Specializing in premium craftsmanship of some of the largest super sailing yacht builds in the world, Perini Navi’s continuous evolution in the design, engineering and construction of superyachts in aluminum and has made them the market leader in the large, custom super sailing yacht sector. For more than three decades, Perini Navi has influenced the concept of the modern sailing yacht and has become well known for its innovative yacht designs. Their success is in part to its in-house design team and facilities to build their own special sail system of alloy masts. In fact, all Perini Navi’s sail controls, masts and rigging are developed and manufactured in-house.

Perini Navi Heritage

The Perini Navi Group, which today comprises four companies, offers luxury racing and cruising sailing yachts and in 2007 launched a sister division with a series of large motor yachts. Perini Navi was originally founded by Fabio Perini in 1983 in Viareggio, Italy. Unable to find a large sailing yacht that he could operate single handed, Fabio created a company to design and engineer his own vessel and launched a prototype sailing yacht with ample living space that could be sailed with a reduced crew. That yacht is still sailing the high seas today, going by the name of Elettra. Today Elettra boasts enhanced sailing and operating mechanical systems similar to the ones found on the new generation of Perini Navi yachts. She is petite compared with Perini’s greatest achievement, the MALTESE FALCON, but having been put to the test in 35+ knots of wind, Elettra can more than hold her own at the annual Perini Navi Cup in Sardinia.

For the Adventurous at Heart

By 1988 the company was building its own designs and had developed a computerized sail-handling system that enabled the sails to be furled and unfurled with the push of a button. In 2017, Fabio Perini opened the share capital of Perini Navi to new investors and with Fenix Srl, the holding company of the Italian Tabacchi family, Perini Navi’s two brands, Perini Navi and Picchiotti, merged into one.

Along with the original Perini headquarters in Viareggio, the Italian company comprises facilities in La Spezia, Italy, Tuzla, Turkey and a charter and sales division based in New England’s Rhode Island. The main shipyard and central offices in Viareggio produce the majority of the group’s two lines – the Racing Line and the Fast Cruising Line. The Perini Navi series of motor yachts, which were previously built under the Pichiotti name, are produced in the La Spezia shipyard, where there are 230-foot (70m) hangars, two travel lifts and 164-foot (50m) piers. The group’s metalworking division is in Yildiz, Turkey, and has a space for hull and superstructure construction. It was here that special projects such as the ground breaking MALTESE FALCON was created in 2006. With three masts with curvilinear spars, naval architecture by Gerald Dijkstra and Partners, and interior design by Ken Freivokh Studio, the 300-foot (88m) MALTESE FALCON was the first of its kind to be seen on the market with the revolutionary sailing system ‘the Falcon Rig’. Since then Perini Navi have been responsible for the build of iconic vessels the likes of the 196-foot (60m) PERSEUS 3, which features the tallest carbon fiber mast ever built and the biggest downwind sail area on a yacht thanks to her unique bowsprit. Most recently Perini Navi have presented models from both its sailing and motor yacht series – E-Volution and Argonaut respectively – that make up part of its enhanced range.

To date the Perini Navi Group has constructed over 59 sailing yachts ranging from 80-feet (25m) to 300-feet (88m) in length, and four motor yachts ranging from the 83-foot (25m) ECO-TENDER to the 240-foot (73m) NAUTILUS (formerly GRACE E). They have another four super sailing yachts and two motor yachts currently under construction.

Perini Navi has attracted numerous famous owners and has won countless awards for their quality builds and innovative projects (close to 70 awards at last count).

The Perini Navi Group also offers clients a selection of service and refit facilities from the shipyards in La Spezia and Viareggio, as well as by Rybovich in the U.S.

Renowned for their high quality craftmanship and interior finish, exceptional comfort and seakeeping, Perini Navi builds are amongst some of the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. 73 meter Picchiotti motor yacht Grace E

  • 3 minute read
  • July 22, 2015

Delivered in 2014,  Grace E  is a notable milestone for Perini Navi Spa as the largest motor yacht to have been delivered to date and the flagship of the Picchiotti motor yacht line. Following on the heels of her smaller siblings, the 50m Exuma and 55m Galileo G, Grace E pushes the envelope of comfort, quality and eco-performance to a new level in the world of mega yachting.

A floating palace

Grace E ’s naval architecture and styling was conceived by Philippe Briand under his Vitruvius design concept. A visionary and highly successful racing sailboat designer Briand was able to deliver a hull with uncompromised efficiency for a vessel of her size by utilizing a maximum waterline length, a low drag underwater hull shape and a powerful and highly economical diesel/electric power plant.

The interior of Grace E is highly refined by interior designer Remi Tessier. The owners had a clear design brief calling for a contemporary yet warm, casually chic interior.

Natural lighting, artistic use light wood grains, and finishes of leather, parchment, onyx, stainless steel and high gloss ebony are the palette Remi draws from. The highly sensual interior design and assiduous use space create a layout that is extremely functional yet supremely elegant.

The owners cabin on the main deck is a grand suite comprised of a total of 90 sq m. It is finished with sandblasted and bleached Sycamore panels “polished as if the wind, sand and sea had produced their texture”. The floors are bleached Wenge and silk carpet. Overheads are a matt finished Palladium leaf pattern and Sycamore panels.

The 12/14 guests are accommodated in 6 additional staterooms. There are two VIP guest cabins on the main deck, 2 king size staterooms and 2 twin berth (with Pullman) staterooms on the lower deck which can convert to VIP suites through connecting doors.

Grace E  also features a Wellness deck – with over 238 sq m of interior and exterior space completely dedicated to wellness and spa activities including a 4 person Jacuzzi, massage room, beauty parlor, exercise arcade, steam bath and Hydrotherapy room with sauna, cold water plunge and jet bath.

In addition there is a forward facing observatory lounge overlooking the bow to relax when done at the spa. From the Remi Tessier design collection are four swiveling sun beds with integrated retractable hoods, two forward of the observation lounge and two aft adjacent to the Jacuzzi. There is also a variable speed endless pool situated on the main deck aft with two larger sun pods. In short : the perfect place to unwind !

On the upper deck, there is over 170 sq m of open space evenly divided between an inside saloon and outside deck lounge. The two areas communicate through a massive 8m sliding glass door essentially creating one large open air lounge. Highlighting the space is a Carrara marble top signature Sushi bar, a huge U-shaped settee, two drop down entertainment display screens, outside dining table, 2 card tables and wraparound sun settee aft.

A feature made popular on board the Perini Navi sailing yachts, the aft cockpit on  Grace E allows for relaxation in a slightly recessed and therefore protected lounging area adjacent to the aft deck with bar and informal dining. Owners and guests are exposed to wide open exterior spaces with unencumbered panoramic views of the surroundings.

To top it all off, Grace E  carries 4 tenders, all stowed under deck in tender bays, and assorted water toys which are deployed from a huge 113 sq m aft garage/beach club through side shell doors.

The design reference for Grace E  was to create a yacht that is in harmony with the elements both in form and function. It is readily apparent that Grace E has met and surpassed this test at every level.

Using its hydrofoils lift the hull above the waves, this truly unique vessel offers a new and superior ride. Coexist with the vastness of the ocean or calm of our lakes and explore with no bounds on board the world's longest range electric boat. Minimal wake leaves no shoreline impact and fully electric propulsion keeps surrounding air and water clean.

N30 is futuristic yet classic, combining luxury and high utility without compromising on performance. The futuristic multivariable day boat is perfect for fishing, water skiing, family outings and service as a unique yacht tender.

6 future superyacht trends

navi e yachts

Article written by BOAT International Published on September 3, 2024

Advanced technology, innovative design concepts and a growing emphasis on sustainability are just some of the ways in which superyachts are continuing to evolve, and staying ahead of these emerging trends is crucial for designers, builders and enthusiasts alike. Looking at some of today’s stand-out features, we offer a glimpse into what could define the next generation of superyachts.

Responsive design As technology expands and develops, there is a growing trend for designers looking to intertwine art with technology. Responsive design, also known as immersive art, has been a big talking point in the industry recently.

A major project which caught attention back in 2020 was 107.2-metre Luminosity’s 370-square-metre interactive LED walls, designed by Zaniz Studio. Since then, responsive design has become ever more popular on board, with Perini Navi’s 46.5-metre ArtExplorer showcasing a 16-metre cinematic tunnel whose walls are wrapped in LED light installations.

Currently, responsive design plays with movement and light but in the future, we might see the trend encompass touch, smell and temperature.

Nature takeover We’re already seeing a shift towards yacht designs that champion an improved connection to the water – like the open aft deck on the Benetti Oasis models or the underwater viewing lounges on board 83.5-metre Savannah and 75-metre M’Brace.

The next phase may see greenery make more of an appearance on board. A recent nature-focused project that stole the spotlight was Heesen’s 67-metre Sparta, its three decks symbolising the elements of water, earth and air.

Interior restyling During and after the pandemic, we saw a significant spike in yacht usage among both owners and charterers, with some spending weeks at a time at sea.

Based on this, we might expect to see people readjust their attitude toward their yachts by focusing less on wow factor and more on comfort and liveability. Instead of grand pianos, elaborate dining saloons and disused Jacuzzis, owners may opt for additional offices, larger gym areas or cosy media rooms.

Central to this ethos is Nuvolari Lenard’s 202-metre Centerfold concept, a design that evokes feeling, according to the studio, rather than purely aesthetics. Interior styling is also shifting towards neutral tones and comfortable furnishings as opposed to cool, contemporary themes designed for dazzling, rather than living.

The power of artificial intelligence It’s no doubt that AI is beginning to weave its way into many industries, and this is no different in the world of yacht design.

Over the past year, we have seen various shipyards and designers embrace AI in order to enhance the guest experience on board. Azimut was one of the first with the installation of smart home automation on board the Magellano 60.

More recently, Rossinavi harnessed the power of AI to maximise environmental efficiency on board the 43-metre hybrid-electric Seawolf X. Whilst AI is still in its infancy, the industry has so far proven that the technology can be useful in numerous ways on board, and we can expect this evolve rapidly in the coming years.

Explorer-style amenities Alongside strong demand for explorer yachts we’ve also seen an uptick in trend for explorer-style features, even on regular superyachts.

Holterman’s 32.6-metre Lady Fleur is a good example of this, incorporating a hydraulic aft platform that doubles as a tender bay and swimming pool. Warming firepits, larger toy lockers and toy-carrying aft decks are becoming more commonplace, with Wider’s 49.9-metre Stern able to house a submersible.

In keeping with that theme, yachts may start to get more rugged and functional in appearance – something that’s highlighted by the booming in the popularity of conversion superyachts.

Glass galore The use of glass has grown in the past few years, with more designers beginning to use it for aesthetic purposes as well as functional ones.

We’ve also seen it become more frequently used for structural purposes too, as the material becomes more durable and easier to work with.

From Feadship’s 77.2-metre Pi’s glass-clad saloon to Oceanco’s 90-metre Dar’s glossy glass exterior, it’s making a big appearance on the exterior. In the future, we may start to see glass introduced more heavily on the interior as well.

Sailboat Review: Dufour 41

  • By Herb McCormick
  • September 17, 2024

Dufour 41

When it comes to a discussion of the great European naval architects of contemporary times—and it’s a long list, indeed—certain names immediately pop to mind. Many are French. Philippe Briand made his mark creating boats for a roster of production builders (Baltic, Jeanneau, CNB) before pivoting to the superyacht set (Perini Navi, Royal Huisman). Jean-Marie Finot was more or less the father of an era of the best Vendée Globe solo round-the-world racers ever to compete in that grueling contest. Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP Design) are the current masters of offshore multihulls. The talented tandem of Jean Berret and Olivier Racoupeau are ubiquitous as the creators of many French brands, and sit at the forefront of their profession.

To me, however, one of the more underrated European design mavens, and one who definitely belongs in that rarefied grouping, is Umberto Felci. While Felci was born in Milan and still operates from his base in Italy, I’ve always considered him a huge influence in French boatbuilding—largely because of his longtime association with Dufour Yachts, where he’s been the principal designer for some 15 years.

During that time, I’ve sailed many a Felci boat, as he’s been a consistent presence in Cruising World ’s annual Boat of the Year contest . He has won multiple times with his Dufour entries, including the 560 Grand Large (2014), the 382 Grand Large (2015), and the 520 Grand Large (2018). All of these Grand Large boats shared a similar DNA, and the Dufour booths at the major boat shows were easily recognizable for their similar lines and matching beige canvas dodgers and sail covers. The only huge difference across the fleet was their respective sizes.

All that changed in a big way in 2019, after the Fountaine Pajot group acquired Dufour and decided to make each new offering a singular model in form and styling. Which brings us to Felci’s newest design, the Dufour 41.

Dufour 41

Aesthetically, it’s safe to say that the bright-blue Dufour 41 at this past year’s Annapolis Sailboat Show in Maryland was one of the more distinctive-looking yachts on display. It has a rounded bow, ample beam, and not one but two chines, both carried almost the entire length of the boat—one just above the waterline, another just below the reverse sheer line, which is accentuated by prominent molded bulwarks. This boat looks and feels much larger than its 41 feet length overall. Forward, an integrated bowsprit for the ground tackle and the tack point for the asymmetric kite heightens the futuristic vibe. As does the series of three sleek windows in the hull (along with the additional pair of windows overhead in the coachroof). There is not a stick of timber to be found anywhere.

Topsides, the combination of wide side decks and outboard shrouds makes for easy egress when moving forward or aft. The emphasis on “outdoor living” is underscored by a generous cockpit with twin wheels (but, as with all Dufours, a single rudder, which makes backing down easier and with more control). There’s also wraparound seating, including a cushioned daybed, as well as a drop-down transom, which doubles as the porch/platform for the barbecue well aft. All this is revolved around a table—a pretty sweet, comfortable layout that lends the impression of lounging aboard a much bigger boat.

All the related equipment is first-rate. There’s B&G instrumentation, including the chart plotter and autopilot; a Quick vertical windlass with helm controls for the Delta anchor; and a Side-Power (Sleipner) bow thruster, which I reckon is a luxurious touch on a 41-footer. Our test boat was set up with a nice set of Elvstrøm sails, including a traditional mainsail (an in-mast furling mainsail is available) with a cool stack-pack arrangement that tucks into itself and is secured with shock cords. For our Boat of the Year trials, we test all the emergency rudders, and the one on the 41 was exceptional.

Construction is straightforward and robust. The hull is vacuum-infused with solid glass below the waterline and a foam core above. There are a pair of molded-in channels for the plumbing and electrical wiring. The plywood bulkheads are laminated to the hull. The keel is cast iron. And, as with every Dufour going back to the company’s origins, a wine rack is stashed under the floorboards.

Ardizio Design is responsible for the belowdecks accoutrements, accommodations and floor plan. Its team used those aforementioned chines and, more specifically, the voluminous interior that the chines created, to wide advantage. As with Dufour’s other models, there are three packages of features, trim and equipment—on the 41, these are labeled Adventure, Ocean and Performance—depending on how the boat will be used (basic sailing, dedicated cruising or racing). With the 41, there are also two interior options: either three or four staterooms. Both have a straight-line galley to starboard, with the dining table and wraparound settee to port.

Dufour 41 galley

Our test boat had the three-stateroom layout, with a spacious master forward and a pair of double-berth staterooms aft. It also had three heads, which, to be honest, seems like a bit of overkill on a 41-foot boat. The second head, in the center of the boat, can be replaced with stowage, which is the setup I’d prefer.

The 41 sports a double-spreader rig with swept-back spreaders and a self-tacking jib. The double-ended German-style mainsheet, anchored at midboom, is easily trimmed with a pair of electric winches (an optional electric winch for the mainsail is available). There’s no traveler; after all, this is a cruising boat.

Under power, the 50 hp Volvo Penta with a saildrive configuration had us zipping along at better than 6 knots. This was one of the quieter boats, decibel-wise, in the 2024 fleet. But we were all itching to hoist the sails, and we were not disappointed. At first, in a fitful breeze that was just filling in, we still made over 5 knots in 6 to 8 knots of wind. Soon enough, the pressure built into the 10- to 12-knot range, just in time to hoist the boat’s big asymmetric kite. On a tight reach, we made an effortless 7.5 knots, and the helm was just delightful, with only a light three-finger touch required for full control.

The new Dufour 41 from Dufour Yachts shipyard, in Palma

Those Grand Large prizewinners from years past were, of course, all Felci designs. While this new Dufour looks absolutely nothing like its older siblings, it sails just as well, if not better. Felci may have changed the recipe under the company’s new regime, but he hasn’t forgotten that what we really want is pretty simple: We want to go for a fine sail.

Did You Know?

French boatbuilders were pioneers in fiberglass-sailboat manufacturing. Naval architect/engineer Michel Dufour joined their ranks in 1964 with the launching of the Sylphe, a radical (for its time) 21-foot pocket cruiser with a masthead rig and fin keel with attached ballast bulb. More than 400 were built in a 10-year production run.

Dufour has ramped up its introduction of new models in the past five years, and now has nine in production ranging from 37 to 61 feet, with a 44-footer on tap to be introduced in the United States this fall. Of that collection, the company’s 41, 470 and 530 are all available with electric auxiliary-propulsion options.

Dufour has laid out an aggressive growth strategy, planning to introduce two models each year for the next several years, and replacing its entire fleet within four years. As for the 41, a company representative said that about a third of the run will go to private owners, a third will be purchased by charter operators, and a third will go into charter-management programs.

Perini Navi 42m Project E-volution yacht arrives in Viareggio

The first 42 metre hybrid sailing yacht in  Perini Navi's  E-volution line has arrived in Italy to complete construction. The yacht has been transferred to the yard's Viareggio facility after beginning construction in Turkey. It is scheduled for a 2020 delivery.

It comes after the yacht hit the water for the first time earlier this month, alongside the yard's  25 metre all aluminium Eco Tender . The sailing yacht was sold to an “expert and enthusiastic” Italian owner in July last year and first announced at the Monaco Yacht Show 2017 .

The in-house design is built entirely from aluminium and features a lifting keel and naval architecture by the Reichel-Pugh studio .

It also features a 2,367 square metre sailplan and includes a carbon fibre rig. The yacht’s exterior styling comes from Perini Navi’s head of design Franco Romani.

The yacht is the first unit from Perini Navi’s E-volution line, with the ‘E’ standing for electric. It features an innovative hybrid propulsion system that combines a main diesel engine and an electric motor as part of the shipyard’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

This diesel-electric drivetrain will allow for silent cruising and a range of 3,200 nautical miles at ten knots, thanks to a total fuel capacity of 20,000 litres.

Accommodation is for up to ten guests with a master suite aft, two guest cabins and a fourth cabin forward of the engine room. The layout also includes a  bonus room  that can be used as either a cinema or fifth cabin.

The design features a folding transom door, which provides a sea-level alcove with staircase access on both sides. There is a flexible foredeck located forward with a Japanese-style dining pit. A dedicated sail drum storage unit sits below deck while carbon fibre helm pods sit aft.

Perini Navi chief executive Lamberto Tacoli previously said the sale confirmed that “the quality, style and performance of our ships captivate and satisfy even the most knowledgeable and demanding customers.”

He added, “The 42 metre E-volution forms part of a new range of products that we’ve been working on over the last year and is reporting notable market success.”

Meanwhile Tacoli also confirmed that the second hull in the line has been sold and is already under construction in Turkey.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Tech magnate Mike Lynch's body found in sunken superyacht wreckage, officials say

Early reports indicate the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly., by the associated press • published august 22, 2024 • updated on august 22, 2024 at 10:52 am.

The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, said superyachts like these are “the safest in the most absolute sense.”

“First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing into the wind,” CEO Giovanni Costantino told Sky News on Wednesday. "Second, with the structure, the drift keel, they become unsinkable bodies.”

Morgan Stanley International chair among 6 missing after luxury yacht sinks in Sicily

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy; and Recaldo Thomas, the superyacht’s chef.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.
