Hunting the northern lights from the ocean is an amazing experience; sailing away from the coastline of Reykjavik and seeing the aurora borealis out on the North-Atlantic ocean with beautiful mountains and the city in the background is something you won’t forget!

northern lights yacht tour

Tour description

We sail out from the Old Harbour in Reykjavik and in only 15-20 minutes we will be in a prime location away from the city lights, perfect for viewing the auroras! The guide will share with you facts on the science behind the magical phenomenon of the Northern Lights, and tell you about their stories & myths from different cultures around the world. The tour takes about 2-3 hours depending on how early/late the lights might appear.

We recommend putting on our  free overalls on-board (overalls also available in children’s sizes!) that will keep you nice and warm out on the deck, listening to what the guide has to say about the lovely colours dancing in the sky.

Throughout the tour we show our very own original  Northern Lights video , full of interesting facts and folklore! If you are cold you can grab a drink at the bar and cozy up inside watching the video or just simply enjoy the view of the city lights in the distance with your friends/family.

Special Tours Iceland app with 5 languages (English, German, French, Spanish and simplified Chinese) available for Android and Apple. It is available for all clients to download before or during the tour, with both text and audio information. The app is as close to an audio guided wildlife adventure as possible.

Useful tip:  We always have a crew member taking pictures throughout the night so instead of taking a long time figuring out the right settings for your camera, enjoy the moment and check our daily diary to see the photos! (If you are eager to learn we can also assist you in getting the settings right)

What's included

  • Guided boat tour
  • Warm overalls (overalls also available in children’s sizes!)
  • Wireless internet on board
  • Café/Bar & Souvenir shop
  • Our very own Northern Lights video
  • WCs on board!

Important information

We always try our best to give our passengers the best possible chance to see the Northern Lights – however, it is important to know that we can never guarantee sightings as this is a hunt for a natural phenomenon.

We use the weather forecast to find out the cloud cover on the night & the strength of the lights. We will always sail out when there is a chance of visibility as we do not want our passengers missing out on a chance to see the auroras.

We kindly ask you to be positive, embrace your patience and keep your fingers crossed!

Dress tip:  Dress according to Icelandic weather and don’t forget your hats & gloves. Our staff always does their best to keep the boat decks clear of ice/snow – but we do recommend wearing good shoes on the tour as the weather can change quickly.

Experience the Northern Lights in Ultimate Luxury aboard a Cruise

Prepare for an unforgettable adventure on the Northern Lights Luxury Cruise in Reykjavik. Don’t miss out on witnessing the magical Aurora Borealis while you’re in Iceland. Beyond its stunning landscapes and icebergs, Iceland offers the incredible display of the Northern Lights, a natural wonder that graces the skies above the Northern Hemisphere’s magnetic pole.

Discover the Wonders of the Aurora

Picture yourself under the night sky, captivated by the enchanting bands of neon green, blue, red, or even pink, gracefully dancing across the horizon. The ethereal display of these bands and their mesmerizing movement is truly a breathtaking sight. The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, represents the exquisite harmony of art and science. These luminous bands are the result of solar particles interacting with Earth’s magnetic field, occurring about 60 miles above the planet’s surface.

Embark on a Luxurious Northern Lights Adventure

Iceland is renowned as one of the best places to witness these dancing lights. Step aboard a cruise along the beautiful coastline to chase the Northern Lights. Enjoy a cozy evening sail, feeling the crisp ocean breeze and marveling at the starry night sky, all while anticipating the appearance of the Northern Lights. Trust us, the sight of the Aurora Borealis is absolutely worth the anticipation. You’ll have an up-close encounter with this marvel of nature, creating a once-in-a-lifetime memory. Departing from Reykjavík Old Harbour, the cruise lasts around 2.5 hours. Along the way, you’ll enjoy captivating sights, the nighttime beauty of the coastline, and of course, the mesmerizing lights against the dark backdrop of the sky. Remember to bundle up with warm clothing and head coverings, as the chilly wind can be quite intense.

Most frequent questions and answers

Pick up is available for extra charge. You need to book your pick up when booking the tour.

Due to regulations of Reykjavik City, tour companies are allowed to stop at certain designated bus stop locations in the city centre to pick up passengers. It is stated on your voucher whether we will pick you up directly from your accommodation or from the bus stop.

Pick up starts 45 minutes before the departure of the tour.

If the tour gets cancelled due to weather, you can choose between rescheduling the tour or receiving a full refund.

Free cancellation up to 1 day before the tour. If you cancel within 1 day notice, a 100% fee will be charged.

However, we always ask you to cancel the tour as soon as possible so we can adjust the schedule for the day depending on how many people will be joining the tour.

The Northern Lights are natural phenomena and we unfortunately cannot promise you will see them. Their appearance depends upon atmospheric and weather conditions.

However, we have experienced northern lights experts that will spend all day checking up on the aurora forecast to see where they are most likely to show up and how likley it is that they will show up.

If we don’t think the northern lights are likely to show up, we will cancel the tour and you can get a full refund or reschedule for another evening.

Yes, and you definitely should! The setting on the tour is full of amazing, scenic views.

This is, of course, a personal choice, we have often had pregnant women on our trips. This tour is listed as easy so if you do not feel uncomfortable going on a boat tour, this tour should be ideal for you.

If you are unfortunate enough to miss out on them on our tour, we offer you to rebook the Northern Lights Minibus tour free of charge on another evening of your trip.

Because of this, we recommend that you book the northern lights tour early on your trip to Iceland so you will be able to reschedule the tour if you don’t see the norhtern lights on your first attempt.

The northern lights guide can help you with setting up your camera so you can capture the northern lights.

You can also read the article about Northern Lights in Iceland or Capturing the Northern Lights be more specific on how to capture the northern lights on a photo.

Unfortunately, there isn’t just one simple answer to this question.

There isn’t just one single setting for your camera that ensures great photos.  But if you have manual options, you are probably best served with experimenting with various combinations of ISO, aperture, and exposure settings. As a rule of thumb, ISO setting between 800 and 3200, aperture between f/2.8 and f/5.6, and shutter speed at between 15 seconds and 30 seconds have proven effective.

A good thing to keep in mind, ISO setting between 800 and 3200, aperture between f/2.8 and f/5.6, and shutter speed between 15 seconds and 30 seconds have given great results.

Different combinations may give very different results. Higher ISO setting will allow you to capture faster exposures, but the downside to this might be for example grainier images.

If the shutter speed is above 15 seconds it will result in a slight star movement.

Wider angle lenses are usually more versatile in low light settings, but longer lenses give you different options for compositions. Make sure that you remove all lens filters, as they may distort images. You will probably get the best results with manual setting for infinite focal length

The Northern Lights season is from late August until mid-April. However, if you want to increase your chances of seeing them, it is best to wait until the clear winter months of mid-September until March.

No, it’s not necessary but it will increase your chances of getting the best view of the lights.

It can be hard to find where the northern lights are most likely to show up. The northern lights experts that will take you on the tours have years of experience when it comes to this. They will take you to the location where you are most likely to get the best possible view of the northern lights each night.

FAQ: Northern Lights

The auroras are made up of a series of electrically discharged particles from the sun that enter earth's magnetic shield and create a light when mixed with gasses (such as nitrogen and oxygen) in our atmosphere. The particles come a long way through space before being drawn into earth’s polar regions, although it only takes a couple of days to travel the full 150 million kilometres!

Northern Lights Luxury Yacht Cruise from Reykjavik

northern lights yacht tour

Description

Hop aboard this luxury Northern Lights yacht cruise which departs from Reykjavik.

We start the tour from the old harbour in Reykjavik, passing the Harpa concert hall, the sculpture Sun Voyager and the famous Höfði house, on our way beyond the islands of Videy and Engey.

When are far enough from the city lights and are clear from the light pollution from the city lights, we will slow down. From here our experienced crew will be on a constant lookout for the first signs of Northern Lights activity. Meanwhile, we enjoy the city lights in the distance, the view to the sky, constellations, maybe the Milky Way. From October 9th to December 8th, we also have the Imagine Peace Tower made by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. The light tower is also lit up during around Christmas time and on New Year's Eve.

The Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis) are by many considered one of the most beautiful natural phenomenons in the world. They are created as eruptions within the sun send out millions of tons of particles out to the sky. Some of these particles reach the Earth and collide with particles in our atmosphere, where they ignite and create the northern lights.

While waiting for the lights, we wrap up in blankets and enjoy drinks from the on-board bar or sit inside in the warm and cosy interior.

You will be very comfortable aboard. Our yacht, Harpa, was renovated in 2019. With lovely interior and an on-board bar, saloon, lounge, a flybridge with 360 views, and a kids corner. The yacht is very stable, and we limit the number of passengers on board to make sure it is comfortable for everyone.

Escape the crowds and join Harpa Yachts in this small group tour with fewer passengers, relaxed atmosphere and personnel service.

Select dates to check availability.

Attractions

Hofdi House is one of Reykjavik's most important historical landmarks.

What to bring

Good to know.

Our crew follows the daily weather forecast and a decision is made every day around 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. if we will be able to operate the tour in the evening. All passengers, hotels and booking offices will be notified via email.

We recommend to dress in warm clothes and according to conditions.

Humpback whale

DESCRIPTION

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a large baleen whale species belonging to the rorquals. Its head is broad and rounded when viewed from above, but slim in profile. The body is not as streamlined as other rorquals, but is quite round, narrowing to a slender tail. The body is black on the upper side, and mottled black and white on the underside. This colour pattern extends to the flukes, where the pattern is unique to each individual whale.

Humpback whales feed on krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans, and various kinds of small fish. Each whale eats up to 1 and 1/2 tons of food a day.

DISTRIBUTION

North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to their breeding grounds in the Caribbean. In the summertime, they frequent shallow waters around Iceland and come often into the fjords and bays in search of food. The population size in Icelandic waters is uncertain, but is estimated to be around 1,500-1,800 individuals.

Length: 13-17 metres

Weight: 25-40 tons

Worldwide population: 10,000-15,000

Life expectancy: 45-50 years

minkewhale_reykjavik_iceland_reykjaviksailors

Minke whale

The common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) is a baleen whale species belonging to the rorquals. Its body is counter-shaded-black to dark gray on top, white below. Some minkes have a light-coloured chevron on the back behind the head. Two areas of lighter gray appear on each side: one behind the flippers and another below and forward of the dorsal fin. Minke whales also have a characteristic white band on each flipper, contrasting with its very dark gray top colour. Like all baleen whales, the minke whale has 2 blowholes.

Minke whales feed primarily on krill in the southern hemisphere and on small schooling fish (capelin, cod, herring, pollock) or krill in the northern hemisphere.

The Icelandic minke whale population is estimated to be 50,000 – 60,000 animals.

Length: 7-10 metres

Weight: 8-10 tons

Worldwide population: Possibly 1,000,000

Life expectancy: About 50 years

Creating memories beneath the magical Aurora. Source: Arctic Adventures

Northern Lights are nature’s most jaw-dropping spectacle to date. They appear naturally when the sun's electric particles interact with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. This collision causes the glow!

This phenomenon is most visible near the magnetic poles in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Known as Aurora Borealis in the Northern Hemisphere, they are called Aurora Australis in the Southern Hemisphere. Together, they are often referred to as the polar lights .

You’ll easily recognize them. The lights look like waves or ribbons waving in the sky. Aurora Borealis colors , mainly green, red, and purple, perfectly contrast against the dark black background of the sky. It makes the spectacle look like a work of art.

The lights’ appearance depends a lot on weather conditions, solar activity, darkness, and location. Luckily, it’s common to see colorful light displays in Iceland, especially from September to April. The nights are dark and long, and the island is in the ideal spot, near a magnetic pole. You can track weather and aurora forecasts online or join a tour with guides who have years of experience in chasing the Aurora!

Explore more about the magical Northern Lights in Iceland and the science behind them.

Is it worth booking a Northern Lights Tour in Iceland?

Absolutely! Guided tours are led by expert guides who have experience looking for the auroras. They know the best places to visit and how to interpret forecast information accurately. On combo trips, you'll also enjoy some sightseeing along the way.

How much does it cost to see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

Our tours, designed to find the Northern Lights, start at just 12,990 ISK, or approximately 95 USD per person. For a unique experience, you can book a Super Jeep tour, which costs from 23,990 ISK or approximately 174 USD per person. We also offer more options to suit different budgets!

Can you see the Northern Lights from Iceland?

Yes, due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Iceland is the perfect destination to see the auroras. As Iceland is not densely populated, there is little light pollution. Even so, our tours always venture out from the cities to the countryside for optimal viewing.

Which is the best Northern Lights tour in Iceland?

Our most popular and highly rated Aurora tour is the Minibus Tour with Free Photos Included . You can also upgrade to a combo deal with the Aurora Museum, where you'll learn about the lights and get photography tips. Plus, you’ll save 10% when you book this combo and enjoy a convenient pick-up after the museum to chase the lights!

How to book a Northern Lights tour?

The easiest way to book a tour is through our website. Choose from our selection of tours and find the right one. Due to popularity, make sure to book your seat beforehand. Please remember that the Northern Lights appear from September to April. For a privately arranged Aurora tour or something more specific, please contact us directly .

Can I book a Northern Lights tour from Reykjavik?

Yes, the majority of our Northern Lights tours include pick-up and drop-off in the capital city. From there, you will be driven outside the urban area to see the lights. We also offer pick-ups from various locations in Iceland for private tours.

When and where can you see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

You can see Aurora Borealis in Iceland from September to April when the nights are darker and longer. The best chances are during December and January, when there are only four to five hours of sunlight each day. The best locations are outside of Reykjavik, such as Þingvellir National Park, Hvalfjörður, or the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you can escape artificial light.

Is Akureyri good for the Northern Lights?

Absolutely! The capital of North Iceland is ideal for viewing the ethereal glow. It’s not as developed as Reykjavik, so there won’t be a lot of light pollution. Our guided tour of Aurora in Akureyri will take you to the best viewpoints for the polar lights!

What to wear when hunting the Aurora?

Since you’ll be chasing the Northern Lights at night in winter, it’s essential to dress warm. Make sure to wear comfortable layers, including an undershirt, a fleece sweater, and a jacket on top. Don’t forget to include thermal underwear or leggings for extra warmth!

What are the best camera settings for photographing the Aurora Borealis?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer since capturing the auroras takes some trial and error. Be ready to try different settings on your camera. Bring extra batteries, and consider using a tripod to stabilize your shots. For more tips and detailed settings, check out our tips for shooting the Aurora Borealis .

Will my guide take pictures for me?

Yes, the guide will take a photo of you with the Northern Lights behind you. These can be single or group photos and are free of charge. They will be available online after the tour.

Will I definitely see the lights on the tour?

The Northern Lights are natural phenomena and we unfortunately cannot promise you will see them on our tours. Your chances of seeing them depend on a number of factors that are out of our control, including weather conditions and atmospheric factors.

How do I know if the Northern Lights tour is on for the evening?

You can check the Aurora activity predictions with information about the metrics that determine their visibility. If the activity level is high and the skies are clear, the tour is likely to go ahead. We will update our website’s tour departure information by 17:00 at the latest, and if your tour is canceled for any reason, you’ll receive an email notifying you of the details.

What are my options if my tour is canceled?

When Northern Lights tours are canceled, it’s usually due to unfavorable weather conditions.

In that case, your options will be to:

  • Reschedule for another day.
  • Find another tour to embark on and use the deposit for it.
  • Get fully refunded.

Please contact our Customer Care team to re-book your tour.

What if my Northern Lights tour goes ahead and the Aurora isn’t seen?

A refund is not available if the Northern Lights tour goes ahead and none are seen. However, we offer the opportunity to join another Northern Lights minibus tour free of charge. This offer is valid for three years, giving you plenty of time to try again!

Please contact our Customer Care Team to re-book your tour.

Best Times to Take a Northern Lights Tour in Alaska

Timing is everything when it comes to seeing the Northern Lights in Alaska. The aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon that requires specific conditions to be visible, so planning your trip during the right time of year is crucial.

Best Months: Late August to Mid-April

The Northern Lights are best viewed during Alaska’s long, dark nights, which typically fall between late August and mid-April. This period offers the optimal combination of dark skies and the increased auroral activity that comes with the longer nights. During summer, Alaska’s midnight sun makes it virtually impossible to see the aurora, so it’s important to plan your trip outside of this season.

  • Late August to September : Early in the season, you can still enjoy milder weather and some summer activities during the day. The nights are getting longer, providing a good chance to see the lights. However, the skies may not be as dark as in the heart of winter, which can slightly reduce visibility.
  • October to November : As fall turns to winter, the skies grow darker, and the chances of seeing the aurora increase. This is a great time to visit if you want to avoid the coldest temperatures of the Alaskan winter while still having a high probability of seeing the lights.
  • December to February : These are the peak months for Northern Lights viewing. The nights are longest and darkest, giving you the best chances to catch the aurora. However, be prepared for the cold. Temperatures can plunge well below freezing, especially in interior regions like Fairbanks. Despite the cold, this period offers the highest likelihood of clear skies and intense auroral activity.
  • March to Mid-April : As winter starts to fade, the days begin to lengthen, but there’s still plenty of darkness for aurora viewing. The weather is also slightly warmer, making it a more comfortable time for outdoor activities. This is a popular time for travelers who want to combine Northern Lights viewing with other winter sports like dog sledding or snowmobiling.

Green Northern Lights in winter scenery.

Nightly Timing: Midnight to 3 AM

The best time of night to see the Northern Lights is typically between midnight and 3 AM. During these hours, the sky is at its darkest, which enhances the visibility of the aurora. However, the lights can sometimes be visible as early as 10 PM or as late as 6 AM, depending on solar activity and local conditions.

To maximize your chances, consider joining a guided tour that operates during these peak hours. Many tours are designed to take you to the best viewing spots and often include warm shelters where you can wait comfortably until the lights appear.

Solar Activity: The 11-Year Solar Cycle

The Northern Lights are tied to solar activity, which follows an 11-year cycle of peaks and troughs. During periods of high solar activity, known as solar maximum, auroras are more frequent and vibrant. The next solar maximum is expected around 2025, which means the coming years will be especially good for aurora viewing. Even during solar minimum, you can still see the Northern Lights in Alaska, but they may be less intense.

Weather Considerations

Clear skies are essential for seeing the Northern Lights, so keep an eye on the Aurora weather forecast . Cloud cover can obscure the aurora, even during periods of strong solar activity. Many guided tours offer flexibility with timing or location based on real-time weather conditions to increase your chances of seeing the lights.

How to Prepare for a Northern Lights Tour in Alaska

Preparing well for your Northern Lights tour ensures you stay comfortable and increase your chances of seeing the aurora. Here’s how to get ready:

Dress for the Cold

Alaska’s winter nights are freezing, so dress in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base, add an insulating middle layer, and top it with a waterproof, windproof outer layer. Don’t forget insulated gloves, a warm hat, and thermal socks. Waterproof boots with good traction are essential.

Bring Essential Gear

  • Camera : If photographing the lights, bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual settings, a wide-angle lens, and a sturdy tripod.
  • Headlamp : A headlamp with a red light helps you navigate in the dark without disturbing your night vision.
  • Extra Batteries : Cold weather drains batteries quickly, so bring spares and a portable charger.

Know What to Expect

Prepare for long, cold nights with possible waiting. Clear skies are crucial, so check weather forecasts. Use aurora tracking apps to monitor solar activity and know when the lights are most likely to appear.

Stay Comfortable

Choose tours that offer comfortable vehicles, or heated shelters or cabins. Bring snacks, water, and something to entertain yourself while waiting, like music. Adjusting to Alaska’s time zone can help you stay alert during peak viewing hours, typically around midnight.

You’ll be taken to a location away from city lights, where you can watch the aurora in comfort. Many tours provide heated shelters or even cabins where you can wait until the lights appear.

These tours provide a full-day or multi-day experience that includes activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, or visiting hot springs, followed by aurora viewing in the evening.

  • What to Expect : Spend your day exploring Alaska’s winter wonderland with thrilling activities, and then settle in for a night of aurora watching. These tours often include meals, gear rental, and sometimes accommodations. Popular options include dog sledding under the stars or soaking in the Hot Springs while waiting for the lights to appear.

Multi-Day and Overnight Tours

Multi-day and overnight Northern Lights tours are perfect for those who want a more immersive experience. These tours take you deep into the Alaskan wilderness, where light pollution is minimal, and your chances of seeing the aurora are maximized.

  • What to Expect : You’ll stay in remote lodges, cabins, or even geodesic domes designed for aurora viewing, complete with clear roofs or large windows. These tours often include meals, guided activities during the day, and plenty of opportunities to see the Northern Lights each night. Some tours venture north of the Arctic Circle, offering a chance to experience the extreme beauty of Alaska’s winter landscapes.

Luxury Aurora Tours

For travelers seeking a high-end experience, luxury Northern Lights tours offer exclusive and personalized options. These tours often include private guides, premium accommodations, and additional amenities such as gourmet meals, spa services, and private transportation.

  • What to Expect : Enjoy the Northern Lights in style with a luxury tour that might include staying in a remote, five-star lodge or a private cabin with panoramic views of the sky. Some luxury tours also offer private flights over the Arctic Circle, giving you a unique aerial perspective of the aurora.

What Happens if the Lights Don’t Appear?

Seeing the Northern Lights is a dream for many travelers, but the reality is that the aurora is a natural phenomenon and can be unpredictable. Even during peak season and in prime locations, there’s no absolute guarantee that the lights will appear on any given night. So, what happens if you don’t see the lights during your tour?

Flexible Tour Policies

Many reputable tour operators understand the unpredictability of the Northern Lights and offer flexible policies to increase your chances of seeing them.

  • Rescheduling : Depending on the operator and their availability, you might be offered the chance to reschedule for another night if the lights don’t show up on your tour. That is why it’s worth booking your tour at the beginning of your trip and staying in the area at least for 2-3 nights.
  • Free Rebooking : Some tour companies allow you to join another tour for free if the lights don’t appear. This is often subject to availability and can be a great option if you have multiple nights in the area.
  • Discounted Second Tour : Others may offer a discounted rate for a second attempt, giving you another chance to catch the aurora without paying full price again.
  • Alternative Activities : Many tours include additional activities such as dog sledding, hot springs visits, or cultural experiences, so you’ll still have a memorable time even if the aurora doesn’t show.

The Best Northern Lights Tours in Alaska: Final Thoughts

Chasing the Northern Lights in Alaska is an adventure like no other, offering the chance to witness one of nature’s most stunning displays. For first-time visitors or those with limited time, we highly recommend taking a guided Northern Lights tour. These tours are especially beneficial if you’re new to exploring Alaska, particularly during the challenging winter months from September to April.

For Chris and me, the best area to experience the Northern Lights is Fairbanks and its surrounding regions. Fairbanks offers some of the most reliable aurora sightings, thanks to its location and clear skies. If you’re looking for an adventure, we suggest heading up to the Arctic Circle, where the remote and dark skies provide an incredible backdrop for the lights. For those who prefer to relax while waiting for the aurora, Chena Hot Springs is a perfect choice, combining a soothing soak in natural hot springs with a chance to see the Northern Lights.

Guided tours provide expert knowledge, safety, and comfort, ensuring you’re in the best possible spot to see the aurora. They also handle the logistics, allowing you to focus on the experience rather than worrying about navigating unfamiliar terrain or dealing with harsh weather conditions.

Whether it’s your first time or you’re looking to make the most of a short visit, a guided tour is the best way to increase your chances of catching the aurora and to fully enjoy your Alaskan adventure. With the right preparation and guidance, your Northern Lights experience in Alaska will be nothing short of extraordinary. Some Photos Credits: Canva Pro and Pixabay.

Visit Idaho logo

Where to Find the Northern Lights in Idaho

Table of contents, can you see the northern lights in idaho, when is the best time to see the northern lights in idaho, where can you see the northern lights in idaho.

Craig Goodwin worked in partnership with Visit Idaho to create this Travel Tip.

Seeing the northern lights is a bucket-list experience that leads many to take long journeys to Iceland and Alaska, but a trip to northern Idaho , along with persistence and a little luck, is all it takes to check that box off the list. Many don’t know that you can see the aurora so close to home, and even fewer realize that the dark skies and vast horizons of Idaho make it one of the best places for such an encounter.

While energy released from the sun can light up the Earth’s atmosphere at any time of year, getting the right conditions to see it can be a challenge. Here are some key insights to help find success on your own adventure to see the northern lights in Idaho.

The northern lights from Priest Lake in Idaho.

The biggest challenge is anticipating when the aurora will be active enough to see in Idaho. Scientists measure the intensity of the lights on a Kp index of geomagnetic activity, and there are dozens of forecast models that give anticipated Kp readings for a given day. The 27-day forecast by the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska is a good place to start. The key is to look for a forecasted Kp of four or higher.

Just like a weather forecast, sometimes they get it wrong, and the lights don’t show up as anticipated. I’ve learned over the years that persistence pays off, and faithfully looking for the right conditions will lead to success. Seek out dark skies, free from the glow of city lights, and plan trips when there is no moonlight to compete with the aurora. The week before or after a new moon is ideal. Pay close attention to the weather to ensure cloud-free skies. The Clear Sky Chart website is a great source for this information.

I’ve also learned that even if the lights are a no-show, the worst outcome is spending a majestic night under the stars.

The northern lights over Priest Lake in Idaho.

If the lights are active, they will become visible around two hours after sunset. At first, they appear as a dull glow hovering on the horizon, but as it gets darker and eyes acclimate, there are visible columns of light that ebb and flow in the sky. As the aurora intensifies, it looks like the universe is doing the wave, a cosmic stadium of vertical light rays rising and falling in mysterious symmetry.

Unfortunately, the human eye cannot see the vibrant colors present in the lights, but a digital camera on a tripod picks them up with stunning clarity. Don’t be afraid to give it a try with a wide-angle lens of 24mm to 14mm, focus set to infinity, at f2.8 to f4, ISO 3200 and a shutter speed of 10 to 20 seconds. Photos can make an aurora encounter that much more memorable. The only problem is that this may further contribute to an unhealthy obsession with the next chance to see them.

In addition to following the tips above, the best time to see the northern lights in Idaho at their most spectacular is between September and March.

After years of stalking the lights, I’ve identified some ideal locations to consider for a northern Idaho aurora adventure.

The northern lights over Chatcolet Bridge in Idaho.

Heyburn State Park on Chatcolet Lake, near Plummer and St. Maries, has great views to the north, especially from the nearby Trail of the Coeur d’Alene’s bridge.

Another place where you can see the northern lights in Idaho is Schweitzer . The resort not only has mountain peaks with spectacular views, but they will also take you to the top of the ski lift in summer. After an evening of hiking the Selkirks and picking huckleberries, you can stick around for nature’s light show.

The northern lights over mountains at Schweitzer.

Moscow doesn’t have the mountain peaks of its northerly neighbors, but the rolling Palouse plains provide open vistas to the north. A simple night drive along U.S. 95 north of Moscow may be all that’s needed to witness a display of the aurora.

Priest Lake, in far-northern Idaho, has been my most reliable and rewarding location for viewing the northern lights. Hill’s Resort has a clear view, with sandy beaches and fire pits that make waiting for the aurora almost as enjoyable as the show itself. They are usually amenable to turning off the lights of the marina for night-sky enthusiasts. The nearby beach in front of the Priest Lake Museum is another good location where you can see the northern lights in Idaho.

A man sitting on the beach watching the northern lights at Hill’s Resort.

Wherever the quest for the lights takes you, make sure to be safe. Go in groups, especially if hiking at night, and bring headlamps, extra batteries, warm layers and bear spray.

Encounters with the aurora borealis can be astonishing in their beauty and mystery, and it’s understandable that people spend thousands and travel far and wide for the experience. Thankfully in Idaho, all it takes is a strategic road trip, some extra caffeine to stay awake and a little luck to have the night of a lifetime.
