70 foot yacht guide: finding your perfect yacht.

The 70 foot yacht range often represents a demarcation in yachting. Vessels below this size range are often owner-operated whereas once yacht owners get into the 70 foot range, owners typically do not operate the yacht themselves. The 70 foot yacht is also just shy of what most consider to be the superyacht category. For instance,  Boat International  tracks superyacht sales and production data of yachts worldwide that are at least 24 meters in length (78-79 feet).

As the yacht size increases, the complexity of the purchase can also increase. While we often still begin with general use case questions such as what the yacht will be used for, how many guests should it accommodate and where do you plan to travel with the yacht, there are other important elements to consider when purchasing a 70 foot yacht. Considerations such as build quality, yacht type, cruising speed, propulsion options and more are all important elements to thoroughly examine.

Understanding the various yacht types is key to matching the right 70 foot yacht to your needs. Express yachts (can be referred to as express cruisers or sport cruisers) typically refer to yachts with a single deck above the hull and a living space below deck. These yachts often catch the eyes of onlookers as they are sleek and sporty.

Express yachts can be further grouped by looking at the hard top or enclosure. Typically the hard top express yacht either offers a semi-enclosure or full-enclosure for the operator. An open express yacht is different, however, in that it has maximum space for sun with little to no shade on deck. The open express can sometimes be referred to as a “Mediterranean” style yacht.

The flybridge or sedan bridge yacht refers to a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck. This additional level can include seating and control station. Often times since the flybridge above is present, the main deck will have an enclosed space. The flybridge itself can be open air or enclosed.

Interior Layout

When yachts get into the 70 foot range, the interior layout can include a wide variety of options to suit your particular yachting lifestyle. Yachts in this range often have a spacious main deck salon with excellent seating, dining and entertaining spaces. Down below, the yachts will often have four or more cabins plus crew quarters. Newer yachts feature impressive full beam master bedrooms that come with remarkable spaciousness and the latest amenities. Quite often, a flybridge includes additional seating and control station.

Finishes and interior designs can vary widely depending on the model and age of the yacht. Commissioning a new yacht build of course means that owners can provide input and select particular finishes and features to meet their needs and tastes.

Considerations When Buying A 70 Foot Yacht

If you’re relatively new to yachting, it can be good to get some experience. Taking time to  charter a yacht  in various destinations can help you narrow down what yacht you wish to buy. Getting familiar through actual use of different yacht types can be very helpful. What features and amenities are important to you? What kind of crew do you anticipate needing? Are you looking for a smaller, more easy-to-operate yacht or are you looking for the most luxurious yachting experience while cruising longer distances? Experience is truly the best way to get closer to accurate answers to these questions.

Understanding your estimated budget for a yacht purchase is a crucial element in narrowing down your options. While understanding that there is always a bigger and more expensive yacht, identify a price range that you are comfortable with while also factoring in crew, maintenance and operating expenses.

Once you identify the yacht type and price range, with the assistance of a yacht broker, you can begin identifying potential options. If considering used yachts, buyers will always encounter the trade-off between age and size. A newer and smaller boat can often cost the same or more than a larger vessel with more years. Of course, newer boats may have less maintenance and upkeep costs while also providing updated technology and features. It’s at this point where an experienced yacht broker can really provide tremendous value. Understanding your needs and budget, a yacht broker can provide excellent advice on selecting yachts to target for purchase that will lead to years of enjoyment and minimal stress.

Custom designing a new yacht can be a thrilling process for owners. Essentially, the owner can provide input at the earliest design phases of the process. The entire design and build process can take years, and the owner experiences taking the yacht from design concept to launch. A semi-custom approach is also available through a number of yacht manufacturers where the owner is essentially purchasing a production model and providing customizations during the build process. Again, talking through your needs and goals with a yacht broker can lead to the most optimal outcome.

Hiring the necessary and appropriate crew for your yacht is an important consideration where many yacht owners can make mistakes. Aquila 70 Reviewed

Between 50 and 70 feet length overall, everything changes. That’s especially true of multihull designs, where volume increases dramatically because of the vessel’s wider beam. Engines, onboard systems, space for the tender and more get upsized, creating a higher caliber of yacht.

The Aquila 70 is an example of this principle and shows how the builder transitioned from the production mindset to a semicustom mentality.

“The aesthetics and speed are what really drove the 70′s design,” says Lex Raas, president of Aquila product development. “The majority of powercats don’t perform; they have very wide beams, and with the wrong length-to-width ratio, you’re challenged on speed. We made our yacht perform.”

The 70′s design allows for a top-end speed north of 27 knots, also thanks to Aquila saving weight by using a higher ratio of carbon fiber on the 70′s construction than on its other boats. The builder worked on the running-surface design using computational fluid dynamics. “We did extensive CFD and tank-testing on the hull and running gear, even down to the rudder shape, to get those numbers,” Raas says. Stability was also a primary goal.

J&J Design, which has penned all of Aquila’s models, was tasked with creating a profile that didn’t look boxy. J&J used tinted glass, curves and a raked superstructure to achieve that goal. In profile, the yacht could pass as a 70-foot monohull.

The ride, as I discovered on a jaunt into the Gulf of Mexico from Clearwater, Florida, is pleasant but different than it would be aboard a similar-size monohull. There’s no rolling thanks to the twin-hull form; high up, it almost felt like the 70 was gliding over the water, rather than punching through it. The yacht reached a 27.3-knot top hop at 2,470 rpm, and the cruise speed at 2,000 rpm was 21.3 knots, with fuel consumption of 62 gallons per hour. The 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels, paired with ZF 500-1 A gears, felt like the right power choice.

The forward section of the flybridge is enclosed, and the helm console is laid out well. There are three Stidd pilot seats, and there are lounges abaft for guests to enjoy the view underway. The open aft deck has a Kenyon grill, an Isotherm fridge and freezer, and a stainless-steel sink, making this place ideal for a barbecue on the hook.

The Portuguese bridge, which has joystick controls outboard to port and starboard, makes it easy to access the bow through centerline steps. There are also passageways along the side decks to move fore and aft on the main deck. Aft, stairs on both sides of the cockpit offer access to the water, while a custom tender is stowed in the transom, flush with the yacht.

Inside, Raas says, “the interior needed yachtlike DNA, so we incorporated the highest-end appliances, a proper dining table and Italian furniture.” Just forward of the cockpit is the 70′s main social area, measuring 300 square feet with 9-foot headroom, it has a galley with top-drawer appliances (see “Spacious Salon”) to starboard and a salon with a separate dining area to port. Fit-and-finish is excellent. Calming, light-colored Alpi wood covers the walls and ceiling, while details such as leather-wrapped, stainless-steel rails and a touchless faucet add a sense of subtle luxury.

The four-stateroom, five-head layout of Hull No. 1 (buyers can choose different layouts) includes a full-beam master stateroom, VIP staterooms aft that stretch along both sides, and a captain’s cabin that connects to the engine room. Thanks to windows everywhere, natural light permeates the spaces.

Looking at the yacht from the dock, the Aquila 70 is most certainly a catamaran. But step inside, and the yacht’s look and layout feel like a sizable monohull wrapped in luxury, speed and the comforts of home.

The King Treatment

The full-beam master stateroom forward has a table and lounge as well as a king-size berth occupying the central area, which is lit by windows along the sides. To starboard is an en suite with a private head, two sinks and a glass-enclosed shower. To port is stowage with pullout drawers, overhead cabinets, and a walk-in closet big enough for liveaboards.

Who Needs a Garage?

One of the highlights of the Aquila 70 is the custom-made Aquila tender, a 13-foot cat designed to be hoisted and secured between the yacht’s twin hulls. Designed by Morrelli & Melvin, the tender offers better stability than a similar-size monohull, with more carrying capacity. Aquila says the tender makes it easier to ferry people and gear to and from the dock, and that securing the tender flush against the deck is more efficient than hanging a tender off the stern. When the tender’s in the water, the platform can be used as a beach club.

Spacious Salon

The 300 sq. ft. salon/galley is populated with top brands for preparing meals (including a Gaggenau cooktop, oven, microwave, espresso machine and wine chiller) and for relaxing (the Natuzzi Italia decor includes a coffee table, bar chairs, a lounge and dining furniture). Other features such as electric blinds, Denon HEOS surround sound and controllable LED lighting deliver a high-end feel.

Otam’s Menacing New 70-Foot Yacht Wants to Be the Manta Ray of Cruisers

Building a 50-knot, ocean-going performance boat with modern comforts and luxury appointments is not a problem for Otam , which has been doing just that for 60 years. Coming up with an iconic design for such a boat is more challenging.

“We wanted something you recognize at first sight, with no doubt,” Otam ’s sales and communication manager Matteo Belardinelli told Robb Report . “We wanted to bring the details to a higher design level and create something that gives the feeling of acceleration and speed, even when moored to the dock.”

It took three years, but Otam finally settled on a profile drawn by BG Design Firm, with engineering and hull lines developed by Umberto Tagliavini Marine Design and Otam’s CEO/mechanical engineer Gianfranco Zanoni.

The highlights of the Otam 70HT include a raked, tinted superstructure capped with a radar arch that recalls a manta ray; scooped air intakes in the hull, on the foredeck, forward of the windscreen and under the radar arch; and stylized aft exhaust vents that can be fitted with accent lights.

The actual performance, including a 40-knot cruising speed, comes via twin 2,000-hp MAN or MTU engines (Otam is investigating more powerful engine options), which hook up to Arneson drives with custom Otam-Rolla propellers. The hull runs 58’6” at the waterline, which combined with 21-degrees of deadrise aft, should make the 70HT seaworthy and efficient.

“Otam buyers look for the real meaning of extreme customization, not just buying a serial product but building their own one, never similar to another and perfectly reflecting their personal style and main needs,” Belardinelli says. To accommodate such variety, Otam offers interchangeable options. The yacht has a base price of $4.36 million, or €4 million. The exterior includes forward and aft sun pads, an aft tender garage and multiple helm and cockpit layout configurations.

Belowdecks there is even more variability. Hull number one, which is under construction and should have its world introduction in Fall 2021, has separate crew quarters (with its own galley) as part of a three-stateroom mix, but the options are many. “One-of-a-kind customizable construction is our calling card, and no two Otam yachts are the same,” Belardinelli says.

More important to the Genoa-based builder, no other brand is the same. Says Belardinelli: “We certainly wanted to avoid the major risk of what is happening in the market today—too many similarities exist between different designs in the same product segments.”

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

Automated interceptors optimize the trim at every speed to maintain ideal hydrodynamics for performance and efficiency, at the same time negating any lateral imbalance due to sidewinds or weight distribution. With the pilot’s peace of mind assured, the driving experience is simpler and more enjoyable.

The custom-installed Garmin electronics have been integrated to control and monitor every onboard system: from engines and alarms, to bilge and water discharge pumps, tank levels and engine room ventilation, right through to the sound system and the air conditioning units. The system can be accessed onboard from both the interior and exterior helm stations and, with the mobile app, remotely from a tablet or smartphone.

The Joystick acts as an analog for the yacht, offering intuitive, one-handed control in every situation. When the yacht is stopped, moving the Joystick forward or back, side to side, and twisting clockwise or counter-clockwise activates the engines to mimic that motion. It’s the easiest way to pull off precise maneuvers. When Joystick Driving is activated, the autopilot is immediately engaged. For a simple course correction, the pilot just needs to twist and release the joystick to change it by a fixed increment, or twist and hold to change it by by multiple increments.. The Autopilot keeps a forward course after the Joystick is released.

Air conditioning

Keep the interior at the perfect temperature with air conditioning that cools and heats. Controls in each cabin provide guests with the ability to adjust temperature based on personal requirements. The system runs efficiently from the generator or a 230v dockside supply.

Interior layout configuration

The Oyster 675 offers two layouts to suit requirements, but the volume provides the opportunity for further customisation. With all three cabin configurations, there is a useful bunk room with two bunks situated amidships on the starboard side.

Wood options

In addition to the standard oak interior, hand-crafted maple, cherry or walnut woods can be selected to add a timeless feel to a contemporary Oyster interior.

Bathing platform

The generous, hydraulic-operated bathing platform, laid with teak decking and a drop-in stainless-steel ladder, offers easy access to the water. The bumper bar posts allow safe docking for the tender.

Extended transom

Enjoy the additional storage space in the full-width lazarette – a hidden benefit of the extra space created on the aft deck with our extended transom option.

Exclusive: On board the Princess S80 ahead of its world debut at Cannes Yachting Festival

A sports yacht with a cruising soul, the S80 ’s DNA is born out of a hull that might end up being the best 25-metre platform to grace the seas, says Carl Richardson. He steps on board the new S Class flagship before its world debut at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival.

First, an admission. Despite plenty of effort on all sides, this isn’t a full test. Time, tides and the demands of the boat show calendar meant we could not get out to sea. Instead, we were given a backstage-style tour with the design and technical teams.

The Princess S80 is the latest sportsbridge chapter in a story that can be traced back over a decade to the Princess V85-S, an impossibly powerful and daring yacht at the time. Since then, the British yacht builder has been a leader in sportsbridge design, leading us to this 70-tonne model, hitting around 32 knots with twin 2,000hp MANs. These figures are important because the boat the S80 replaces is the 50-tonne S78 that can hit 38 knots with 1,900hp MANs.

Performance and speed are key for any genuine sportsbridge model, and so we start with a new boat that is heavier and slower than its predecessor, but it is also bigger in every key area. The S80 uses the same hull as the flybridge Y80 and the Tardis-like X80. The modified V planing design from naval architect Olesinski runs on shafts (as nature intended) and can push each yacht to around 30 knots while delivering the same, class-leading four-ensuite-cabin lower deck.

Speaking to Princess design director Andy Lawrence, a lot of thought went into not only making a different kind of S flagship but also into the hull itself. “It was always going to be a three-boat 25-metre platform running on shafts, we aren’t looking at pods for larger boats. The challenge was creating a hull that would perform as well on the S as it does on the X, two very different boats.”

The X80 does work – according to BOATPro it is one of the best-selling yachts in its class. But it is a much bigger boat than the S80 above the deckline, meaning it is not just about managing extra weight but where that weight is.

Andy Lawrence explains: “The X80 has a much higher CG (Centre of Gravity), but working with our partners Olesinski, over many iterations, we found the right balance.” These iterations included increasing the beam for greater volume, while extending the waterline to hit the speeds expected of an S Class yacht.

Ultimately, Princess delivered three different 25-metre models that all run fast, with the expected option of a MAN 2,200hp engine option delivering the possibility of 36 knots for the S80.

Princess ideology has long been about balance, that sweet spot between space, style and performance. Immediate impressions are good. The S80 looks low, sleek and powerful in the water, its extra length allowing its lines to stretch out, the upper sportsbridge barely visible within the rake of the roofline. Where some sportsbridge models might have more than a little flybridge height and bulk to help increase interior space, the S80 is pure performance yacht.

Given that so much conversation about any modern yacht is about volume and accommodation, it was refreshing to hear Andy talk about the importance of style. “The key was the sportsbridge. On a yacht like this, profile is everything, we wanted a big sportsbridge deck, but one you couldn’t actually see!”

Before I get too idealistic on sports style, there will be a hard top option for the S80 which makes perfect sense for a good number of boating reasons, but will change the yacht’s low-down, growling profile (I'm hoping a few emotionally led buyers stick with the standard awning so the rest of us can enjoy the original lines).

Moving up the easy aft deck steps, the sportsbridge is a vast social expanse of yacht style with the driving position rightly set at its heart. It’s a noticeably and provably bigger and better deck than the S78. The extra foot (0.3 metres) of beam works wonders. There is so much deck space but also vast and separate areas of seating plus a massive barbecue and bar, a central island of cold storage and room for a pop-up TV.

It’s the same story back on the aft deck. A familiar Princess layout sees two massive asymmetric pads flank your journey up from the hydraulic platform and garage. But things are different here and it’s another key part of the S80 design. With more room to use, the deck now has three separate social areas, dining, sunbathing and lounging, without the need to convert or move anything. Better still, it’s all done with space to spare and masses of stowage space worked in.

Again, there are no happy accidents here. The initial design saw the staircase and dining table in different positions, but the full-scale mock-ups Princess employs for every new model changed that. We now have a walkaround dining table to port with superb views out over the deck and sea beyond.

Glass-panelled flanks extend aft from the superstructure to ensure that, with the view, privacy and protection are also ensured. The sportsbridge overhang keeps everything feeling intimate and beautifully lit at night - there’s even air-conditioning overhead and the option to enclose the dining area with awnings.

The rest of the decks are just as good. The side decks sit within waist-high bulwarks with gates each side and deep storage lockers forward. Even with the superstructure pushing forward, Princess has found a good deal of space for the foredeck lounge, where eight guests can gather in circular conviviality.

Power of 3 + 5

The S80 is the first Princess to have three lower helm seats. That may not immediately look like a headline moment for a 25-metre performance boat, but it points to something else. Everywhere you go on this boat, from the sportsbridge to the main dining table, its eight guests are able to gather and be together. Whether it’s enjoying the ride or lunch, on the S80, no one gets left behind.

The galley aft design plays a rightfully central role on the main deck. It’s part of the social scene, not hidden away below. A massive piece of glass hinges up to open inside to out, with a bordering storage unit sneaking in a pop-up TV. 

The S80 is probably going to be crewed (by no more than two people given the tight quarters in the stern) but it is a social boat and guests will love the galley, dipping into the Sub-Zero refrigerator, massive drawer-style freezers or just hanging around the bar area. Storage space is off the scale, the galley’s multiple dedicated lockers include a pop-up pantry while across the way there is a deep, long sideboard.

Dining is clearly intended to be al fresco on the S80, but you can option a table for the saloon – it can handle the extra furniture. The saloon is massive, another heady example of Princess' ability to deliver interior space, harmony and splendour with an ease few other yards can match. Height and glass play an important part. Huge, 6ft (1.8-metre) high sections of glass line the saloon and, with the optional glass-panelled sunroof and helm side door open, it’s like you never left the deck.

If light and splendour invite you in, the deep, low sofas ensure you won’t leave in a hurry. The best seating area (isn't it always) is the smallest. The raised lounge forward, up by the helm, is a great spot at any time of day, but it’s the perfect guest spot when underway - kudos to whoever had the foresight to subtly lower the forward finishing panel to ensure the best possible view forward.

Anyone who has been aboard the X80 or Y80 will be familiar with the four cabin-layout below decks. The S version has its own smart, performance-edged colour palette and materials, but it will be the peerless layout that wins you over. Four class-leading ensuite cabins will look after eight guests with ease, including the owner’s stateroom which is a perfect blend of style, space and luxury wrapped in deep glass hull windows. A useful upgrade on the S78, there are now separate entrances for the walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.

The forward VIP is equally impressive with an outstanding ensuite and more storage space than seems necessary – and I never, ever think that. There’s a sense of fraternity going on here too, with each cabin featuring the same style notes as the stateroom, including plenty of solid wood to go with the coolly understated but always inviting modern interior finish.

Beyond the looks and luxury, this is a boat designed for the owner to drive, when the fancy takes them, and for their guests to join in on the experience of 70 tonnes carving through the water at 32 knots. Both the upper and lower help stations look and feel like a performance yacht should, with deep, supportive seats and an array of screens and dials. But just as important are the flanks of guest-seating each side of the sportsbridge helm or the elevated lounge to port of the lower helm.

Initial sea trials, with a light load but 12 people on board, recorded 36 knots powered by the standard twin MAN 2,000hp engines, so the official top speed of 32 knots looks nailed on. The MAN 2,200hp option will suit owners who like to cruise faster while adding two or three knots to the top speed. Talking to the Princess team, you get the feeling the extra power is also about the new S flagship being able to match the outgoing one – a competitive spirit I very much endorse.

To say Princess has a reputation for good design, is a bit like saying Patel-Philipe makes accurate timepieces. The S80, like all its stablemates, simply doesn’t put a foot wrong inside or out. The proportions are near-perfect, the styling confident without being challenging and the finish always brings that little bit extra – as with the use of solid woods and semi-custom levels of choice and detail.

The nearest yacht in terms of onboard luxury, design and space is the Azimut S10 . The S10 is a very fine vessel with an unmatched sense of performance yacht cool, but it is 9ft (3 metres) longer and notably more money. The fact it is the S80’s most obvious competitor says everything you need to know about how good a boat this is.

The only possible downside for an S80 owner might be the unnerving sight of a Princess X80 keeping up with you. For anyone concerned about such an event, the MAN 2,200hp engine is the upgrade for you.

A rally in US technology stocks helped push Wall Street’s major indices into positive territory, recovering from a morning sell-off and putting them on track for a three-day win streak.

The S&P 500 was a 0.5 per cent higher in Wednesday afternoon trading, advancing despite three quarters of its constituents trading lower. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.4 per cent as all Magnificent Seven groups except Tesla advanced. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 3.6 per cent.

Treasuries sold off, with most of the softness in US government debt coming after the release of consumer price index data . “Core” inflation was slightly higher than forecast, potentially reducing investors’ hopes for a “jumbo” interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next week.

The yield on the two-year Treasury was up 0.04 percentage points to 3.65 per cent, while the yield on the 10-year note rose 0.02 percentage points to 3.66 per cent.

Oil prices rise as Hurricane Francine disrupts US production

Oil prices jumped on Wednesday as Hurricane Francine tears through the Gulf of Mexico and disrupted oil and gas production along the US Gulf Coast. 

Prices for Brent crude settled 1.34 per cent higher to $70.61 per barrel, partially reversing losses on Tuesday when prices settled at a three-year low. West Texas Intermediate, the US marker, rose 2.1 per cent to $67.18 per barrel. 

Hurricane Francine, a Category 1 storm, has made landfall in Louisiana. The US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said about 39 per cent of oil production and 49 per cent of natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico has been “shut-in”, which means safety valves have been closed to prevent the release of oil or gas.

The president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta created an “appearance” of acting on confidential information from the US central bank after 154 trades were executed on his behalf since 2018 during communications blackout periods ahead of policy meetings.

In a report published on Wednesday, the Fed’s independent inspector general concluded Raphael Bostic had repeatedly violated the central bank’s trading rules since taking over as president of the Atlanta Fed in 2017.

While the report concluded Bostic did not trade on confidential Federal Open Market Committee information, nor did he have any conflicts of interests, the scope of his transactions and their timing raised alarm bells.

“Based on the totality of these findings, Dr Bostic also created an ‘appearance of acting on confidential FOMC information’ under the FOMC blackout rule and an ‘appearance of a conflict of interest’ that could cause a reasonable person to question Dr Bostic’s impartiality under FRB Atlanta’s code of conduct,” the report said.

Solar stocks rise after Harris’s strong debate performance

US-listed solar stocks jumped after Kamala Harris’s strong debate performance gave investors confidence in the clean energy sector that the Biden Administration has supported with the Inflation Reduction Act.

In afternoon trading on Wednesday, shares in solar technology companies First Solar, SolarEdge, and Sunrun were up 11.6 per cent, 5.7 per cent and 7.7 per cent, respectively.

The vice-president was viewed by many pollsters as the winner of Tuesday night’s presidential debate. The prospect of a Harris presidency probably represents a boost to confidence among solar investors owing to expectations she would maintain the Biden administration’s clean energy investments.

Last night, Donald Trump proclaimed he was a “big fan of solar” but complained it takes up 400-500 acres of “desert soil” and that it needs a “whole desert to get some energy to come out”.

Goldman CEO expects ‘two, maybe three’ Fed interest rate cuts through autumn

Goldman Sachs chief executive David Solomon reaffirmed his bank’s expectation for a quarter-point interest rate cut at the Federal Reserve’s upcoming meeting, but hinted he was monitoring weakness in the labour market.

“I certainly see two, maybe three cuts as we move through the fall,” Solomon told CNBC on Wednesday.

He said Goldman expects the Fed to lower the federal funds rate by 0.25 percentage points, but “I think there’s a case to be made for 50 [basis points] based on a little bit more softening in the labour market”.

Solomon’s view that there could only be two rate cuts from the remaining Fed meetings this year is more hawkish than swaps market data from Bloomberg. Traders predict an implied federal funds rate of 4.28 per cent after the Fed’s December meeting, more than a full percentage point lower than the 5.33 per cent floating rate on Wednesday afternoon.

US stocks slide after inflation report tempers hope for jumbo rate cut

US stocks declined in late-morning trading following US inflation data that investors said had slashed the chances of a larger half-point interest rate cut later this month.

The S&P 500 fell 1.6 per cent on Wednesday, with banks, industrials and basic materials among the worst performers on the day and all of the index’s subsectors in negative territory. The Nasdaq Composite lost 1.3 per cent and the small-cap Russell 2000 shed 1.7 per cent.

The sell-off spread across the Atlantic, where Europe’s region-wide Stoxx 600 fell 0.4 per cent, erasing earlier gains.

August’s mixed US inflation figures mean “a full 0.5 percentage point cut just became a little less convincing”, said Julian Howard, chief multi-asset investment strategist at GAM Investments.

UK Foreign Office summons Iran’s top diplomat over missiles for Russia

The Iranian chargé d’affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office in London on Wednesday over Tehran’s transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia.

Britain views the shipment of missiles as a “dangerous escalation” by Iran that will trigger a “significant response”, a Foreign Office spokesperson said.

Ali Matinfar, Iran’s most senior diplomat based in the UK, was summoned after the UK, US, Germany and France on Tuesday formally accused Tehran of sending short-range missiles to Moscow and unveiled new sanctions against Iranian individuals and entities.

Trump Media shares fall sharply at the open

Shares in Donald Trump’s Truth Social media company fell more than 17 per cent in the opening minutes of trading on Wednesday.

Trump Media & Technology, whose main business is the lossmaking Truth Social platform where the former president directs most of his personal social media efforts, traded as low as $15.30, a price not seen since before Trump Media went public in March.

Investors appeared rattled by Trump’s perceived performance during Tuesday’s presidential debate, and by the expiry next week of locked-up stock, which could prompt further selling. During the debate, the shares slipped 7 per cent. 

Since a recent peak in July after Trump survived an assassination attempt, the shares have fallen about 60 per cent.

US stocks mixed after inflation report

US stocks were mixed early on Wednesday following an inflation report that led traders to cut their bets on a jumbo half-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next week.

Wall Street’s blue-chip S&P 500 lost 0.4 per cent shortly after the New York open, dragged lower by rate-sensitive real estate stocks and financials. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 0.1 per cent. 

Data released earlier on Wednesday showed US inflation fell 2.5 per cent in August. However, core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, increased to 0.3 per cent month-on-month. Core services inflation rose to 0.4 per cent month-on-month.

UK government to open long-promised inquiry into Finucane murder

The UK government will open a long-promised public inquiry into the murder by Loyalist paramilitaries of a prominent Belfast lawyer in 1989, which former Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament over a decade ago involved “shocking levels of state collusion”.

Traders raise bets on Fed cut next week

Investors have raised their bets on a quarter-point interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next week, following the release of US inflation data on Wednesday.

Traders on futures markets were pricing an 85 per cent chance of a 0.25 percentage point cut at the Fed’s next meeting on September 18, up from about 75 per cent before the data release. US interest rates are currently in a range of 5.25 to 5.5 per cent, a 23-year high.

After the release, the yield on two-year Treasury bonds, which tracks interest rate expectations and moves inversely to prices, rose 0.08 percentage points to 3.69 per cent.

US inflation fell to 2.5 per cent in August, setting the stage for the Federal Reserve to start cutting interest rates at its meeting next week.

The latest annual consumer price index compared with July’s 2.9 per cent pace, and was marginally below the estimate of 2.6 per cent from economists polled by Reuters.

Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices held steady at 3.2 per cent, according to data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday.

Wages and new signings push up losses at Manchester United

Manchester United’s full-year losses swelled after a tough season on the pitch and exceptional costs from the review that resulted in Sir Jim Ratcliffe buying a minority stake in the English football club.

Revenues increased 2.1 per cent to a club record £661mn in the year ended June 30, but full-year net losses widened from £28.7mn to £113mn due to spending on wages and new players.

Ratcliffe became a co-owner alongside the Glazer family earlier this year. Since then a strategic overhaul has cut 250 jobs to save money. United expects to save £40mn to £45mn a year from the previously reported cuts. The redundancy plan cost £10mn to execute.

Scotland makes pitch for institutional investment in energy transition

Scotland is to draw up a national project pipeline to lure institutional capital including sovereign wealth funds to invest in green industries such as offshore wind and hydrogen and create jobs through the development of related supply chains and manufacturing.

What to watch in North America

US inflation: The Federal Reserve’s rate-setters will take today’s consumer price index data into account when they decide next week whether to lower rates from their 23-year-high. Economists forecast a 0.2 per cent month-on-month rise in the CPI in August, and a 2.6 per cent increase on an annual basis. The “core” reading, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, is expected to have increased by 0.2 per cent last month and 3.2 per cent over the past year.

Debate fallout: Followers of Tuesday night’s showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will be keen to find out whether the event has yielded new developments from the two campaigns.

Market reaction points to Harris victory in presidential debate

A weaker dollar and stronger Asian currencies early on Wednesday suggest investors believe Kamala Harris beat Donald Trump in Tuesday’s presidential debate, according to analysts.

The Japanese yen, Philippine peso and South Korean won were among the best performers in morning trade in London, “a clear indication of Trump trades being scaled back”, said Francesco Pesole of ING.

“Bitcoin trading on the back foot” signals much the same thing, given Trump’s perceived liking for cryptocurrencies, he added.

Although Trump has previously railed against what he says is an overly strong dollar, analysts say his mooted trade policies would be likely to strengthen it further.

Shares in Trump Media & Technology Group fell 15 per cent in pre-market trading.

US Treasuries rally ahead of inflation data

Treasuries rallied on Wednesday, pushing yields to multiyear lows ahead of the release of August’s consumer price index reading.

The two-year Treasury yield, which moves with interest rate expectations, fell 0.04 percentage points to 3.56 per cent by mid-morning in London, its lowest level since September 2022.

The benchmark 10-year yield fell 0.03 percentage points to 3.61 per cent, its lowest level since June 2023. Yields move inversely to prices.

In currency markets, the dollar slipped 0.2 per cent against a basket of six other currencies, taking its decline since the start of July to 4.2 per cent.

UK bonds edge up on GDP data

UK government bonds edged up on Wednesday morning after GDP data suggested the Bank of England had more room than expected to cut interest rates at its meeting next week.

The yield on interest rate-sensitive two-year gilts fell from 3.86 per cent at Tuesday’s close to 3.82 per cent soon after the data was published. Yields move inversely to prices.

The UK economy registered zero growth for the second month running in July. Economists had expected growth of 0.2 per cent.

On futures markets, traders were pricing a 24 per cent chance that the BoE would cut interest rates next week, up slightly from 23 per cent before markets opened.

European stocks rose and Wall Street futures slipped on Wednesday ahead of US inflation data that will influence how aggressively the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates next week.

Heathrow airport reports record passenger numbers

A record number of passengers passed through London’s Heathrow airport during the peak summer months, leaving the airport operating close to its capacity as it considers a new tilt at expansion.

The airport on Wednesday reported booming demand for travel to the US and European holiday destinations including Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey. It said 7.97mn people flew from its terminals in August, a fourth consecutive month of record numbers.

Italy’s UniCredit buys 9% of Commerzbank, opening door to consolidation of German banking

Italian lender UniCredit has bought a 9 per cent stake in its German rival Commerzbank and is taking regulatory steps to increase its stake further, in a move that may open the door to a long-awaited banking sector consolidation in Europe’s largest economy.

UniCredit acquired half of the stake from the German government and bought another 4.5 per cent on the open market.

UniCredit already owns Munich-based German lender HypoVereinsbank and has long been seen as a prime candidate for an acquisition of Commerzbank, as a combination of both operations has the potential to generate a German finance powerhouse.

Rentokil Initial has warned that profits this year will be lower than analysts expected after its North American business was hit by slower revenue growth and higher costs.

The company said on Wednesday that adjusted profits before tax and amortisation this year would be around £700mn, lower than the £776mn that analysts expected and the £766mn it made last year.

The US accounts for more than half of group sales following its $6.7bn acquisition of Terminix in 2021.

The pound held steady on Wednesday after official figures showed the UK economy registered zero growth for the second consecutive month in July.

Sterling was up 0.15 per cent against the dollar at $1.3098 immediately after figures came out, slightly weaker than its 0.2 per cent gain on the day before they were published.

Economists had expected the economy to grow 0.2 per cent in July after stagnating in June. Annual GDP growth was 1.2 per cent in the year to July, less than the expected 1.4 per cent.

Before futures markets opened, traders were pricing a 23 per cent chance that the Bank of England would cut rates at its meeting next week, with two quarter-point cuts priced by the end of the year.

Inditex sales grow 7%

Inditex’s sales expanded by just over 7 per cent in the past quarter as the Zara owner’s growth settled in at a lower rate than in the immediate post-pandemic period.

The Spanish group said sales climbed 7.3 per cent to €9.9bn in the three months to the end of July, in line with market expectations, as it posted a 9.6 per cent rise in net profit to €1.5bn.

Zara consistently posted double-digit sales growth in 2022 and 2023. But it indicated that business had picked up again in recent weeks, saying sales between August 1 and September 8 were up 11 per cent.

UK economy stagnated in July

The UK economy unexpectedly stagnated for the second consecutive month in July, in a blow to the Labour government.

The monthly GDP figure from the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday was below economists’ expectations for 0.2 per cent growth and comes after the economy also registered zero growth in June.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has put growth at the centre of Labour’s agenda, promising to “take the brakes off Britain” ahead of her first Budget on October 30.

Markets update: Chinese biotech stocks recover after US bill prompts sell-off

Hong Kong-listed Chinese biotechnology shares recovered some ground on Wednesday, a day after a sell-off prompted by a US House bill restricting their operations and funding in America.

BeiGene gained 5.5 per cent, while Akeso rose 4.6 per cent. WuXi Biologics was up 3.1 per cent and Sino Biopharm added 1 per cent.

Markets update: Lithium shares soar after report of mining halt by China’s CATL

Shares in Australian lithium producers soared in early Wednesday trading after an analyst reported that China’s largest electric-vehicle battery maker had suspended operations at two mines.

UBS’s Sky Han said CATL had halted the mining of lepidolite, a lithium-rich mineral, at two locations in Jiangxi province in China’s south-east.

Han said the lithium spot price had been below CATL’s production cost since mid-July.

Sydney-listed Mineral Resources, Pilbara Minerals and Liontown Resources led gains with rises of 17.2 per cent, 11.4 per cent and 12.6 per cent respectively.

The overall S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.3 per cent.

Elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, Japan’s Topix benchmark was down 1.2 per cent, while South Korea’s Kospi shed 0.6 per cent.

GameStop to issue shares despite falling revenue and store closure plan

GameStop said it would issue more shares as the US video game retailer reported falling second-quarter revenue as consumers shunned bricks-and-mortar stores in favour of online purchases.

The company said on Tuesday that proceeds from the 20mn shares would be used “for general corporate purposes, which may include acquisitions and investments”.

At the closing price of $23.45, the new sale would bring in $479mn of cash, before fees, adding to its $4.2bn war chest.

GameStop, at the centre of the 2021 meme stock frenzy , said it would rein in costs and close “underperforming stores”.

The company reported quarterly revenue of $798.3mn, down from $1.16bn a year earlier. Net income was $14.8mn, compared with a net loss of $2.8mn a year earlier.

Shares were 3.3 per cent lower in after-hours trading.

US stocks notched their first back-to-back gain in three weeks, even as shares of big banks fell after JPMorgan Chase cautioned that the analyst consensus on its earnings for next year was too optimistic.

The S&P 500 closed 0.4 per cent higher on Tuesday, while the technology-dominated Nasdaq Composite added 0.8 per cent. It was the first time since mid-August the two indices have had two positive sessions in a row and follows their biggest weekly drops in at least 18 months.

Oil prices fall below $70 for first time since December 2021

Oil prices extended their drop on Tuesday afternoon, pushing the benchmark price below $70 for the first time since December 2021, on speculation that weak economic growth will spark a further softening in demand. The price of Brent, the international benchmark, slipped 3.5 per cent to $69.32 per barrel, while the US equivalent, West Texas Intermediate, fell by 3.3 per cent to $66.45 per barrel. Nippon Steel executive flies to Washington in bid to save US Steel deal

Nippon Steel’s vice-chair will meet senior US officials in Washington on Wednesday in a last-ditch effort to salvage the Japanese group’s proposed $15bn acquisition of US Steel, which is opposed by President Joe Biden and vide-president Kamala Harris.

People familiar with the situation said Takahiro Mori would meet several deputy cabinet secretaries involved with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, the panel that vets inbound investment deals for national security risks.

The Treasury and Nippon Steel both declined to comment.

The deal has become an issue in the US presidential race because US Steel is based in Pennsylvania, a critical swing state that Harris and former president Donald Trump are both hoping to win in November.
