2024 Australian Yachting Championships

australian yachting championships 2024

The Australian Yachting Championships are set to be run alongside some of Australia’s biggest keelboat regattas after Australian Sailing today locked in the host clubs of the event for the next four years.

Australian Sailing is intentionally setting the schedule for this significant event well in advance based on feedback from keelboat owners. The event will be shared by clubs in four states after strong submissions were lodged from across the country in response to an Expression of Interest to host the event.

Port Lincoln Yacht Club in South Australia (2023), Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club in New South Wales (2024), Derwent Sailing Squadron in Tasmania (2025) and Southport Yacht Club in Queensland (2026) were the clubs selected, with the Yachting Championships to be run either in conjunction with or alongside existing keystone events.

These include Port Lincoln’s Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race and Port Lincoln Race Week, Newcastle’s SailFest, the River Derwent as the finish of the ROLEX Sydney Hobart and Southport’s conclusion to the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast race.

“We are delighted to be able to share the Australian Yachting Championships with a diverse selection of clubs that will bring sailors together under a wide range of sailing conditions” commented Australian Sailing CEO Ben Houston.

“We thank all the clubs who provided Expressions of Interest to host the event and look forward to working with the successful clubs over the next four years. It is particularly pleasing to see the event go to three deserving first-time hosts.”

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club hosted a successful Championships in 2014, while the three other clubs are all hosting Australia’s National Championships for IRC racing for the first time.

The event is returning to South Australia for the first time since 2002, when Stephen Ainsworth’s Swan 48 Loki won a closely fought event hosted by the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron and the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia.

Steve Kemp, Chairman of the Organising Committee from Port Lincoln Yacht Club, commented “The Port Lincoln Yacht Club are honoured and excited to be announced as hosts of the 2023 Australian Yachting Championships and cannot wait to put on an amazing yachting regatta in some of the best sailing waters in South Australia.”

Championships in April 2024

The great ocean racing courses and breezes are only 15 minutes sail from the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club's marina, and the club is right in the centre of the Newcastle city. This is the location of the 2024 Australian Yachting Championship.

Newcastle offers direct flights from Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane. Even Sydney has a direct flight, should the short drive or door to door train service not quite be your thing. The city of Newcastle itself offers spectacular beaches, museums, and a thriving coffee, bar and restraunt scene. And you haven't even rigged up for the day's racing yet.

The racing is the 2024 Australian Yachting Championship held under IRC and conducted as part of SailFest. SailFest is an event supported by the City of Newcastle and is hosted by the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club and the Port Hunter 16-Foot Skiff Sailing Club. Timed in mid-April, SailFest is in the Goldilocks zone of neither too hot nor too cold, but has just the right temperature. Australian boat owners should mark the dates in their calendar and take advantage of the time available to organising and preparing their crew and boat.

Paul O'Rourke visited the 2023 edition of the Australian Yachting Championship in Port Lincoln and "promised Geoff Boettcher the world if he could come" to defend his title in Newcastle. Paul went on to comment how the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club has a true deep water facility without bridges or overhead wires. The club could berth all of Australia's mini-maxi and maxi fleet easily, let alone the 52 footers like Secret Men's Business .

SailFest attracts a large fleet of all sizes every year. Boettcher may have a tough task defending his division win from this year at Lincoln Week Regatta, what was effectively his home ground. Many boats Boettcher would face in 2024 compete on these waters every year, a clear advantage to them.

J/70 Australian Championship 2024

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) played host to the 2024 J/70 Australian Championship, delivering four days of gripping competition on the famous Sydney Harbour. Nineteen high-calibre J/70’s, including four from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), battled it out in 11 races to determine the nation’s top J/70 sailors.

Day 1: Celestial Takes Early Lead

Thursday marked the start of the championship with a delayed kick-off due to lighter breeze conditions. Despite the challenges, the four front-runners – Celestial, Ambition, Vamos, and Juno – established their dominance in the first three races. CYCA’s Bryan Northcote’s Jedi and Marco Poli’s Nuvola also made their presence felt on the opening day.

Day 2: Tricky Winds Test Competitors

The second day of the championship presented another challenge with tricky winds from the east. Competitors had to navigate the conditions carefully as they vied for supremacy in the highly competitive fleet.

Day 3: N/E Breeze and Saturday Harbour Traffic

As the championship progressed to Day 3, the winds shifted back to the northeast. However, the sailors not only contended with the changing breeze but also had to navigate through the bustling Saturday Harbour traffic, as multiple fleets raced alongside the J/70 Australian Championship participants.

Day 4: CYCA Members Dominate Standings

The final day of the championship saw CYCA members making their mark at the top of the standings. Celestial, Ambition, Vamos, and Juno, skippered by Rob Davis, Chris and Lachlan Dare, Tim Ryan, and Reg Lord, respectively, showcased their prowess in the one-design class. With CYCA members on many of the leading boats, the club asserted its dominance in the J/70 fleet.

Final Standings: Celestial Secures the Crown

After 11 exhilarating races, it was Rob Davis and his crew on Celestial (AUS 507) from SYC who emerged victorious, securing the title of the 2024 J/70 Australian Champions. Rob and his crew displayed incredible consistency throughout this championship scoring a remarkable 25 points at the end of the series. Tim Ryan’s Vamos (AUS 1567) from CYCA claimed the second spot, closely followed by Chris and Lachlan Dare’s Ambition (AUS 1780) from SYC in third.

The championship showcased the incredible skill and crew work of the J/70 sailing community in Australia, highlighting Sydney Harbour as a premier destination for competitive sailing events.

  • Celestial J70 (AUS 507) Rob Davis, David Chapman, Alex Gough & Jack Acton, SYC
  • Vamos (AUS 1567) Tim Ryan, Robert Greenhalgh, Charlie Gundy & Jess Grimes, CYCA
  • Ambition (AUS 1780) Chris Dare, Lachlan Dare, Ben Lamb & Murray Jones, SYC

  • Oceania & Australian Masters 2024 RQYS

The 2024 O & A Masters was held at RQYS Manly Queensland 12-15 April.

Great Queensland weather and hospitality was enjoyed by all competitors.

Host district QILCA, RO Louise Davis and RQYS did a great job in organising and running the event in which 7 of the 8 scheduled races were completed.

Rob Sykes provided the following comments on the event.

An eclectic fleet of some 71 boats, including past Olympians, current plus past World Champions and cube holders was met by winds ranging from about 15kn on Friday to a glass out on Monday morning. As some people began to de rig on Monday, the wind came through at about 6kn resulting in us non-believers frantically re rigging to get on the water.

Thanks must go to the RO for the postponement during the first start sequence that allowed us get to the start in time. There were also short postponements on the third race of the middle two days to allow the 6’s to clear the lee gate before the 7’s started their last race of those days. These delays and the communication between the RO and sailors were most welcome.

The regatta management was outstanding, helped by the thoughtful start sequence of 7’s first, followed by 4’s and then the 6’s (who tended to be opponents of rule 30 and enjoyed “nudging” the pin boat at the gun).

I have to be a bit careful pointing the bone at the 6’s, as the winds during the regatta often brought marginal planing or surfing conditions when wave and gust met nicely, resulting in those with the biggest sails pushing the boundary of rule 42 in interesting and creative ways.

I suspect the 4’s were the best behaved of all the fleets. It was really nice to see them on the water and would like to welcome them to future events.

Overall, the racing was very tight with all positions swapped during any race. The regatta winners seemed to find a way to be in the front when it mattered most, while the rest of us gained and lost places with alarming regularity when the winning shift turned from hero to zero in the space of a few minutes.

The pressure on every mark was huge, with a small error on one side or other capable of losing or gaining 5 or 6 places. The finish was similar, with multiple boats finishing within fractions of a boat length of each other. Congratulations must go to the finish boat and volunteer crew who managed to record this mayhem.

Sunday evening brought the regatta dinner after the second day of 3 light weather races. The increasing laughter levels as the evening progressed bear testament to the camaraderie enjoyed by all.

The presentation was preceded by the mandatory sausage sizzle where the category winners and runner ups were presented cubes, ILCA equipment and wine donated by our sponsors, Sail27 and PSA. The important people who make up the bulk of the fleet were also acknowledged with randomly drawn skippers receiving a bottle of wine.

There are more individual perspectives on the event from sailors in the five age divisions and the three classes on the QILCA web site Here .

  • Sailors Eye View of the 2024 ILCA 6 Championship

“It’s never like this here.”

I know this is a common saying at every event, but this held true at the 2024 Oceania & Australian ILCA Open & Youth Championships. With the four AST/ASS women away in Argentina to compete at the World Championships, becoming the National ILCA 6 Champion was up for grabs.

Up and coming RQYS sailors Frances Beebe (pictured above) has written a great sailors eye view of the ILCA 6 Championship in Adelaide which you can read Here.

  • Championship Finishes With a Bang

Brooke Wilson giving her all in the close final race – Photo Jack Fletcher Down Under Sail

The championship which started with light and difficult conditions finished up today with a bang. A cracking 18-22 knot southerly with a big steep swell meant it was a physical day on the water.

In the ILCA 6 class Brooke Wilson (NSW) led the regatta for the first few days before Frances Beebe (QLD) really threw down the challenge, leading going into the final race.

Brooke was able to take the final race win, with Frances right on her heals. This gave Brooke the championship win by a single point. Frances was first Under 21. Victorian under 19 sailor Patrick Cumminwas third. Healy Ryan (NSW) was first under 17 in 4th place.

Tom Saunders NZL close second in ILCA 7 – Photo Jack Fletcher

It also went down to the wire in the ILCA 7 with Tom Saunders (NZ) leading by two points from Matt Wearn with the second drop and the final race to go.

In the final race Matt finished with 8th to Tom’s 18th resulting in Matt’s two point win. Germany’s Philipp Buhl scored three bullets but having to count an 11 and 13 saw him six points off in third. Michael Beckett (GBR) and Swifto Elliott (WA) completed the cube podium.

Aiden Simmons all the way winner in the ILCA 4 – Photo Jack Fletcher

Aidan Simmons (VIC) lead throughout the ILCA 4 series with consistent places in all conditions. Aiden scored five wins and no place worse than 3rd.  Jasper Stay (VIC) scored three wins but was a little less consistent finishing four points behind Aiden.

Chase Taylor (QLD) was third. He was one of the very successful Queensland ILCA 4 squad which posted five of the top ten ILCA 4 places.

The event was voted a great success despite some ordinary conditions causing lost races and no sailing on Day 5. Like the sailors the Adelaide Sailing Club volunteers, PRO Col Dods, the race committee and jury did a terrific job in the sometimes testing conditions.

Full results are linked below.

The next Oceania & Australian Championships will be held at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Manly QLD 1-8 January 2025.

Singapore assured of historic Paralympic boccia medal after Jeralyn Tan’s semi-final win

australian yachting championships 2024

SINGAPORE – The tears flowed freely as Jeralyn Tan hugged her coach Yurnita Omar after securing a historic Paralympic boccia medal for Singapore at the South Paris Arena 1 on Sept 1.

In contrast to the outpouring of emotions, the 35-year-old was a picture of composure and determination earlier as the world No. 2 displayed great strategy and accuracy to beat Japan’s sixth-ranked Hiromi Endo 5-1 in their women’s individual BC1 semi-final.

With at least a silver assured, debutante Tan will play home favourite and world No. 16 Aurelie Aubert in the final at 4.30pm (Singapore time) on Sept 2.

The 27-year-old had defeated Bermuda’s Yushae DeSilva-Andrade in a tiebreak after their semi-final ended 2-2. Endo later beat DeSilva-Andrade 7-0 to take the bronze.

An elated Tan said: “I’m touched by the support. We are not many but I can feel the kampung spirit. I will put all my heart and soul to play the final. With support from my fellow Singaporeans, we will brave this together.”

Boccia means “to bowl” in Italian. The aim of the game, played by wheelchair-using athletes with motor-skill impairment, is to bowl balls as close as possible to a white target ball known as the jack.

At the end of each of the four rounds for individual matches, the player whose ball is closest to the jack scores one point. He or she receives an additional point for every ball that sits nearer to the jack than the opponent’s closest ball.

In a clash of styles, Tan, who plays with an underhand toss, opted to throw the jack to the near left corner, while Endo, who has an overhand pitch, preferred to place the jack in the far right corner.

The Singaporean required the referee’s calipers to award her the first point, and she never looked back from then.

A superb fourth throw by Tan in the second round gave Endo, 38, no way back and she decided not to play her fifth and six throws, after confirming she would get an additional point for a 3-0 lead.

She explained: “I had secured two points, so after analysing there was some risk of the ball turning due to the uneven flooring, I gave up my last two balls.”

The Japanese tried to find a way back in the third round, but Tan was again brilliant with her fourth throw and a final nudge gave her an almost unassailable 5-0 lead with just six points to play for in the final end. The win was confirmed after Endo tossed two balls out of play.

Tan, who has cerebral palsy, has been in superb form at these Paralympics.

In the preliminary-round Pool B matches, she had beaten Aubert 6-1 on Aug 29 and then Spain’s eighth-ranked Amagoia Arrieta 5-1 on Aug 31, before overcoming Brazil’s world No. 1 Andreza Oliveira 7-5 in the quarter-finals.

With her medal, she will become only Singapore’s fourth Paralympic medallist after swimmers Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh and equestrienne Laurentia Tan. She also has the chance to become their second Paralympic champion after Yip, who won two golds at these Games, taking her tally to seven.

Yurnita, who has coached Jeralyn since 2016, said: “I’m so proud of her. With the pressure, anxiety and expectations, she was brave throughout.

“We have strong support, she showed good spirit and a strong heart. We are prepared for the final, where she will need a strong mind and stay focused.”

Meanwhile, at his third Paralympics, compatriot Diroy Noordin finished last out of nine athletes in the men’s shot put F40 final with an 8.68m best from his first throw.

The 32-year-old was ninth at Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and eighth at Tokyo 2020.

Portugal’s Miguel Monteiro won the gold with a Paralympic record of 11.21m, while Mongolia’s Battulga Tsegmid (11.09m) and Iraq’s Garrah Tnaiash (11.03m) claimed silver and bronze respectively.
