploring of the lovely coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf and Pelion on your way out to the islands – highly recommended !

Bareboat Charters

Tailored for the seasoned sailor, bareboat charters hand the helm over to you, allowing complete freedom to navigate the Greek seas at your own pace . Your sailing party must have at least one licensed skipper and one experienced crew member at a minimum to be able to rent our yachts as bareboats.

If you have some sailing experience but do not hold a valid license then a bareboat charter is not (yet) for you and your best option is a skippered charter where our friendly captains will give you a helping hand. If you are an experienced sailor and have no concerns about the challenges of wind conditions, navigation and docking then we invite you to read more about our bareboat charters here and contact us with any questions you may have.

Skippered Charters

Our skippered charters are the perfect blend of guidance and freedom, designed for those who have some sailing experience, are eager to learn or just want to relax and let a professional do the hard work . With an Istion skipper at your side, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with their expert navigation and docking skills while still playing an active role in your sailing adventure.

It's an educational and exhilarating experience where you can hone your sailing skills, participate in manoeuvring the yacht, and even take the helm under the watchful eye of your skipper. It is an amazing experience for everyone and kids in particular have a great time learning about sailing and playing little captain for a week.

Our skippered charters always start off with a briefing between you and your skipper so you can learn about the area you are going to sail and the islands you may want to visit. Our skippers know the Greek seas inside out and based on your preferences they will suggest recommended itineraries to follow, which islands to visit and what hidden beaches to swim at.

If you are planning your first sailing holiday in Greece , you are in the very best hands with Istion's professional skippers by your side. Read more about our skippered charters here , or just get in touch to start planning your perfect sailing holiday in Greece.

Fully Crewed Charters

For those of you that want to indulge in the epitome of maritime luxury, our crewed charters promise a carefree and opulent experience in Greece. This option is perfect for those who wish to sit back, relax, and soak in the Mediterranean sun while every detail is taken care of by our professional crew. From expert navigation to gourmet meals, and from personalized itineraries to attentive service, every aspect of your voyage is meticulously curated to ensure unparalleled comfort and elegance .

Crewed charters are available on a range of our top end sailing yachts and catamarans , and for those that want the thrum of an engine beneath their feet and to make a grand entrance wherever they go our exclusive motor yachts are waiting for you to step aboard. A crewed charter with Istion isn't just a holiday; it's an all-inclusive experience where you are the honoured guest and the Greek Isles your exclusive playground . Discover more about our fully crewed dream vacations here .

Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are perfect for those who love the classic feeling of sailing. Designed to be easy to handle, they smoothly glide through the water and let you enjoy the natural beauty of the Greek seas. They're a bit slower than other boats, and they lean to one side when the wind blows, which is all part of the classic sailing adventure. Their charming appearance and comfortable ride make them ideal for those who want to experience traditional sailing in a relaxed and eco-friendly way.

Sailing yachts are also the most budget friendly option for a sailing holiday in Greece. Our smaller yachts with three cabins and space for up to six guests (or eight if two sleep in the main cabin) can be rented for as little as roughly 1200 Euros a week in the low season. Costs for larger yachts with up to 6 cabins and space for up to 12 guests rise to approximately 10.000 Euros a week in the high season.

At Istion, we proudly offer a wide selection of the latest models as well as impeccably maintained older sailing yachts from Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Sun Odyssey, Hanse and other top shipyards. Whether you're planning a cozy trip for a small group or a grand sailing adventure for a larger party, we have the right yacht to suit your needs.

Catamarans are the choice for those who want lots of space and a stable, comfortable trip. With their two-hull design, they don't rock as much as sailing yachts, which is great if you're new to sailing or easily feel seasick. You can also get closer to the beach with a catamaran, as they don't sit very deep in the water. Catamarans offer a smooth and spacious experience, making for a relaxing and comfortable sailing holiday and are a very popular choice for first time sailors in Greece.

For families and larger groups, the bigger cabins and more room to move around on a catamaran make them a good fit for your holiday. The double hull layout means two families can easily sail together while each having their own 'private space' on either side of the main deck. Catamarans also tend to have one washroom per cabin, a feature all parents with teenage kids appreciate.

The comfort and space offered in a catamaran puts them in a higher budget bracket than our monohull sailing yachts. Our smallest catamarans with four cabins and room for up to 10 guests start at roughly 2100 Euros per week in low season. Our top of the line models can range up to 16.000 Euros plus in the middle of the high season.

We are proud to have one of the largest fleets of catamarans in Greece with brand new models from Lagoon, Bali and Fountaine Pajot among others. We invite you to browse all our catamarans and contact us for any guidance you need to help make your sailing adventure in Greece perfect in every way.

Motor Yachts

Motor yachts are all about luxury and speed. They have multiple levels with lots of space, including big bedrooms and expansive living areas. These boats move quickly, powered by strong engines, so they're great if you want to explore a lot of places fast and make an impressive entrance wherever you go.

Our motor yachts are all modern, with plush interiors and all the latest features for entertainment and entertaining. However, they do use more fuel and require a professional captain and crew, so there's a higher cost for this kind of luxury and speed. If you're looking for a high-end and fast-paced trip with all the modern comforts, motor yachts are the way to go .

Special Cruising Requirements & Documentation For Greece

  • Individual passports of all crew members are inspected on entry into Greece aboard a yacht, as is the case on departure with the same yacht. If leaving or arriving by other means (e.g. by air or ferry), documents will be inspected by Immigration at the point of arrival/exit and any visa (if required) date stamped.
  • All non-EU yachts must clear in with the port police, Customs, Health, Immigration and Currency Control on arrival. The ship’s papers – including detailed crew list – will be inspected by the port police and cruising tax levied as detailed below.
  • EU-registered yachts need only report to the port police office at their first port of call with their documents and pay the cruising tax as detailed below. Proof of VAT payment may be required but in practice is rarely asked for.
  • Yachts must carry their original registration documents and ship’s radio station licence – one member of the crew must be in possession of a certificate to operate the radio/VHF
  • 293,470 EURO liability for death or injury by sinking, collision or other cause for crew and third parties,
  • 146,753 EURO for damage,
  • 88,041 EURO for pollution.
  • The skipper should have an International Certificate of Competence (although in practice this is rarely requested)
  • For non-EU citizens, nights should be spent on board (not in hotels ashore, etc) – if not, the Harbour Master and the Immigration officer should be notified
  • The registered yacht owner/skipper should be on board. If handing the boat’s command to someone else, ensure that the proper documentation is obtained from the Port Police
  • Fishing is only allowed with a snorkel in certain areas. Fishing with scuba gear is prohibited
  • To protect archaeological sites, scuba diving is restricted – permission should be sought locally
  • Chartering by foreign yachts is now allowed, but the vessel must be inspected and certificated according to Greek law, a process that involves a huge amount of red tape

Fees and Charges

  • From 1 January 2014  all boats entering Greek waters are subject to a new cruising tax, irrespective of how long they stay. The tax is levied as follows:  Overall length 7m – 8m: €200; 8m – 10m: €300; 10m – 12m: €400; Over 12m: €100/metre.  There is a 30 per cent reduction for yachts permanently kept in Greece. For yachts over 12m, it is also possible to pay the tax on a monthly basis at a rate of €10 per metre. It appears that this new tax will replace all other current taxes, including the  Transit Log , but until it is fully in force this is not absolutely certain.  Athene of Lymington
  • EU-registered yachts have for a number of years been required to obtain a  Dekpa at their first port of call at a cost of 30 EURO, to be presented for stamping on arrival at and departure from each subsequent port of call. The  Dekpa  is valid until there is no more space for stamps, when a new one must be purchased. In practice, it is only required to be presented once a month for stamping. Currently it appears that the issuing and stamping of the  Dekpa  will continue after 2014 (when new regulations are due to be introduced to coincide with the introduction of the new cruising tax).
  • Note:The Depka situation has changed from 14/4/2014. The Greek law is number 4256/2014 and the main points that affect private cruising boats are as follows: 1. it is only necessary for Greek flagged and EU flagged boats to obtain a DEKPA stamp once per calendar year (this will be when you pay the cruising tax – whenever they start collecting that). 2. Greek flagged and EU flagged boats only need to visit the port police on first entry to Greece and then only once per calendar year (Chapter D Article 10.1a). 3. Greek flagged and EU flagged boats do not need to report to the port police on entry or exit to/from any Greek ports (Chapter D Article 10.2). 4. The Depka requirement applies to yachts over 7.0 metres (previously, it applied only to yachts over 9.0 metres).

Transit Log

  • As of 1st October 2015 Greece has re-adopted the EU-wide protocol for non-EU flagged yachts. Non-EU fagged yachts will be issued with a Transit Log on first entry to Greece that allows VAT-free movement anywhere in EU waters (including Greece of course) for up to 18 months. The EU rules also allow for an extension to 24 months, Greece has indicated that this extension will be available on application (HMRC in the UK reserves it for ‘exceptional circumstances’). The 18 month clock can be stopped by placing the boat in customs bond (which in Greece means on the hard and local customs advised). Neither the EU, nor Greece, specifies how long a boat must be out of EU waters before it can return for another 18 month Transit Log. It is likely in Greece that evidence of leaving the EU will be required (a marina receipt for example) but it should be possible, on expiry of the 18 month Transit Log, to pop over to Turkey for a night and then return to Greece and obtain another 18 month Transit Log. The TPP (cruising tax) will have to be paid by non-EU flagged yachts at the same rates as EU flagged yachts (when and if it is ever introduced).
  • Note that these provisions only apply to non-EU flagged yachts that are owned by a non-EU resident. Non-EU flagged yachts owned by EU residents will be given a Transit Log valid for only 30 days, after which the yacht must either permanently leave EU waters or be imported into an EU country and VAT paid. This provision is to allow EU residents to purchase a yacht that is not VAT paid in the EU and export it.

Other charges

  • All public harbours charge a mooring or anchoring fee based on the tonnage and length of the yacht that is  usually around €8 for an 11.0 metre yacht, payable to the port police. Boats from EU countries pay lower fees than those from non-EU countries, while Greek flagged boats pay even less. A debate is currently taking place in the Greek marine ministry as to whether the new cruising tax should replace these local payments entirely –  Athene of Lymington .
  • If a boat is stored ashore a ‘lift permission’ is required, and a ‘launch permission’ to launch it. These are obtainable from the Port Police and cost a few euros – and some tax. Good boatyards will obtain these for you.
  • Note:Non-EU boats may now be charged by the port police a fee (I paid 672 Euros in 2014 for a 10 metre sailboat) that was originally applied to non-EU fishing boats. I was told that this is a one time fee, due when a non-EU boat enters Greece for the first time. The port police in Lavrion are charging this fee but I am not aware of any other port police who are doing so. — Daphnoula .

Yacht charter in greece.

You can find a yacht charter in Greece and in different dream destinations around the world on the Nautal website. Flexible cancellation or changes up to 15 days before check-in is allowed on selected boats. Check the conditions established with each boat owner. Imagine tranquil and serene island coves, but blended perfectly with a summer clubbing utopia on island metropolitan hubs.

A Greek yacht charter is the best way of cruising the shimmering Greek sea and visiting the Greek islands and beaches of your choice. Discover lively islands such as Corfu, sophisticated bars and restaurants in small coastal towns in Lefkas , and the historical yet edgy new Athens which will take your breath away. Spend an evening on a bar terrace admiring the Acropolis and if you don’t want the night to end, get lost in its nightlife affairs...

If you want to make the most of the gorgeous weather and natural beauty consider a yacht rental in Greece. Whether you’d prefer to charter a boat with a skipper or would rather steer your own course, there are many destinations to visit, including fascinating Greek cities and a multitude of gorgeous islands that all add up to a dream holiday on the water.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in Greece?

On average, our exquisite yachts are available at just $2,670 per day or $18,690 per week, ensuring an unforgettable getaway. With the capacity to comfortably accommodate an average of 4 guests aboard the yacht, you can create cherished memories with your loved ones. Yachts are generally rented with a skipper and you can even find a crewed yacht charter in Greece if you want a really luxurious trip. Check the mandatory and included extras with the owner. Other factors that can influence the price are length, age of a yacht, capacity, duration of charter, extras, etc.

Is it possible to rent a yacht in Greece with or without a skipper?

It is possible to find a yacht charter in Greece with or without a skipper. There are only a few yachts available without a skipper so if you’re set on a bareboat Greece sailing charter, make sure to book early! A bareboat yacht charter in Greece is a great idea if you want to be captain of your sailing experience.

If you are a new sailor we recommend a skippered yacht hire in Greece! This way, you can enjoy your sailing holiday, island hopping and swimming in the blue waters. Sailing yachts are also available with a crew that can cook delicious meals and prepare drinks for you and your guests. There is nothing like a private yacht charter in Greece to explore islands including Dodecanese islands !

How to rent a yacht in Greece?

You can find a suitably priced yacht hire in Greece on Nautal’s website. Whether you need to charter a larger yacht for a group of friends departing from Corfu or want to rent a smaller yacht for a romantic getaway leaving from Athens, it’s easy to plan your perfect holiday under the Greek sun on a yacht charter. A yacht charter in the Greek islands is always easy to do with endless choices on what to do.

All you have to do is decide how many berths you require, select whether or not you need a skipper, state your price range, then think about which stunning land and seascapes you want to see from your yacht rental in Greece.

What can I do with a yacht rental in Greece?

As Greece is located in southern Europe and enveloped by the Aegean, Cretan, Libyan and Ionian seas, a yacht rental in Greece has all the ingredients for a perfect holiday. Drop anchor for the day and explore the historic city of Athens, or choose Crete for your day trip and revel in the beautiful mountain ranges that cross the island. Filled with peninsulas and islands that are ripe for exploration, you can choose a route that takes in the scenery of Santorini , Corfu , Mykonos or Paros . Check out one of our recommended routes for Greece from Athens to Milos .

A luxury yacht charter in Greece can be from for a day or longer! If you choose to rent a yacht for a day, then why not beach hop and find your perfect paradise. In Greece, yacht charters give you more freedom to explore with your moving home.

If you find a week-long, skippered yacht charter in Greece, you can sit back and soak up the perfect weather while someone else takes care of getting you to your chosen destinations. The joys of your own exclusive yacht rental signify complete freedom to navigate to your favourite and most desired locations in Greece! We recommend going through the Aegean sea and discovering the numerous islands or staying close to the main cities such as Athens and heading to the Saronic islands.

A yacht charter in Greece gives you endless possibilities. No matter where you choose to sail you are sure to find turquoise waters, fishing villages and island chains to explore.

Other Sailing areas in Greece

Those renting in or visiting Athens should take some time to visit the iconic Acropolis and Parthenon. You can view the Acropolis in the evening from terrace bars such as 360 Cocktail Bar - a personal favourite! Avid gin lovers should also pop into Gin Joint and feast their eyes on all the incredible types of gins and inventive concoctions!

Scrumptious Greek food can be sampled (or devoured) at Tzitzikas Kai Mermigas and The Karamanlidika Fanis.

The Cyclades also offer exciting and luxurious opportunities. Moor in Mykonos and watch the sunset with a cool glass of champagne in view of the windmills of Kato Mili. The bar and nightlife here are chic, relaxed and oh-so-fun!

The Cyclades consist of many islands you can venture to on your luxury yacht charter in Greece. Snap away at Santorini’s spectacular mountainous landscape layered with pretty white houses and blue-domed churches.

You have many options for your yacht rental in Greece and so many things to do! Don't miss out!

What are the most popular islands to visit in Greece?

There isn’t really a definitive answer regarding which is the best Greek island to visit with your boat charter as each island has something unique to offer.  If you want to be privy to some of the most sensational sunsets in the Mediterranean, Santorini is the spot for you. The magnificent views and luxurious atmosphere of the island make it especially popular with honeymooners or couples looking for a romantic getaway. It also has a number of spectacular natural wonders, none more impressive than the underwater volcano that still simmers away to this day.

If Ancient Greek culture fascinates you, Crete is the island for you. The excavations at Knossos, which was at the heart of the Minoan civilisation are some of the most well-known in Greece and many of the finds are now on display in the Archaeology Museum of Heraklion. Ancient architecture is not all that Crete is good for though. It is also one of the best places to visit if you’re searching for secluded coves and hiking trails. The best beaches include those such as Preveli, Potamos, and Elafonissi.

If you want to visit some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, Zakynthos is a good bet. Shipwreck Beach, so-called for the shipwreck that lies in the middle, is only accessible by boat, making it fairly secluded, in spite of its popularity. The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari are another reason to visit Zakynthos.  Visit them and marvel at the seemingly neon glow of the light reflecting off the water onto the walls.

If you're in a party mood, you should go to Mykonos . While this island is every bit as beautiful as the other islands listed here, Mykonos is primarily known for its party scene, consisting mostly of beach clubs with lively dance music.

What weather and sailing conditions can you expect when you rent a yacht in Greece?

The weather in Greece, following the Mediterranean climate, from May to October is sublime. For those who enjoy scorching temperatures, visit in July and August when temperatures are 30°C+ and you can cool off in the pleasant sea waters.

The Meltemi wind usually blows in a northerly direction during the summer and can sometimes reach powerful wind forces depending on the area. This is worth researching, as areas in Greece vary. For example, in the Ionian Islands, the wind force in July and August ranges from 4-6, whereas in the Cyclades the wind force averages from 5-7.

What are the most popular ports to visit during a yacht hire in Greece?

Our yacht rentals are based all over Greece. You can start your yacht charter in the majestic and powerfully historic city of Athens, or alternatively, fly directly to an international island airport and go from there.

In Athens, you can rent a yacht in Marina Kalamaki, just 6 miles away from Athens city centre.

In Mykonos, you can rent a yacht in ports such as Tourlos Marina, Ornos and Platis Gialos Harbour.

We also rent yachts in the Cyclades and Ionian Islands , as well as the Saronic Gulf .

One of the top benefits of sailing Greek waters is that often you are not required to pay a mooring fee! Occasionally, the local authorities may ask you to pay a small fee of around $20 for vessels sized 38 ft and under.

How to get to Greece?

If you wish to arrive by plane for your yacht rental on the Greek islands, we have matched up our boat rental locations in accordance with the nearest airport below.

Cyclades islands.

Mykonos: Mykonos International Airport (JMK)

Indiana Pacers forward Pascal Siakam (43) dribbles the ball while Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis (9) defends during game six of the first round for the 2024 NBA playoffs at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

  • Milwaukee Bucks

MILWAUKEE — Over the past several years, Milwaukee Bucks center Bobby Portis has assembled one of the best bench-player resumés, yet believes he is underappreciated.

Playing all 82 games in 2023-24, Portis averaged 13.8 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from deep. The nine-year veteran finished second in the NBA for most bench points (1,052), trailing only 2024 Sixth Man of the Year winner Malik Monk, and recorded the most double-doubles (16) off the bench .

Bottom line: His defensive deficiencies aside, Portis again is expected to be one of Milwaukee's most important pieces in the front court.

Recently on X, Portis let his followers know that he hears all the chatter and disrespect.

The bp hate be for real..but it’s all good. Talk soon #UNDERDOG https://t.co/VV7bZSse4Z — Bobby BP Portis (@BPortistime) September 2, 2024

Bucks Portis' enters 2024-25 with a chance to silence his critics

There is no doubt about Portis' significance as a scorer, but his defense is a concern.

At 6-foot-10, Portis is too small to affect shots at the rim and he's not quick enough to slide with guards in switches. In pick-and-roll defense, Portis often hedges before the screen is set, slides with the ballhandler for too long, and jogs back to the roller.

There also have been some moments that make you scratch your head. In Game 4 against the Indiana Pacers last postseason, Portis was ejected for violent conduct in the first quarter — a stunning lack of awareness when the Bucks were playing without stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.

To silence his doubters in 2024-25, Portis need only improve his effort and tenacity on the defensive end. Is it too late for such a change? Look at teammate Brook Lopez.

The Bucks' starting center made NBA All-Defense teams in 2020 and 2023 — when he was 32 and then 35 years old.

In the meantime, Portis can use the outside noise as fuel to raise his game.

OLD LYME, Conn. (AP) — Authorities have found the bodies of both men who remained missing four days after a boat carrying nine people crashed into a jetty along the Connecticut shoreline. State environmental conservation police officers found the bodies Friday. One was found in the mouth of the Connecticut River between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, a short distance from the accident site. Officials didn’t detail the location of the second man’s body. Both names are being withheld pending notification of their families. Monday night’s crash killed a third man and injured six other people who were taken to a hospital. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

21 Migrants Missing at Sea as Boat Capsizes in Rough Seas Off Italy

Seven survivors were rescued from the boat that sank after leaving Libya. A crackdown by Italy has reduced migration, but not the high death rates that come with crossing the Mediterranean.

By Elisabetta Povoledo

Reporting from Rome

Twenty-one migrants were missing at sea on Wednesday, according to survivors rescued from a sinking boat about 10 miles from the Italian island of Lampedusa, Italy’s Coast Guard said.

Seven men, identified as Syrian, were rescued by a Coast Guard vessel on Wednesday morning. A video showed the migrants crouching in a small white motorboat, partly submerged, before being carried in pairs by a rubber raft to a waiting Coast Guard vessel.

The migrants told their rescuers that they had left Libya on Sunday on the boat packed with 28 people, including three minors. They said that 21 people had fallen off during the crossing because of “adverse weather conditions,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The seven survivors were taken to Lampedusa, one of the principal destinations for migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Africa to Europe on one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.

Last year, more than 212,000 migrants and refugees tried to cross the central Mediterranean Sea from North Africa, according to a report by the United Nations refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration, or I.O.M.

At least 3,105 lost their lives or disappeared at sea while trying to cross to Europe by various Mediterranean routes, according to the report. But it noted that “the real number of dead and missing along these routes is believed to be higher as many incidents go unreported or undetected.”

Since taking power nearly two years ago, Italy’s right-wing government has cracked down on illegal immigration, striking deals with Tunisia, renewing agreements with Libya and toughening laws against traffickers.

The government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has introduced rules against rescue ships operated by nongovernmental organizations, which Italy has accused of working with human traffickers, forcing them to take migrants to far-off northern ports.

And, stoking controversy, the government is building a center in Albania where migrants will be processed and returned to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

The government strategies have had an impact , government officials believe . There has been a 62 percent decrease in arrivals to Italy in 2024 — some 40,000 through August, compared with more than 113,000 for the same period in 2023 — according to the I.O.M.

Deaths at sea, however, have not comparably declined. As of Wednesday, nearly 1,100 migrants had gone missing in the central Mediterranean in 2024, according to the I.O.M. , just 25 percent fewer than the same period last year, said Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the organization in Italy.

The I.O.M. statistic did not include the more than 600 people who drowned off the coast of Greece last year, which Mr. Di Giacomo described as “one of the greatest tragedies in the Mediterranean.”

Mr. Di Giacomo said that another boat had sunk on Wednesday off the eastern coast of Libya, near Tobruk. Of the 32 people on board, 22 were missing and one person had drowned, he said.

Chiara Cardoletti, the top official in Italy for the United Nations refugee agency, or UNHCR, posted on X that the survivors of Wednesday’s rescue near Italy had been taken in by a local agency team “and were in critical condition.”

The survivors said that the boat had flipped over because the sea was rough. Many of the survivors said that they had lost relatives on the boat, Filippo Ungaro, a refugee agency spokesman in Italy, said in an interview. “The survivors told us that the boat overturned more than once,” he said.

“Another tragic shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa,” wrote Nicola Dell’Arciprete, the UNICEF country coordinator for Italy, on X .

The Coast Guard said it had deployed ships and an airplane to search for any possible survivors.

'Life here is much more easy': Migrants tell Sky News why PM's pledge to 'smash the gangs' won't work

Migrants say they don't believe government efforts to tackle smuggling gangs will stop illegal migration, with "thousands" of people willing to take the money of those determined to get to the UK.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer recently pledged to 'smash the gangs' that facilitate migrant crossings.

As cabinet ministers and law enforcement teams were meeting to discuss ways to enact the prime minister's pledge to "smash the gangs", in a flat in Manchester Hassan was bathing a kitten he's adopted since being granted asylum in Britain.

The 26-year-old knows all about the smuggling gangs that bring people over in small boats across the Channel from France.

He paid a gang around 2,000 euros (£1,690) to make the journey to the UK from Dunkirk four years ago.

He says there are "thousands" of people willing to take the money of people prepared to pay to get in a boat. Back home in Kurdistan he says they have offices and don't need to advertise what they do because "everybody knows who they are". Their business is based on recommendations and word of mouth.

He says there are "plenty" of gangs, adding "they all have contact with each other". And he says he understands why offering people like him a future in the UK is such big business.

"Life here is much more easy than the other countries. And you can find a beautiful life in here and work", he says, adding "even the government is helping the refugees here much better than the other countries".

Also in the Manchester flat is Mohammed. We've changed both their names to protect their identities. Mohammed is 30, also from Kurdistan, and came to the UK by small boat last year.

Unlike Hassan, he didn't pay smugglers back home but instead made his way to Calais where he said it was easy to find people to pay to get him in a boat.

He thinks a crackdown on gangs might reduce the number of crossings but believes there will always be other smugglers willing to take the place of those arrested.

Governments are remembered for action, not meetings

There is no bigger issue in British politics than illegal migration, and no one is more aware of that than the new prime minister.

He may only be two months into the job, but Sir Keir Starmer knows that a failure to bring down the number of small boats crossing the channel would define his premiership.

So, it was unsurprising that one of his first acts was to begin the process of turning his promise to "smash the gangs" into practice.

But what was surprising about today's four-hour, high-level meeting was the absence of any memorable moment that might reassure a restless public.

Labour may want to ditch gimmicks and usher in an era of grown-up government, but just sitting around a table could make them look like they're all talk and no bold action.

Flagship policies like the controversial Rwanda plan put forward by the previous administration are about more than getting headlines, they give voters a clear indication of what a party stands for.

When we look back on governments we remember the policies that changed the country, not the meetings, however long they last.

Despite tough talk from the new government and years of promises to "stop the boats" by the previous administration, thousands of people continue to make the perilous journey.

So far this year more than 20,000 people have arrived by small boat, more than during the same period last year.

Naveed and Mustafa are both 34 and from Iran. They came by small boat to the UK around 17 months ago.

They decided to pay smugglers to get them into Britain after being denied asylum in other European countries, including Germany. They each paid around £3,000.

"It was the only option we had, even then we were told we would be put on a ferry to the UK but by the time they got us to the shore we were put on a boat and we had no option but to accept it because if we didn't we would either be beaten up or we were told we would be shot," Naveed told Sky News.
