Reader Boat: O'Day 192

By dave kautz.

Among a gathering of small boat sailors, it’s easy to start a heated discussion on just what is the “right-size” boat. One plausible suggestion is that the right size boat is one where the amount of time spent wishing the boat were larger is equal to the amount of time wishing the boat was smaller. After sailing our Potter 15 for six years and never wishing it was smaller, yet often wishing it would grow, Francesca and I began an earnest search for a boat with a bit more room. This new boat would have enough cockpit space for two couples, comfortably sleep the two of us and would have a practical option for either sex to answer nature’s call while on board.

Thankfully, the volume of a boat increases exponentially with length and it was soon evident that only a four foot or so increase in length would offer enough space to meet the objectives we had in mind. Boats in the 18 to 19-foot range typically weigh in at less than 2000 pounds, so towing with a family car having a tow capacity of 3000 pounds would still be practical.

o'day 192 sailboat

Most readers will already know there are many choices in this size range when one is looking at both the new and used boat markets. However, boats of this size are on the cusp of where designers decide that it is no longer practical to equip them with positive foam flotation. Being that the water of our local sailing venue—San Francisco Bay—is so cold that lengthy immersions, even with a life jacket on, are fatal, we wanted to restrict our choices to boats that wouldn’t disappear below the surface if holed or overturned.

This brought the choices down to just a few candidates, similar in most aspects but differing in ballast/keel configuration. Fixed wing keel? Shoal keel with centerboard? Swing keel? Retractable keel? Keel design will be argued in perpetuity, but we gravitated towards the shoal keel/centerboard as the best compromise between performance, stability, and easy launch and recovery.

So, by process of elimination, the boat that best met our objectives, as we had defined them, was the O’day 192, a C. Raymond Hunt Associates design which had a production run of about 500 boats between 1985 and ‘89. Since even the youngest candidate would be more than 16 years old, finding a good one could mean a long wait or a long drive.

As things turned out, it was only about five months before a used 192 turned up on craigslist located only 50 miles away. It wasn’t in as good condition as we would have liked, but it was complete and priced appropriately. With just a little haggling, it was ours.

o'day 192 sailboat

After our experience with the little P-15, the performance of the bigger boat seemed both sparkling and more secure at the same time. The O’day is nicely balanced with a light, precise helm, performs well over a broad range of wind speeds, and appears to have no bad habits. The unconventional setup of the jib (shared also with the O’day 222) receives criticism from some owners; the jib has a luff wire and is set flying (not hanked to the forestay), the necessary luff tension being provided by a halyard winch fitted to the mast. A small furling drum is attached at the tack of the sail and there is a swivel at the head. While this arrangement makes for quick rigging and easy sail changes, reefing the jib is not possible and the furling works easily only in light to moderate air. As the wind-speed rises above 15 knots we’ve found it is necessary to turn downwind and furl the jib while it is in the wind-shadow of the main to get it to roll up neatly.

o'day 192 sailboat

The interior of our boat had seen little use and was in nice shape. Accommodations are limited to two ample (7') settee berths and a shorter V-berth for kids up front. The V-berth has a section that removes to reveal a porta-potty with sitting headroom and there is a 36-quart cooler located below the companionway. For cooking aboard, we’ve been using an alcohol-burning camp stove that we set up on the bridgedeck. Located there it can be easily reached from either the cabin or the cockpit and is well ventilated.

Since our kids are all in their twenties, and more likely to borrow the boat for their own adventures than come with us, we replaced the V-berth cushions with Dri-dek and that area now provides ample storage space for our seabags, provisions, and even a pair of folding bikes!

o'day 192 sailboat

During the subsequent five years that we’ve had the boat the original sails and standing rigging have been replaced, a new 3.5 hp 4-stroke fitted and, most recently, we’ve added an asymmetrical spinnaker in an attempt to take our sailing skills to the next level.

True to its purpose as a trailersailer, in addition to extensive sailing on San Francisco Bay, our O’day has made visits to Catalina Island, Anacapa Island, Lake Havasu, Tomales Bay, Lopez Lake and has participated three times in the Cruiser Challenge at Monterey. We have had some truly great times thanks to this fine little craft and look forward to more in the future! There are moments when I wish she was a bit bigger down below and when I step that mast I always wish she was a little smaller so, perhaps, we really have found a boat close to the “right size” for us. • SCA •

So an O'Day 192 recently popped up for sale in my area. Naturally, I went about researching the boat and comparing it to others in the same price range, and I was shocked to find that there is next to no information about the boat. Does anyone know why this is? O'Day doesn't even have a wikipedia page that lists the models or has any information about the company. Some of the only information I could find was on the site iheartodays but even their information is limited.

One of the reasons, O'Day went out of business some years ago. Try Sailboatdata.com for info on just about any sailboat built in the past 40-50 years.

A Splendid tip! O'DAY 192 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

I was hoping for more information in the form of user experience, reviews, comparisons, etc... Rather than a bunch of numbers that basically don't mean anything to me

Sorry we couldn't help.

Try Odayowners.com. Maybe you can find something there.

Whole bunch of 192's on youtube. You should learn about the numbers someday. They are the information you need to know about your boat.

o'day 192 sailboat

from my experience after buying an O'day 19 this year. (haven't sailed it yet) not a ton of info out there, but the oday owners group mentioned above has been helpful. it does seem like a well built boat and I was able to purchase a manual for it. (really a few loose pages but it got me the info I needed) apparently the 192 has a larger cabin and more of a shoal keel with a drop down board, other than that, same boat as a 19.

O'day 192 Pages

September 17, 2010, I traded for a 1986 O'day 192. Its little smaller boat that will be easier for me to set up and sail single handed. The S2 would have been difficult to do that.

Its has a roller furler for the jib so only raising and lowering the main would require leaving the cockpit. She sailed really nicely in light wind the other evening on the test run I made with the previous owners.

This boat is a better fit for sailing on Clearfork reservoir and it will be much easier to trailer to other locations (Lake Erie here I come).

There are plenty of minor things to do to make it really nice, but what boat doesn't need things done?

The previous owners are very nice folks. They spent a lot of time showing me the ropes (that is more than likely a nautical phrase I think). I can't wait to sail her tomorrow. Yesterday, I ran the boat from the slip to the ramp and put the boat on the trailer and dropped the mast by myself. That was the first objective achieved of having a smaller boat. Today, I hung the mast diagonally in the garage and was able to close the garage door with the boat in the garage. That was the second objective. I like everything about this boat.

December 29, 2012

With some time available to read during the holidays, I've been reading Across Islands and Oceans at http://atomvoyages.com/books.html . I also read some today about the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. I noticed some towns on Lake Erie that I had not heard of before. This has incented me to make the following list of sailing goals for 2012: - Learn to heave to. - Sail on Lake Erie. - Stay overnight on the boat. - Practice MOB manuvers. - Sail to Amherstburg, ON, CA (this is a long shot for sure). I really need to find my wind vane. I don't know how I lost it. This is very frustrating. I also need to fix my VHF antenna (missing the set screw).

April 20, 2013

I just put the last week of June on my calendar for crusing the Erie canal. I've got to do it this year! I've been thinking of doing this for a couple of years. The latest issue of Sail magazine has an article about cruising the Erie. I've got to to do it. Connie says she is willing.

I received this e-mail from Chris: Hi Mark Thought I'd let you know I'm putting Testimony up for sale this weekend. We bought an 86 Catalina 22 in May in the Findley Lake NY area. I've been working on it since I brought it home, it wasn't in bad shape, but after owning Testimony I wanted to get it as close to her condition as I could. I really hate to let her go, love that boat, but we've spent a lot of weekends camping on her and decided we needed a bigger cabin. Just thought I'd let you know. I have a couple people from the sailing club we're in that are interested. I get lots of complements on how nice she is and I give you the credit and have them check out your web-site My Oday 192.

1986 O'Day 192

  • Description

Seller's Description

1986 O’Day 192 (19ft) with 2.2HP Mercury Outboard with internal tank (no fuel tank mess on deck). It also includes a 17 ft L’il Rider trailer that is about as old as the boat. Sails are original expect for the replacement hank jib. A roller furling system is included (would need to convert the hank to accept the rolling furler). There is a large colorful spinnaker as well. Brand new windows installed in 2018. I am only the second owner. Boat was professionally bottom painted at the beginning of 2019 as this boat was a fresh water boat all its life. Currently the boat is stored at the marina where I rent my slip in the summer in Forked River (Silver Cloud Harbor Marina). The boat is very responsive and sails quite well. It has a swing keel and a kick up rudder….which are both wonderful features on this boat, especially in Barnegat Bay. I never worry about the bottom. The boat is simply too small for our family of 5. We are moving up to a 30’ footer as we plan to use it somewhat like a shore home. This boat is particularly spacious for a 19 footer. It has cushions in the bow and two very long quarter berths which are in excellent shape. Has Lewmar winches that are working well. It is very well designed as anyone who is familiar with the O’Day 192 knows. This boat is ready to sail. This boat is in very nice condition as when I bought it, I wanted to sail, not work. This boat is “turnkey” so you can get on the water tomorrow….wooden rails need a little love and attention and it needs to have the wiring looked at…I don’t use the lights so I never bothered to repair it. I do have a new 5 HP Honda longshaft outboard that I used with the boat (20 hours), that engine is also available should you have any interest, I’m asking $1,000 for that…otherwise, the Mercury is included in the sale of the boat. I have the title for the boat in hand, the registration and origin paper for the trailer. This was my first boat and I enjoyed it tremendously as it was easy to handle…even when I was single-handed. Great boat for experienced or novice sailors. Cash Only.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

O'day 192 woes....all for not, but ty for the help We just purchased an '87 192. The boat is in good shape, it was owned by one family it's entire life. We bought the boat with a New Jersey title and registration, we live in PA. Transferring the title was easy, registering it is becoming a challenge. I am unable to find a capacity plate on the vessel. They need max. people, max. load, max. HP etc. Am I not looking in the right place for this information? Does anyone have this information for my boat? Thanks, Bill

Yeah, this is nothing compared to the trailer issues, but that is the Penn DOT vs. the Fish & Game Commission with the boat. We'll find a solution, one way or another. I have the document in that link, and the original owners manual. It seems the boat is incredibly complete, sans mast step pins. We'll continue to clean and fix the little stuff until big brother says we can put numbers on her. Thank you for your help. I'll try to get the appropriate (and expected) pics posted ASAP.

Well after a few phone calls and finding the people with some answers, I don't need a capacity plate. So much for Monday morning info..... Another call was to D&R to order the few missing parts from the boat. We should be ready to launch as soon as the registration arrives. For now it's elbow grease and touch ups, hopefully we can get her wet soon.

Unless you are a hardcore "racer", the O'Day 192 will be satisfying. The O'Day 19 is very close to the Rhodes 19. The O'Day 192 is just a little slower, but far from being sluggish. My primary sailboat is a Catalina Capri 22 which I keep in Winthrop MA.
