A Step-By-Step Guide to Yacht Paint Touch Ups

how to touch up paint scratches on yachts

Patrick Levitzke is from Port Macquarie, Australia. He left in 2019 to begin yachting, and found his first job on a private 82-foot Horizon, cruising the U.S. East Coast, with just the captain. Currently, he’s a deckhand on a 210-foot private yacht and has plans to complete his 200-ton license this year.

With the hustle of a busy charter season, scrapes and nicks are inevitable. This step-by-step guide will help you touch up your yacht’s paint, keeping it sharp until the next yard period.

While it’s often best to leave painting to the pros for the best finish, there will be times when you need to handle touch-ups yourself. Modern yacht paint jobs are becoming increasingly complex and harder to replicate, making the ability to perform minor repairs a valuable skill set on board. Ideally, touch-ups should focus on minor scrapes and chips, helping you maintain your yacht’s appearance until the next full paint job. Generally, these repairs should be no larger than a credit card; anything bigger will require more effort to achieve proper blending and color matching.

As with many jobs on board, 90 percent is preparation. So first, consult a product data or technical data sheet specific to the paint manufacturer. If you don’t have one handy, you should be able to find a PDF online — just ensure you have the correct color code or name associated with the yacht to reference. This document will explain how to prepare the paint, in what ratios, and how best to apply it. There will be a different process for the fairing compound, the base coat, and the topcoat. Hopefully, you can get away with just applying a fresh topcoat layer to touch-ups; however, for the purpose of instruction, we’ll assume it’s a deeper repair and build from the fairing layer up.

Additionally, seasoned varnishers will recognize much of the same practices that apply to painting. Painting or varnishing in windy conditions will almost always lead to bubbling and dust specks ruining the finish. Likewise, painting in a dusty shipyard or close to highways will lead to bubbling from air particles landing on paint. When possible, it’s best practice to tent off or enclose areas you’d like to paint. It also pays to check the weather, as high heat, direct sunlight, and precipitation will all lead to an unhappy final product.

1. Clean the area to remove grit, grease, or dirt, and remove any loose or flaking paint with a scraper.

2. Tape off the area you want to work in and begin sanding with medium/fine grit to ensure good adhesion and shape for the new fairing compound. Consult your data sheet for preparing the fairing compound, as most will require some kind of curing time after mixing the resin with a hardener.

3. Clean the area with alcohol or a similar solvent to remove residual sanding dust, and apply the fairing with a putty knife or scraper to match the adjacent contouring. This is usually the hardest part, and for first-timers, don’t worry, it’ll take a few goes to get the shape right. Once fully cured, sand back and repeat these steps as necessary.

4. Now, we move on to the base and topcoat. The paint layering for most yachts is fairing, primer, base coat, and topcoat. Each layer will have specific mixing arrangements and drying times, found in the data sheet of your particular paint color code and brand. It can be time-consuming, yet flexible to do in between other jobs, so plan accordingly. Remember, windy, dusty conditions will almost certainly ruin a paint job, with dust and particles settling in the fresh paint. Tent and prepare if the touch-up calls for it.

5. Before you begin sanding to match the fairing with the surrounding shape, first tape the perimeter of the repair area to limit the surface that you’re sanding. Blue masking tape is fine, although less adhesive painter-friendly tape is often better on the paint. As always, avoid leaving tape on paint in direct sunlight, or any adhesive for that matter. You’ll be repeating the taping process for each coat applied, with a light sand between each coat with a fine grit (220 to 320). Shaping the fairing may take a few tries to get right, especially if working in tricky contouring. If necessary, reapply fairing as needed until adequate shaping is achieved.

6. Next up is the primer to apply onto the fairing. Primer is needed for additional paint layers to adhere to, as they won’t adhere well by themselves, and will also “seal” the fairing compound. Primer is okay for a single coat, sometimes two.

7. The base coats provide correct coloring and blending, applied in one to three coats. For application, using a brush or roller is fine for smaller areas; however, you’ll get a better finish with a spray application. If spraying, avoid overspray at all costs and tent or cover as necessary. As with all painting, it’s best practice to apply many thin layers rather than one or two thick layers. The base coat is the first layer of the visible finish and is needed to provide a smooth surface to which the topcoats will be applied.

8. Our topcoat is the final aesthetic look that provides UV protection, durability, and the glossy finish, with two to three topcoats being ideal. A uniform topcoat will depend on all layers underneath it, and when applying topcoat, move the taped area fractionally further out to blend it with the surrounding area, as you sand between coats.

It’s easy to get caught up in the complexity of painting, which is why I’d much rather leave it to the experts. Touch-ups are only meant to get you through until the next full-vessel paint job. It’s extremely difficult to get them flawless. But at the end of the day, it’ll likely be better than the damage in the first place, and a bigger skill set means better salary. Happy painting!

How to Touch Up Painted Aluminum

Painted Aluminum

When it comes to aluminum and paint, the best coating is—nothing. As a result of a process known as passivation, aluminum, when exposed to air, develops an extremely hard and resilient oxide coating. The reason aluminum spars, ports, and pedestals are painted or coated is simply to enhance their appearance. Anodizing is a popular alternative, but many feel it’s not as attractive as the high-gloss finish of polyurethane.

The weak link in painted aluminum hardware is its propensity to corrode when the coating is breached. A nick or scratch allows water to migrate under the coating, where air is in short supply. The aluminum remains active rather than passive, and the result is poultice corrosion, of which there are two types: dry, identifiable by a white powder, and wet, which produces a white goo.

Therefore, if you have painted aluminum hardware on board—and nearly every boat does—the best approach is to prevent damage to the paint; if damage does occur, make your repairs quickly. In terms of prevention, bed each and every piece of hardware, from individual fasteners to mast steps, tracks, and compass bases, where they interface with painted surfaces. Bedding reduces paint damage and seals that which occurs, preventing water from entering the breach.

For small nicks and scratches, first remove any loose paint or chips. Next, use a clean rag that’s been rinsed in fresh water and allowed to dry to dewax the surface by wiping it down with a solvent such as 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover. Then, with an artist’s brush and a high-quality enamel or single-part epoxy paint that closely matches the existing pigment, simply fill the nick or scratch. A couple of coats will build up thickness. Priming is impractical for small areas, so don’t sweat it. If it’s a high-visibility area, let the repair fully cure, then lightly sand it using 600-grit sandpaper followed by paste polishing compound and wax.

If you’re handy, repair larger areas, such as peeling ports or pedestals, using sandpaper, masking tape, and a brush. Remove all loose paint, then sand the hard edges where the sound paint remains using 220-grit sandpaper; sand so there’s a gradual transition between paint and bare metal.

Next, clean the surface with solvent (avoid touching it after) and mask the area (the tape should bisect the area on the existing, sanded paint). Then, using a good brush that won’t shed, apply an aluminum-compatible primer, preferably from the same manufacturer as the paint you intend to use. Follow the directions, which may call for sanding between primer and topcoat. Then apply the topcoat; use either a high-quality brush that’s designed for the type of paint you’re using or a one-time spray bottle, such as those from Preval . If you use the latter, masking will be much more important and will need to cover a larger area; never attempt this job on a breezy day. Depending on coverage, several coats may be required.

Once the paint is cured, carefully remove the masking tape by pulling it parallel with the surface, not perpendicular. Use the same sanding and polishing techniques described above. Some might ponder the use of a two-part paint for such repairs. While more durable, it’s not for the inexperienced; be prepared to use a respirator and other protective gear. If you’re experienced with such paints and use the necessary gear, the finish is more durable.

We like going one size over what is often recommended for smaller boats. The advantages are a.Less stretch. Nylon can be too stretchy, but polyester not stretchy enough. One size over can be a Goldilocks answer. b.Better wear resistance. Because we like using short chain when hand-hauling, we cover the first 10 feet with a webbing chafe guard. This is very cut resistant, because unlike the rope inside, it is floating and not under tension. c. Better grip. ⅜-in. is pretty hard to grab with the wind is up. ½-in. fits our hands better. Varnish Touch-ups and Take-downs

touch up yacht

To keep brightwork healthy, approach it as you (hopefully) do your own health. Set a regular maintenance schedule (like an annual checkup), keep a first-aid kit on hand to address any symptoms of ill health, and practice preventative care (ignoring ailing varnish only makes the cure more grueling for the doctor).

Keeping varnished areas covered and rinsing them frequently with fresh water will mean less doctoring. Regular maintenance coats (before the coating begins to fail) will extend the life of a finish. Re-apply a teak oil or stain every three months or so; usually this just entails cleaning and re-coating the wood, although light sanding may be needed; follow maker suggestions. The timeframe for refreshing varnish alternatives will vary. Like varnishes, alternatives with a clear overcoat should be refreshed (two coats) annually; those without should be refreshed every six months or less in the tropics. If the gloss begins to look dull, its time for a refresher. A good scrubbing will remove dirt and grease, then sand the surface with 220- to 320-grit or bronze wool, and lay on two new finish coats.

Between refresher rounds with varnish, address scratches, lifting at joints, or blistered areas as quickly as possible to keep moisture from ruining the whole show. First, clean the spot with a recommended solvent, lightly sand with 100-grit (moving up to 320-grit), feathering at the edges. After another pass with solvent and a tack rag, apply varnish and repeat until the thickness matches surrounding areas. This should be easier with the alternatives as their coating is softer and requires less sanding. To patch flaws in Cetol, clean the area, scrubbing against the wood grain, let it dry, and then apply the Cetol.

Varnish Touch-ups and Take-downs

Having a varnish first-aid kit handy will make these band-aids easy and fast. A kit should include: a medium artists brush, handle cut to 1 inch; a cleaned spice jar; sheets of 100-, 220-, and 320-grit sandpaper; a tack rag; and a clean cloth rag. Screw the paint brush to the jars top with a self-tapping screw; fill the jar with varnish, and seal well. Rubberband the sandpaper to the jar. Put the rags in a Ziploc, and stow it all in an easily accessible place. (Tips adapted from www.landlpardey.com .)

Whether its a varnish or a softer alternative, if its suffering from old age or widespread peeling, cracking, streaking, or simply lost its luster, a total overhaul is the only cure. Takedown methods for varnish include sanding (for removing thinner coatings), dry scraping or heating and scraping (best for thicker finishes), and chemical stripping. Heat guns and strippers should be used with caution around painted and fiberglass surfaces; rinse the stripper thoroughly from the wood as any residue will cause adhesion problems. For varnish alternatives: Sand with 80 grit and move up to 220, clean, and re-coat. Industry tests have shown that adhering to a tighter scale of increasing grit gets the job done quicker; an 80-120-150-200 step down is more productive than going directly from 100 to 220.

Our favorite resources on varnish maintenance include Don Caseys Sailboat Refinishing, Rebecca Wittmans Brightwork, and Sherri Boards Boat Cosmetics Made Simple.

Does Our Boat Need Full Bottom Paint or Touch up?

boat prep bottom paint

With multi-season bottom paint you may not need to sand and paint your full boat’s bottom every year – here’s our plan for painting touch up [includes VIDEO]

boat gear shop

Every spring the anticipation of the boating season ahead also comes with a lot of prep to get your boat ready. Bottom painting, cleaning, waxing, putting up the canvas… there’s a lot of spring boat preparation to be done!

We keep our boat in the water year-round and have brackish water, so it’s important for our hull to have antifouling bottom paint. Bottom paint (aka antifouling paint) is an important coating for your boat’s hull to guard against weeds, barnacles, and other aquatic organisms from attaching themselves to the underwater portion of your boat’s hull. Without protection, your boat performance can suffer (or even be damaged).

The process of bottom painting can be messy and costly to do every year. It requires sanding down the boat’s bottom and repainting with new antifouling paint to continue protection. But luckily if you use multi-season paint you can get away with a touch up for a year or two.

starlink sale

How Bottom Paint Works – Single vs Multi-Season

Bottom paint works by releasing a small amount of biocide over time that keeps any algae, plants or animals from adhering to the hull. But there are differences in how long the paint lasts with single-season or multi-season paints.

  • Multi-season ablative paints will still work if you pull a boat for winter storage and relaunch it next season
  • Single-season ablative paints need to be applied every year

While multi-season paint may be a bit more expensive, it can save you a lot of time repainting your boat’s bottom year after year.

Touch-up Bottom Painting

We use multi-season bottom paint and applied it to our full boat bottom a few seasons ago so we decided that this year we can get away with just a touch up.

We prepped the bottom by removing any barnacles and then painted areas where the paint was worn away (paying particular attention to the barnacle spots).

Captain Brian shows you his plan for touch up this year and explains his process in this video:

Boat: Feltz Scorpion II 12m bermudia rig pilothouse
yacht but now I am after an primer to just touch up areas where the has been damaged, the choice is more difficult.
They do, do a primer which seems ideal, called Smart Pack Aluminium which has a mixing ratio of 1 to 1 making it easy to get right in small quantities, it is also tolerant of surface preparation etc. The problem is the smallest quantity you can get it in is 10 litres so as just a touch up I would end up throwing away 95% of it in around 4 years time depending on how many times I have had to reopen the cans (Jotun paint is fine but the cans are very flimsy).
Has anyone out there got any recommendations?

Many Thanks In Advance

Friends have suggested Pettit Rustloc. It can be had in pint cans. It wants 5 to 7 coats but. Dries very quickly.mmwhen done right it seems to be a good alternative. EXCEPT it wants to stick the lid to the can so that it's REALLY hard to get the lid off. We have taken to breaking it up into smaller containers like plastic peanut butter jars, each with a little bit.

Another possible approach is to use POR15. It's another one part system. I just ordered some today so no experience yet, but have heard good things. They sell a 6 pack of small cans especially for touch ups. That makes a lot of sense.

2 years ago the Wife spent a lot of time grinding down on stanchion bottoms. Painted with Ameron 235, which is usually great stuff. But for some reason that batch didn't stick.

On a related issue, I redid the bottom of our 33 and had big over much of the bottom, even before launching. Agree way too much and redoing I've come to the working theory that I got some kind of pollution from a nearby refinery that messed with the paint adhesion.

So things that work today or here are no guarantee of success tomorrow or there. Unless you are in a controlled space, ha!

Hi all, have a question. I have a Carver 506, and the framing around he wing doors and windows, as well as the side exit doors, is painted aluminum. I'm assuming it is Imron, but not sure. Anyway, in some areas the paint is bubbling or has peeled off. How do I touch it up? Is it a DIY job, or should I hire it done? How do I find out what he color is so I can match it? Does it have to be sprayed on, or can I touch it up with a brush? Any advice/tips would be most appreciated!

You might try Interlux's forum, I've found them helpful and informative. They make a one and two part poly that should work.

The prep is 90% of the success or failure of the paint on aluminum..

Capt J

Capt J Senior Member

I wouldn't touch it up. If it's peeling in some area's, it will sooner than later peel in others. I would strip the entire door frame down to the bare metal. Apply the appropriate zinc chromate primer from the paint manufacturer you're going to use, then repaint the entire door frame.
See...someone has not read the proper prep steps...no wonder some paint jobs fail..YMMV

I too have this problem on my '99 404cpmy. Carver used AwlGrip at the time which has been reported to have had issues with peeling and bubbling. I am planning to do a DIY repair and hope for the best.

I would check with a coatings rep. The preferred method used to be an alodine conversion coat followed by an epoxy primer then a top coat. Is it peeling/bubbling around the fasteners or just random? I have not had to paint in about 25 years and I'm sure things have changed.
It is primarily around fasteners, but some other places, mostly sharp edges/corners
still not correct what has been posted...got Awlgrips site, download the instruction sheets and follow that..geeeeeeeeeeeee........I have been using the stuff on aluminum for over 20yrs..
I don't have a background in metals but I think is has something to do with dissimilar metals. It creates a white calcium looking material that has to be removed prior to priming. To answer your question, Imrom can be touched up with some degree of success. Henkel makes a conversion coat and should have information on its use. If you sand, prime and paint you should get a respectable job. You can wet sand and buff Imron with #1000 or #1500 if you want it to look "sprayed".

Hi, There must be a reason I have not seen it used on new builds for years. I will ask around, my paint guy who was briefly a YF Member sadly passed away so I am looking for someone who can help me with new projects. This can be an appraisal question

The procedure is basically as follows. Remove all old coatings down to bare alum. Be sure all imperfections or corrosion. is taken out Treat with Alum prep as per instruction sheet, rinse etc, dry then apply Alodine 1201, if there are bare patches of alum. that are not taking the alodine, those parts are not "clean" re clean etc . then you can prime coat with appropriate primer depending on what top coats you want to use, then fair out as need, if alum. re exposed after sanding, re clean as first step, re prime, re sand primer as required, wash thoroughly with reducer prior to topcoat, for real fussy jobs you may want to refill any shrinkage spots and re prime those tiny areas. Then maybe you can topcoat .

I have a 466 Carver (probably same paint) I called Carver and they hooked me up with Midwest Industrial Coatings and they mixed up factory paint for a perfect match. I had to by a quart minimum but they also sold it in a spray can format. Not cheap but mix was perfect! As said ealier, the aluminum must be prepped perfect or all will be for not!
Great tips. Thanks to all!

What is a touch-up.

A spot repair of a damaged or imperfect surface, without affecting the surrounding area or replacing the piece.

Touch-ups are becoming t he preferred option in the sector. When before it was only an option in time related, financial or extreme cases now it’s the go to option.

The quality of the r esults in combination with the speed and low cost have made touch-ups highly valued and demanded.

TOUCH-UP TECHNICIAN

Professionals from all sectors have their tricks and techniques which have been developed to solve all problems encountered. A carpenter will now how to hide a small defect in their furniture and a varnisher will do the same as he goes through his processes.

Our touch-up technicians are specialized in repairing all types of surfaces, finding daily solutions to specific problems drawing on a vast knowledge accumulated through years of experience. This allows us to hide superficial damage on multiple surfaces quickly, efficiently with a durable and high-quality finish.

OnboArt Yacht Touch Up Mallorca

  • THE CONCEPT of Yacht Touch Up Mallorca

From a natural or artificial stone to a piece of metal, paint, varnish, wood, natural or artificial leather, Corian, fabrics, glass, plastics etc…

On any surface there is a multitude of factors to consider. Shine, relief, colour, transparency, hardness, lighting, material, refraction, opacity, etc…

Any solid surface can be repaired, the important thing is knowing to what degree it can be improved, and if a touch-up is the right option

Yacht Touch Up Mallorca restoration services

  • OUR PHILOSOPHY

In doing a touch-up we affect the surface minimally with the minimum amount of material, manually and in a fraction of the time . Replacing a veneered faced bulkhead involves lots of materials, wood, glues, varnish, dissolvents and machinery. Then there’s the collateral waste of energy, extraction, fabrication, production and transport from its origin.

We could only be more sustainable by not doing the repair.

Call your dealer. They got my Steel gray non matte in a couple of days. One side of the pen is paint and the other side contains clear coat. Works very well.

The dealer said they don't have it keep calling back.

Start calling other dealers, yours obviously doesn't want the business!

Jim, I’m having the same issue. I already called two dealers and am waiting to hear back. There are some aftermarket paints on Amazon but I’m not sure I want to waste shipping and handling charges if they don’t match. Who knew yacht blue would be so hard to get since as one of the other guys mentioned it’s a color they seem to use on other vehicles.

Remove all loose paint, then sand the hard edges where the sound paint remains using 220-grit sandpaper; sand so there's a gradual transition between paint and bare metal. Next, clean the surface with solvent (avoid touching it after) and mask the area (the tape should bisect the area on the existing, sanded paint).
